Families from outside the area whose children are treated at the Penn State Children’s Hospital receive temporary lodging and meals while staying at the Ronald McDonald House. In the past, the club set up and served the meals on-site for the guests. 2020 Elizabethtown Fair Canceled Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the board of directors for the Elizabethtown Fair is officially announcing the cancellation of the 2020 Elizabethtown Fair, which had been scheduled for Monday through Saturday, Aug. 24 to 29. Gov. Wolf recently announced that the “green” phase of reopening would limit gatherings, including fairs, to 250 people and would also include additional requirements and restrictions that would be impossible to
enforce at the Elizabethtown Fair. In addition, organizers have a sincere concern for the safety of volunteers, exhibitors, concessionaires, sponsors, attendees, and the entire community. The board of directors is grateful to community members for their understanding and loyal commitment to the Elizabethtown Fair during these unprecedented times. Organizers are looking forward to next year’s fair, set for Monday to Saturday, Aug. 23 to 28, 2021.

The AACA Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, has a new way to donate. For those who have a favorite automobile or brand, Adopt-A-Car is a way to help the museum while supporting a favorite vehicle. One can rekindle his or her personal automotive reflections by adopting a car in the museum’s collection, which may include a make and model that holds special meaning or one that was previously owned. The Adopt-a-Car Program offers
the opportunity to put one’s name on a special car display. By adopting a car, readers provide financial support for the museum’s mission of preserving automotive history for future generations. A yearly tax-deductible sponsorship makes a contribution to the hobby and, at the same time, gives a personal interest in the museum. The benefits of car adoption are receiving a Supporting Museum Membership that includes unlimited admission to the
museum for 12 months, four guest passes valid for 12 months from the date of issue, complimentary admission for the cardholder and a guest to special events, and discounts in the museum store. Adopters’ names are displayed on a museum sign along with a description of the car. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Greater Hershey Area -
Hummelstown Area Historical Society, 32 W. Main St., has unveiled its newest exhibit, “Put a Lid on It.” Years ago, paper clips, pieces of scrap materials, thread, recipes, seed, nails, and pens were saved with the intention that they would be used on another day. The boxes, baskets, cans and jars used to store these items were often repurposed as a storage site for something entirely different. The exhibit will remain open through September and may be viewed during normal business hours of Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.
The Hershey Public Library will offer a virtual program called Bibliophile’s World of Wine on Thursday, June 25, at 7 p.m. on Zoom. Aly Tran, the library’s adult program manager, will join Cassel Vineyards in Hershey for an evening of wine and book pairings. No consumption of alcoholic beverages is required, but people must be age 21 or older to participate. Registration is requested through the Events Calendar at www.hersheylibrary.org.

Hershey Lions Receive Honor Three Hershey Lions have been recognized with milestone Diamond Centennial Membership Awards for their many years of dedicated service to the Hershey Lions Club and the community. Lions Dave Crist, Brian Lynch, and Pete Van Zandt were congratulated on their achievement during an earlier Hershey Lions Club meeting. The award is associated with Lions Clubs International’s (LCI) 100-year anniversary. LCI’s 100-year anniversary is a multi-year celebration focusing on service. LCI surpassed its goal of helping over 200 million people globally, and the Hershey Lions Club is doing its part in Derry Township. The club is currently collecting food for Derry Township residents and is also planning a legacy project with the Hershey Public Library for later this year. When meetings resume, the Hershey Lions Club will continue meeting on the first and third Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. A live performance of “Stewardship: A Biblical Perspective on How to Use Our God-Given Resources” will occur on June 21 at 10 a.m. at Blainsport Mennonite Church, 85 S. Blainsport Road, Reinholds. “Parables of Jesus” will be presented live at Calvary Chapel of
Lebanon, 740 Willow St., Lebanon, on June 28 at 6:30 p.m. The performance is an Africaninspired telling of the stories that Jesus told, including the stories of the sheep and the shepherd, the Good Samaritan, and the Prodigal Son. It utilizes traditional African instruments and movement to convey the heart of God in a colorful, energetic way.
School Supports Health Care Staff St. Joan of Arc School in Hershey launched a Meal Donation Program to benefit its local hospital, Penn State Hershey Medical Center (Med Center). The private Catholic elementary and middle school will collect donations from school families and community members in order to buy meals from local restaurants to feed the health care workers at the Med Center. In under 48 hours since the program launched on March 31, the school raised over $7,500, enough for 700 lunches. This program not only helps to support the workers at the Med Center, but it also supports local small business restaurants whose finances may be negatively affected by restrictions regarding dine-in services.
St. Joan of Arc School recently expressed its appreciation for the medical staff throughout the globe, who are working to keep everyone safe and healthy. On March 25, the school dedicated the day to making thank you cards for health care workers and posted a photo album of its students showing off their cards on its Facebook page. In the midst of the current pandemic, St. Joan of Arc encourages members of the community to remember that there are always good people who are doing good things. Cotter Completes Career Program Nearly 50 students from Bloomsburg University, Bloomsburg, participated in the professional development program at the Greenly Center in downtown Bloomsburg from Feb. 28 through March 1. More than 60 alumni and organizational partners volunteered during the event, both in person and virtually. Matthew Cotter from Hummelstown was among the student participants. Cotter is a member of the Class of 2020 and is a marketing major. During the two-and-one-halfday Career Intensive Boot Camp
(CIBC), students learned the soft skills of professionalism through team building and personal branding exercises, alumni panels, employer presentations, and a networking lunch and etiquette dinner. Topics included everything necessary to ensure professional success after graduation, from navigating career paths and company culture to money management and job searching. Students also had opportunities to have their resume and cover letter reviewed and to practice interviewing and engaging in professional networking.

Like banks across the country, Northwest Bank (NWBI), headquartered in Warren, has been working to help small businesses curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as the Small Business Administration (SBA) released guidance to banks on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Northwest teams assembled to analyze the details and develop an open, client-friendly approach to the application process, no matter a business’s industry or size. The company launched a number of ways to connect with clients and work with them to collect the necessary application information, according to Mark Reitzes, Northwest’s head of commercial banking. Clients applying through Northwest could either connect one-onone with a business banker, who helped to gather the information required by the SBA, or submit their loan package through Northwest’s online application portal. “As soon as our portal opened, the company’s business bankers proactively reached out to clients to let them know that the bank was ready to take applications,” Reitzes said. “We provided checklists, a step-by-step video and FAQs to ensure they fully understood the relief program and requirements. We received applications from businesses of all sizes and industries across our entire four-state footprint.” Despite Northwest’s efforts, nationwide demand was much greater than expected. Funds were drained in just a few days after launch and the SBA stopped accepting applications. While many banks followed the SBA’s lead and stopped taking applications between the first and second rounds of government funding, Northwest took a different approach. In hopes that the PPP would be funded for a second round, the bank continued to help clients gather and prepare application information for submission. Because of this approach, Northwest was ready to submit applications when the SBA’s loan portal reopened. According to Reitzes, nearly 100% of the PPP loan applications that Northwest received were approved by the SBA - a total of 3,700 loans that will provide more than $425 million worth of relief. Northwest’s efforts served employers of all sizes across a wide span of entities, including manufacturing, restaurants, religious organizations, professional services, beauty salons and contractors. These efforts helped protect more than 35,000 employees. Northwest Bancshares Inc. is the holding company of Northwest Bank. Northwest operates 206 fullservice community banking offices and eight free standing drivethrough facilities in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana. On May 12, Lebanon Community Health Center distributed 300 boxes of food and fresh produce to its neighbors and patients in northern Lebanon city. The community in this area has experienced some of the highest concentrations of the COVID-19 virus in Lebanon County, according to the health center. In addition to the food, the health center provided residents with a mask, hand sanitizer, and information on how to keep themselves and household members safe. The goal is to address some of the social determinants of health that contribute to an
increased risk of contracting the virus. Lebanon Community Health provides medical, emergency dental, and behavioral health care. The health center also provides testing to patients who are experiencing coronavirus symptoms. It is a fully bilingual facility.
