Hope Springs Farm Posts Update music therapy, community volunteering, crafts, and cooking, came to a halt. Volunteers and furloughed staff continued to care for the animals and plants. Volunteer staff also helped repaint and clean out buildings used for the day program activities. Adults with disabilities may have underlying conditions that could complicate the symptoms of COVID-19. The farm offered families the opportunity to visit the farm, using social distancing precautions, for growers to see the animals they had been caring for. See Hope Springs Farm pg 2 Hope Springs Farm in Hershey has remained closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and began weekly Zoom parties for its growers. Elizabethtown College students Lauren Skorupski (left) and Kellen Skorupski posted pictures of the farm’s animals as part of the weekly Zoom parties for growers.

Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, had to close during the COVID-19 pandemic. The farm hosts a day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who are referred to as “growers.” On March 17, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services - Office of Developmental Programs (DHS/ODP) instructed all-day programs and prevocational programs in Pennsylvania to close until further notice. The stay-at-home order was issued on March 20. All programming for growers, including

The farm also provided families with a list of local parks that the growers usually visit for their community outings. DHS/ODP announced that they would receive retainer payments until the pandemic subsides. These payments meant that all staff would have their jobs back and the farm program would be available for growers when they are allowed to return. However, annual fundraisers are a large part of the farm’s ability to continue its programs for growers. Fundraising events scheduled for April, May, and June were all canceled. The farm’s temporary closure left growers quarantined in their own homes. Growers and their families had to adjust to a new way of life, one without their program at the farm. Hope Springs Farm’s online presence became increaslingly important. On June 1, the farm began holding Zoom farm parties on weekdays. The parties are free to

growers, prospective program participants, and family members. The Zoom parties begin with an introduction from executive director Jim Gainer, who shows the growers their animals and gardens that are cared for by staff. Other activities that are included in Zoom parties are singing, crafts, cooking, yoga, and story reading. Elizabethtown College students studying occupational therapy joined the farm parties and provide segments for growers as part of its college internship program. Staff have also created activities for growers on Zoom. The Zoom parties provide growers with opportunities for mental and physical activity while they remain at home. The farm upgraded its internal Wi-Fi capacity in order to do the Zoom parties every day, which has increased the need for funding. Mason Barrick, Brayden Harris and Luke Spangenberg of Troop 97 have earned their Life Scout rank. As with each Boy Scout rank advancement, there are specific requirements to complete, and for Life Scout this begins with being active in a troop for six months as a Star Scout. A Life Scout must also earn 11 merit badges as well as participate in six hours of community service. The Scout must also hold a position of responsibility within the troop and must follow the EDGE (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable) method to teach younger Scouts a skill. Mason has attended regular troop meetings and has gone on troop camping trips including Jamboree On The Air (JOTA), Klondike, and Wizard Safari. His community service activities include collecting donations in Scouting for Food, serving at the Londonderry Fire Company’s fish fry, rolling eggs for Geyers United Methodist Church (UMC) Easter eggs, running games for vacation Bible school at Geyers UMC, volunteering as an accident victim for the Harrisburg International Airport’s Disaster Days training drill, dressing in costume to hand out candy during the Geyers UMC annual Trunk or Treat, and helping fellow Scouts work on their own Eagle Scout Projects. Mason was elected as the senior patrol leader for Troop 97, the highest youth position in a BSA troop. As the current troop guide, Mason uses the EDGE formula regularly to assist young Scouts in learning new Scout skills. Mason is the son of Ed and Jamie Barrick of Middletown. He is an eighth-grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School. Brayden has participated in weekly troop meetings and trips, his favorite being Eastern State

Penitentiary and the USS New Jersey. With the troop, he also visited the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; Dover International Speedway; Gifford Pinchot State Park; and the battlefields of Gettysburg. He participated in a week of summer camp at Trexler Scout Reservation. Thus far, Brayden has earned 29 merit badges, including nine required for the Eagle Scout rank. In 2019, he was elected as senior patrol leader. In this role, he was charged with planning weekly meetings, assigning duties to junior leaders, and setting a good example to all Scouts. Brayden was also tasked with presiding over the yearly planning meeting during which the Scouts discussed and voted on what activities the troop would attend in the coming year. He has used the EDGE method to teach younger Scouts knots. Brayden volunteered at the Londonderry Fire Company’s fish fry, sang with his troop at the Middletown Home Christmas show, collected donated goods

during the yearly Scouting for Food, and serves regularly at his church, Evangelical United Methodist Church. Brayden is a junior at Lower Dauphin High School. Luke attends weekly troop meetings as well as campouts, which have included the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center and a week at Trexler Scout Reservation. His favorite trip to date was a weekend at the United States Naval Academy. The troop enjoyed overnight camping, presentation of the cadets, and a football game. Thus far, Luke has completed 29 merit badges, including 11 of the designated 13 Eagle Scout merit badges. He has helped with Easter egg making and the Easter egg hunt at Geyers UMC. At the annual Londonderry Fire Company fish fry and the 193 Airwing Ceremony, Luke has served meals, bused tables, refilled beverages, and washed dishes. He exceeded the required six hours of community service needed for the rank of Life Scout.

Luke was elected troop guide, an experienced Scout who leads the newest Scouts of the troop through their first year. He guided the younger Scouts in troop operations. Luke attends Lower Dauphin High School. He is the son of Laura Spangenberg of Hummelstown. Troop 97 is sponsored by the Londonderry Fire Company. Registration is required for all story time programming. A Zoom link and instructions on how to join will be emailed to participants before each session. Born to Read will be held on Mondays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. for babies from birth through 18 months. Participants will experience songs and stories together to help babies learn sounds, language, and a love of books. Family Story Time will be offered on Tuesdays from 6 to 6:45 p.m. The program will share stories, songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and more to help children build their skills and be ready to succeed at whatever is next. The program is designed for families with children of all ages. Toddler Story Time will take

place on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. In addition to songs, stories, and more, adults will learn tips and tricks to continue teaching at home. The program is designed for toddlers ages 19 to 35 months. Preschool Story Time will be held on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. The program is open to children ages 3 to 5. Stepping Stones to Milestones was developed with the help of a focus group of story time parents. During the focus group sessions, the library system learned that parents wanted confidence boosters, like visuals and take-home materials to help them offer their own story time experiences at home. As a result, story times were revamped to help parents and caregivers become more confident in being their child’s first teacher. During story times, whether online or in person, parents and caregivers learn early educational techniques that can be used at

Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the oncampus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the

School Supports Health Care Staff St. Joan of Arc School in Hershey launched a Meal Donation Program to benefit its local hospital, Penn State Hershey Medical Center (Med Center). The private Catholic elementary and middle school will collect donations from school families and community members in order to buy meals from local restaurants to feed the health care workers at the Med Center. In under 48 hours since the program launched on March 31, the school raised over $7,500, enough for 700 lunches. This program not only helps to support the workers at the Med Center, but it also supports local small business restaurants whose finances may be negatively affected by restrictions regarding dine-in services.

St. Joan of Arc School recently expressed its appreciation for the medical staff throughout the globe, who are working to keep everyone safe and healthy. On March 25, the school dedicated the day to making thank you cards for health care workers and posted a photo album of its students showing off their cards on its Facebook page. In the midst of the current pandemic, St. Joan of Arc encourages members of the community to remember that there are always good people who are doing good things.
