VOL XXXIII • NO 51
Middletown Kiwanis Supports Community T he Kiwanis Club of Middletown completed various service projects and funding efforts in the second quarter of 2021. In April, the Kiwanis Club provided funding to help the Middletown Fire Company invest in an internal communications system for the new pumper that was purchased for the fire company by the Borough of Middletown. The new pumper should be in service in the next few months.
In May, the members of the club donated items to Caitlin’s Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides arts and crafts activities to children who have chronic or lifethreatening illnesses. Kiwanians cut pages and covers for 20 large 50-page journals, four medium-size journals, and 10 small journals. They also assembled and decorated the journals, and they cut, assembled, and embellished 10 small and 11 medium-size sticker books. The items were boxed and delivered to Caitlin’s Smiles along with two activity books. On June 1, club secretary Laura Clark presented John Grayshaw, director of the Middletown Public Library, with a check to fund over 83% of the cost of the library’s Summer Reading Program for children. To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Middletown, visit www.facebook .com/kiwanismiddletownpa.

Colburn has produced and written three national television specials on President Dwight D. Eisenhower and created a five-hour television series titled “The Eisenhower Legacy.” His presentation will be a showing of his new documentary, “Ike, 1941-1945: The Making of an American Hero.” Colburn premiered the film virtually on Sept. 16, 2020, the night before the dedication of the Eisenhower Memorial. The program examines the decisions that Eisenhower made on the battlefield - and behind the scenes - and why it mattered to the world in the 1950s that he was “the man who beat Hitler.” Colburn is an independent producer of history-based documentaries. A native of Highland Park, Mich., he received his bachelor’s degree in history from Aquinas College in 1959 and his master’s degree and doctorate in history from Michigan State University. Colburn continues his work on television, media education, and non-broadcast video projects. The Zoom meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. To attend, visit www.centralpa ww2roundtable.org. STEM Team from pg 1 Through their research, the STEM team members found that only 24% of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) jobs in Pennsylvania were held by women. Because students often form a career identity by the end of middle school, that became the STEM team’s target audience. The goal of W.I.S.E. is to have students receive a notification each day of an important contribution, an award, a fun fact, an event, and links about women in STEM fields in an attempt to normalize women in STEM fields. The team designed and built the W.I.S.E.
app on the Appy Pie platform. Led by STEM coach and teacher Elizabeth Kirman, LDHS has a six-year history competing in the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Competition. At the regional level (Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, and northern York counties), LDHS STEM teams have earned one firstplace title, two second-place honors, and one fourth-place finish. At the state level, LDHS STEM teams have placed third overall, first in both the people’s choice and sustainability categories, and an honorable mention.

Xfinity Store Opens In Hummelstown Comcast opened a new Xfinity Store on June 9. The new store is located in Hershey Square at 1154 Mae St., Hummelstown. It is the 10th Xfinity Store in central Pennsylvania, designed to give customers more convenient access to see and experience Xfinity’s suite of products or interact with store staff. Comcast also operates central Pennsylvania Xfinity stores in Lebanon, Harrisburg, Chambersburg, Mechanicsburg, State College, Lancaster, Williamsport, Wyomissing and York - part of a network of 26 Xfinity Stores throughout the Keystone Region. Xfinity Stores range in size up to 4,000 square feet and are located in shopping destinations already familiar to local customers. In addition to receiving product demonstrations, customers can ask Comcast experts about their current services or devices,
learn how Xfinity apps make it easy to manage their account, sign up for all Xfinity services, pay bills at kiosks, return or acquire equipment and purchase accessories for mobile devices like cases, screen protectors and power supplies, as well as smart accessories for the home. Customers can also go to www.xfinity.com/support, click “Visit an Xfinity Store” and make an appointment. To keep employees and customers safe in the wake of COVID-19, all Xfinity retail stores are operating with increased safety measures, including limited store capacity; hand sanitizing stations; directional signage and clear barriers; increased store cleanings throughout the day; and the requirement that all employees and customers wear face coverings. Visit www.comcastcorpora tion.com for more information.
Students Given Scholarships East Hanover Lions Club recently awarded two 2021 Jonas J. Walmer Service Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. The recipients of the scholarship are Ethan Peterson of Lower Dauphin High School and Emily Hauck of Northern Lebanon High School.
