Team ranks first at Robotics World Championship

The Krypton Cougars, a robotics team composed of high school students from the Hershey and Palmyra region, had a very successful season, qualifying to compete in the 2023 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) World Championship in Houston, Texas.

The competition, which ran from April 19 to 23, involved more than 600 teams from more than 25 countries. Leading up to worlds, the Krypton Cougars had taken first place in their first two competitions of 2023, then at the districts championship competition the team climbed to first-place alliance captain for the

County commissioners laud student musicians

The Dauphin County commissioners recently recognized several Hershey High School and Lower Dauphin High School students who earned selection to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) 2023 All-State Festival.

Two students from Hershey High School were chosen for the All-State Concert Band: Jesse Mullins was selected for alto saxophone, and Matias von Louw was selected for tenor saxophone. The All-State Orchestra included violist Emma Starr and violinists Claire Tian and Alicia Xie, all from Hershey High School, as

well as Lower Dauphin student Joseph Goduto on viola. Lower Dauphin student Aden Weigle was selected to the All-State Chorus, as well as the 2023 All-Eastern and All-National Choirs. The students were joined by their teachers, Liz Colpo, director of choirs at Lower Dauphin; Brandon Buterbaugh, director of bands at Hershey; and Brian Buterbaugh, orchestra director at Hershey. Also at the PMEA All-State Festival, Brian Buterbaugh received the 2023 Orchestra Director of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania-Delaware String Teachers Association.

finals rounds. As alliance captain, the team chose two additional robots (teams) to be part of its three-robot alliance that competed in each subsequent finals match against other three-robot alliances. In the MidAtlantic District Championships, the Krypton Cougars were an alliance captain in playoffs and were ranked first for individual performance. The team finished as finalists and scored the highest unpenalized score of the competition.

Worlds was marked by fierce competition, with a tremendous amount of damaging hits taken by all of the robots. A lot of the losses came from robots breaking down or

falling over. The Krypton Cougars’ robot, however, was one of the most resilient robots on the field, successfully competing in 16 matches and suffering minimal injuries.

The team successfully finished its first day of the competition ranked first out of 77 teams in its field. Other first-day rankings, based on wins and points scored, included 12th-best robot in the world out of more than 3,000 robots; 11th in the United States out of more than 2,500 robots; first in the MidAtlantic District out of 127 robots; and first in Pennsylvania out of 58 robots.

Library to kick off Summer Reading Program

Middletown Public Library will kick off its Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 12. This year’s theme will be “All Together Now,” and it will revolve around kindness, friendship and unity. Separate programs will be offered in children, teen and adult categories, and those who track their reading progress will win prizes.

The library is partnering with Middletown Area School District (MASD), Middletown Area Recreational Alliance and Together Y.O.U.T.H. to bring children up to age 18 free programming

throughout the summer. The library has received many donations for the Summer Reading Program from local businesses and organizations, including the Frey Trust and the Hershey Chocolate Company. Prizes will include Twin Ponds ice skating passes and gifts cards from Karns Quality Foods, Sharp Shopper and Giant.

New children and youth services librarian Madelyn Sheridan and cataloger Daphne Hess are putting together the Summer Reading Program.

During the second day, the team suffered its first loss in a close match against two of the top teams. The final score of this match shifted the Krypton Cougars into third place. However, the team had an upset win in a match in which the Cougars had a predicted 40% chance of winning. Team members also persisted through a second highly disadvantaged match and, although they lost, they scored enough points to secure the ranking of first rank and first alliance captain.

The third day consisted of alliance selection and the playoff rounds. The Cougars’ first-ranked alliance worked its way through the bracket without suffering a loss, securing a spot in the division finals. In the finals, the Krypton Cougars alliance was up against the second-ranked alliance. The Cougars had previously beaten this alliance, tallying a personal high score. The Cougars’ alliance won its first match of the finals with a new personal high score.

Rotary Club honors essay contest winner

Lancaster Community Market will feature local bands and vendors

Lower

Dauphin High School ninthgrader Nolan

Gordon was recently named the winner of the Rotary Club of Hummelstown’s annual Four-Way Test essay contest. Nolan wrote about his experiences on a mission trip to Ohio, where he worked in an urban garden and orchard near Cleveland. The Rotary Club presented Nolan with a cash prize and a certificate of achievement.

The Rotary Four-Way Test is one of the group’s guiding principles, providing a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical framework for the things

Rotarians think, say or do in their personal and professional relationships. The Four-Way Test asks the questions “Is it the truth?” and “Is it fair to all concerned?” as well as “Will it build goodwill and better friendships?” and “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

let’s get social

The Lancaster Community Market will return to the area on Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at 311 Stanley K. Tanger Drive, Lancaster, located by the guest service area of the Tanger Outlets, and it will include live entertainment, kids activities and local vendors and nonprofit organizations.

Live music for the Lancaster Community Market will be provided by gospel musician Chuck Mock and local outfit Small Town Troubadours, a rock band based in Quarryville. Small Town Troubadours’ members include high school students from the Solanco and Hempfield school districts.

Multiple local vendors will sell a variety of items during the event, including homemade jewelry, hand-poured candles, wreaths, dog treats and accessories and bath products. Lancaster-based author Chas Williamson will have books available for purchase and signing.

Food and beverages will be available to purchase from a slew of food trucks, such as G’s Concessions, Brotherly Love Scratch Kitchen, Under the Bridge Cider, Joe’s Fish Sandwiches and Kona Ice of Lancaster.

Several nonprofit organizations will operate stations at the Lancaster Community Market to provide information and offer free activities for kids. Organizations such as the Lafayette Fire Department, Vital Theatre Company and many local food pantries will be

in attendance, and the children’s activities will include a bounce house and face painting.

The Lancaster Community Market was first organized in 2021 by MJ Small Business Squad, a marketing agency that seeks to promote locally owned companies in Lancaster. MJ Squad began organizing community events after the COVID-19 pandemic to assist business owners who were heavily affected by the resulting closures. When Tanger Outlets contacted MJ Squad about hosting an event, MJ Squad’s co-founder Megan Kalbach said that she was ecstatic about the partnership. “Tanger Outlets reached out wanting to support our mission, which is great because it’s such a hub for businesses in the area,” Kalbach added. “The event has had a large boost of support from the community and has helped us support so many businesses and nonprofits.”

The Lancaster Community Market drew over 1,000 attendees in its first year. Kalbach received a wave of positive feedback from those in the community, as well as visitors of Lancaster who were pleasantly surprised by the festivities. Due to the fact that buses from surrounding areas stop at Tanger Outlets, Kalbach said the location of the market helps to promote the culture of businesses in Lancaster and extend their reach.

For more information or to register as a vendor for the event, visit www.mjsquad .com/events.
