A Genius At Genealogy BY FRANCINE FULTON

ric Schubert, a student at Elizabethtown College who is serving as an intern this summer at the Hershey History Center, began studying genealogy at the age of 10 as a hobby. In the decade since then, Schubert has helped adoptees find their birth parents, created family trees for those interested in their ancestry and has even helped law enforcement to solve cold cases. Schubert has started his own company, ES Genealogy, which offers family tree mapping and other services. “All in all, I probably spend 12 hours a day on my phone or computer working on (genealogy projects),” said Schubert. “I work on a dozen or two dozen cases at a time. I certainly keep myself busy.” Currently, Schubert is working on a variety of projects. “Finding parents for people who are adopted is part of it,” he noted. “Another part is genealogical-type mysteries that people have, (such as) ‘Where is my grandmother buried?’ I also help people do their own family trees.” “I always need to be mum on my police work: the only things I can publicly say at this time are the fact that I have a solved case in Pennsylvania, and I have about a half dozen other cases on my plate right now,” he added. Not all outcomes from Schubert’s work are positive. For example, he located the birth mother of one of his friends, who was adopted, but the mother did not want to communicate with her daughter. However, Schubert was able to find the same friend’s half-sister, and the pair had a tearful meeting. “There is definitely a lot of happy scenarios that occur all the time,” Schubert said, explaining the results of his research. “I always say I am part PI, part detective and part therapist.” Schubert will be a junior this fall

Former Teacher Named Seven Sorrows Principal BY FRANCINE FULTON

Angela Warner has been part of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic School for several years as a parent, Parents and Teachers Together (PTT) president, school board member and, most recently, a teacher. She will now take on a new role, as she has been named the school’s new principal. Warner succeeds principal Rebecca Harvey, who announced her retirement earlier this school year. Warner left a career teaching in public high schools in 2019 to teach middle school mathematics at Seven Sorrows and never thought she would one day become principal. “I’ve always been tagged as a leader in my See Teacher pg 2

Eric Schubert received a surprise phone call from New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy commending him for his work in genealogy.

Gov. Phil Murphy, which included a personal phone call from the governor. “It was a surprise call commending me for my genealogy work. And what a surprise it was,” Schubert said. More information about Schubert is available at www.facebook.com/ESGenealogy. Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state.

Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-atyour-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/summer -vibes-at-pa-beaches. • Bald Eagle State Park, Howard • Black Moshannon State

career path and worked in leadership positions,” said Warner. “Here, at Seven Sorrows, it was not in my train of thought, but as I saw where I fit in at the school and my strengths over the last two years, (I believed that becoming principal) was something I could easily transition to.” Warner attended John Carroll High School in Bel Air, Md., and earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education mathematics and elementary education at Bloomsburg University and a Master of Education in mathematics at Millersville University. “As a math teacher, my goal is for Seven Sorrows to be a STEM-certified school,” she said, noting that the school already has a STREAM program, where students can take part in projects involving science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math. Warner, who started an after-school math club attended by 75% of middle school students, would also like to start a public speaking and debate club, as well as a drama club. She also plans to stay connected to the students while

fulfilling her role as an administrator. “I feel that principals need to have an active role in the building. I want the children to see me every day,” Warner stated. “I am choosing to still teach one math class. I feel like in doing that I will stay connected to students and the teachers. Sometimes, unfortunately, the principal gets lost in the office and this is a way to avoid that. “ Warner emphasized that she is committed to providing students a quality Catholic education at Seven Sorrows. “On a daily basis my duties are to be the educational leader and foster relationships and allow our students to grow and learn,” she said. “As a Catholic school principal, (my role is) to model and enrich our Christian faith.” Seven Sorrows, 360 E. Water St., Middletown, is a parochial elementary school serving students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Enrollment is now open for the 2021-22 school year. The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their bestbefore date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First

introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their bestbefore dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers

pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com for more information.

This abstract art installation was created by Nye Elementary School students.

Nye Elementary School students recently took part in a creative activity as well as literacy and social activities with high-schoolers. Since schools were unable to hold their traditional art shows due to COVID-19 restrictions, Nye art teacher Christine Atkinson planned an abstract art installation on the school grounds. All Nye students in kindergarten through fifth grade contributed to the installation, which was unveiled on May 18. During the spring months, high school students from

Michelle McGinnis’ Child Development classes partnered with Maria Shaffer’s second-grade class and Michelle Kullman’s fourth-grade class at Nye Elementary School. After learning how important literacy development is, the high school students planned reading activities for the Nye students to complete with them via Zoom. On May 14, the high school and elementary students gathered at Schaffner Park to meet their Zoom buddies in person for fun on the playground as well as yard games and kickball.
