Harrisburg Has A New Women’s Tackle Football Team BY FRANCINE FULTON
A Genius At Scouts Practice CPR, First Aid Skills Scouts of Troop 97 in Londonderry Genealogy Township recently gathered for a weekend of first aid and CPR training. First aid skills are reinforced at every level of a Scout’s journey. A Tenderfoot Scout learns how to properly treat simple cuts, blisters, insect bites, and minor burns. Advancement to the Second Class rank is dependent in part upon understanding how to treat emergency cases, such as someone who has stopped breathing, has had a stroke, or has severe bleeding, a

Eric Schubert, a student at Elizabethtown College who is serving as an intern this summer at the Hershey History Center, began studying genealogy at the age of 10 as a hobby. In the decade since then, Schubert has helped adoptees find their birth parents, created family trees for those interested in their ancestry and has even helped law enforcement to solve cold cases. Schubert has started his own company, ES Genealogy, which offers family tree mapping and

“Women can do whatever they want to do. My ladies are here to show that it can be done,” said Tiffany Thomas, owner of the Harrisburg Havoc, a new competitive women’s full tackle football team. The team is currently seeking female players age 18 and over to join the team in its inaugural season. “The season will start next spring, but the ladies have started agility and conditioning now,” said Tiffany. “They will play in full pads and go by college rules, so there will be 11 girls on the field.” Tiffany noted that games will most likely be played at Harrisburg and Steelton-Highspire high schools. The schedule will be released in October or November. The Harrisburg Havoc is part of the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA), which has teams throughout the United States. Teams include the Tampa Bay Inferno, the Boston Renegades and the Minnesota Vixen. Teams in Pennsylvania include the Pittsburgh Passion. “There was another team in the
Harrisburg area, and they folded. They did not have a season in two years. That is why I started the new team,” Tiffany explained. “I have a lot of returning players (from that team).” Currently, the Havoc is holding evening practices at South Side Elementary School in Harrisburg on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. “(The team members) are from all over central PA. I have ladies that travel from the Lehigh Valley, Marietta, Lancaster and Lackawanna County,” Tiffany noted. Tiffany’s daughter, Kaeli, 23, has been playing women’s tackle football for the past five years. She said that female football players are just as competitive as their male counterparts. “I think the one big thing is showing the boys we can do what they do; we can hit just as hard as they do,” said Kaeli. Kaeli, who plays right guard on the offensive line, has been injured while playing tackle football. “In my second season, I broke my hand. It got stuck in another girl’s helmet,” she recalled. “When you have a cast, (they) wrap it in foam, and I stilled played.” Members of the Harrisburg Havoc, including (from left) Reba Trinta, Kaeli Thomas, Terrance Parsons See Harrisburg Havoc pg 12 and Lesly Trinta, volunteered at a “Feed the Children” event with the Parsons Foundation.

Playhouse To Perform “Rock Of Ages” The Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, has announced that “Rock of Ages” will be its first in-person show since the pandemic began. The show will be performed on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m. from Thursday, July 22, to Sunday, Aug. 1. This Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical features music of the ‘80s, including songs by Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, and Twisted Sister. A rock band is present on stage throughout the production .The show centers on one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, which is threatened when a group of developers arrives into town with plans to build a strip mall. “Rocks of Ages” is directed by Jasmine Bucher, recipient of a 2018 Tony Award Honorable Mention for Excellence in Theatre Education. With a 100% volunteer cast and production team, this show features a cast of 20 performers
ranging in age from 18 to nearly 60. The cast includes both Hershey Area Playhouse regulars and new performers. Rehearsals blended digital vocal and characterization rehearsals in 2020 with live rehearsals in 2021. The delay of one year enabled the playhouse to receive the most upto-date script, which includes a new song. “Rock of Ages” is for mature audiences only and includes adult language. Current CDC and local guidelines will be followed. For more information or tickets, visit www.hershey areaplayhouse.com. Information is also available by calling 717-533-8525.

Hour With Eric.” “I’ll be there working on a variety of research projects and historic preservation projects. I just started in June, so it’s still a new experience,” he said of the internship. “It’s been a fun opportunity so far.” When asked what his plans are after college graduation, Schubert said he hopes to incorporate his genealogy business into his future. “I am just hoping my varied experiences will guide me to where I need to be,” he stated. Schubert, who was featured on the national TV news show “CBS This Morning,” has received commendations from the New Jersey State Assembly and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, which included a personal phone call from the governor. “It was a surprise call commending me for my genealogy work. And what a surprise it was,” Schubert said. other services. “All in all, I probably spend 12 hours a day on my phone or computer working on (genealogy projects),” said Schubert. “I work on a dozen or two dozen cases at a time. I certainly keep myself busy.” Currently, Schubert is working on a variety of projects. “Finding parents for people who are adopted is part of it,” he noted. “Another part is genealogical-type mysteries that people have, (such as) ‘Where is my grandmother buried?’ I also help people do their own family trees.” “I always need to be mum on my police work: the only things I can publicly say at this time are the fact that I have a solved case in Pennsylvania, and I have about a half dozen other cases on my plate right now,” he added. Not all outcomes from Schubert’s work are positive. For example, he located the birth mother of one of his friends, who was adopted, but the mother did not want to communicate with her daughter. However, Schubert was able to find the same friend’s half-sister, and the pair had a tearful meeting. “There is definitely a lot of happy scenarios that occur all the time,” Schubert said, explaining the results of his research. “I always say I am part PI, part detective and part therapist.” Schubert will be a junior this fall at Elizabethtown, where he has a dual major of political science and history. He utilizes his research skills as an intern at the Hershey History Center, most recently offering a free virtual program about genealogy titled “History Happy

Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Grilling Safety Tips Shared
WE SELL & SERVICE NAME BRAND LAWN EQUIPMENT FROM:
Family cookouts are a summer tradition. While fun, cookouts present hazards, and several steps should be taken to keep everyone safe when the grill is fired up. Children and pets should be kept away from the grill. A 3foot child-free zone should be established around the grill. Grills should be used out-
doors only. They should be kept away from houses, deck furniture, and overhanging branches that might catch fire. Grease or fat should be removed from the grill tray so that it does not flame up. A grill should never be left unattended. People should also remember that drinking alcohol and grilling do not mix well.
