Hope Springs Farm Posts Update FIA Provides Medical Care, Food referred to as “growers.” On March 17, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services - Office of Developmental Programs (DHS/ODP) instructed all-day programs and prevocational programs in Pennsylvania to close until further notice. The stay-at-home order was issued on March 20. All programming for growers, including music therapy, community volunteering, crafts, and cooking, came to a halt. Volunteers and furloughed staff continued to care for the animals and plants. Volunteer staff also helped repaint and clean out buildings used for the day program activities. Adults with disabilities may have underlying conditions that could complicate the symptoms of COVID-19. Friends In Action (FIA) International, a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Aid has included medical care, medical supplies and food. FIA uses infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Recent projects aided residents of the hundreds of tiny villages along the coasts of the Amazon River, which are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. For most of the villagers, their town hospital has only 35 beds and one ventilator and is a multipleday journey by boat and on foot. Additionally, some villagers travel two days from their remote locations
to find medicines such as acetaminophen. FIA’s field leaders, Donna and Gary Ferch, reported that close to 90% of FIA’s co-workers in the area have contracted the virus. One of the pastors participating in the relief efforts was pastor Saul. Wearing his mask and gloves, Saul began knocking on doors and distributing food and medical supplies funded in part by FIA donors. Going door-to-door to indigenous See FIA pg 2

populations in the small towns and villages near Guayaramerin, Saul shared the Gospel and prayed with many villagers who already had COVID-19 and others who were afraid of catching it. Saul later contracted COVID-19 and experienced complications from the virus and diabetes. Among FIA’s efforts in Bolivia is El Misionero, a riverboat used to take medical personnel and the Gospel into unreached villages accessible only by the Amazon River. FIA began building the boat more than a decade ago, and each year, doctors, nurses, and dentists volunteer to treat more than 1,100 villagers for dewormings, prenatal care, minor surgeries, and vision and dental needs using the boat. One helper who worked on the boat was Medardo Rodriguez Dorado. Dorado championed the medical ministry for years by removing rotten wood, milling new timbers, and repairing the boat so it could be sailed it farther into the Amazon jungle to reach additional villagers. Dorado was well-known by other villagers for being proficient with a chainsaw. He and his wife con-

El Misionero’s first captain, pastor Manuel Bravo, also contracted COVID-19. Bravo is a national pioneer missionary who has also served as ministry outreach director partnering with FIA and an organization of seven evangelical Bible churches in Guayaramerin. Though in a high-risk category, he began moving toward recovery as a result of treatments provided by a team of volunteer doctors and nurses from El Misionero using medicines and intravenous therapy funded by donors to FIA. As the need is great, several churches and individuals have agreed to provide matching funds for donations up to $7,500. To donate before Saturday, Aug. 15, readers may visit www.fiaintl.org and select Bolivia Where Needed Most. Gifts will be used to provide intraveous therapy, breathing treatments, and medicine for those who are sick, as well as rice and beans for grieving families.
also provided families with a list of local parks that the growers usually visit for their community outings. DHS/ODP announced that they would receive retainer payments until the pandemic subsides. These payments meant that all staff would have their jobs back and the farm program would be available for growers when they are allowed to return. However, annual fundraisers are a large part of the farm’s ability to continue its programs for growers. Fundraising events scheduled for April, May, and June were all canceled. The farm’s temporary closure left growers quarantined in their own homes. Growers and their families had to adjust to a new way of life, one without their program at the farm. Hope Springs Farm’s online presence became increasingly important. On June 1, the farm began holding Zoom farm parties on weekdays. The parties are free to growers, prospective program participants, and family members. The Zoom parties begin with an introduction from executive director Jim Gainer, who shows the growers their animals and gardens that are cared for by staff. Other activities that are included in Zoom parties are

Staff have also created activities for growers on Zoom. The Zoom parties provide growers with opportunities for mental and physical activity while they remain at home. Library Story Times Planned Mount Hope Announces sions, the library system learned that parents wanted confidence boosters, like visuals and takehome materials to help them offer their own story time experiences at home. As a result, story times were revamped to help parents and caregivers become more confident in being their child’s first teacher. During story times, whether online or in person, parents and caregivers learn early educational techniques that can be used at home to build skills and set their child up for success. Children bond with their parents or caregivers, develop a love of reading, fine tune motor skills, and build reading and social skills. Readers may register for story times at www.dcls.org/events calendar. Information about story times and other library programs can be found at www.dcls.org/kidsprograms. All summer programs can be found at www.dcls.org/src. Most programs require registration. Registrants will receive a Zoom link and further instruction before the program is held.

Event formats will be modified to implement new safety initiatives designed to keep guests, performers and employees safe. These practices will include, but not be limited to, enhanced sanitization protocols, social distancing, event capacity management, the use of personal protective equipment and additional staff training. Book Club Reaches Milestones
Food Bank Seeks Help The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank needs help to continue to meet the increased demand it is experiencing in the wake of COVID-19. Since March, food bank volunteers have packed more than 153,000 Crisis Response Boxes, and additional volunteers are needed to help pack more as the economic impact continues. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must sign up in advance by visiting www.centralpafoodbank.org or calling 717-564-1700. They will then be scheduled at the food bank’s off-site Central Packing Operations facility, where they will be kept socially distanced while packing boxes for those in need. All volunteers must wear a mask and gloves, which can be provided by the food bank. They will be asked to sign a waiver indicating they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and have not come in contact with anyone experiencing symptoms in the past 14 days. Those who have traveled out of state are asked not to volunteer until 14 days have passed.
Friends Cancel Book Sale The Friends of the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, have canceled the 2020 book sale because of health and safety concerns from the novel coronavirus pandemic. The annual sale, which features thousands of books for all ages, was scheduled to take place from Friday, July 31, through Wednesday, Aug. 5. The sale is the largest fundraiser held by the Friends, and all proceeds support the library. Plans are to resume the annual event in 2021. Church To Collect Food, Sneakers First United Methodist Church, 64 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey, will hold a Pop-Up Community Drive on Saturday, July 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. Community members are invited to drop items on the church’s porch next to alley at the rear of church. The church will collect nonperishable food items for the Hershey Food Bank and sneakers for Love INC. The most needed items for the food bank are tuna, canned meats, baked beans, canned peas, peanut butter, canned pasta sauce, bagged rice, bagged noodles, and ketchup.
During its annual sneaker drive, Love INC seeks to collect more than 500 pairs of athletic sneakers for boys and girls. Shoes must be new, and brand-name sneakers are preferred for quality and durability. Donors are asked to avoid discount brands. Both high-top and low-top varieties are sought. Commonly needed sizes are boys’ (youth) 10 to 6 1/2, men’s 7 to 15, girls’ (youth) 10 to 4 1/2, and women’s 5 to 11. For more information, including updates specifics on sizes needed, readers may visit http://loveincgreater hershey.org/lace-up-with-love-inc -sneaker-drive-and-distribution/.
Library Programs Scheduled The Summer Reading Club continues at the Dauphin County Library System with online story times, book clubs and special educational programs planned for people of all ages. Readers may register for programs at http://dcls.org. Once Upon a Toon with Joe Wos for children age 6 and up will take place on Thursday, July 16, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Wos will draw, cartoon, and tell a story simultaneously. The program will also include a guessing game and a time for questions and answers. Registration is required. A Zoom link and instructions will be sent to participants before the program. Information about other regularly scheduled story times can be found at http://dcls.org/kidsprograms. The library’s programs for tweens and teenagers will continue with book clubs and the Dungeons and Dragons group.
Registration is required. Instructions on how to join and participate will be emailed to participants prior to each program. Build Your Own Book Club, for people ages 11 to 14, will be offered on Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and on Mondays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Participants will discuss different genres, authors, and characters. Weekly discussions will be held on Zoom. Weekly themes, genres, characters and more will be posted on Google Classroom. Dungeons and Dragons for people ages 13 to 18 will meet on Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. Programs for adults will be held on the “Adult Programs at The Library” group on the “Dauphin County Library System” Facebook page and at www.dcls.org/BeyondTheShelves. Armchair Traveler is posted by 11 a.m. on Mondays at
www.dcls.org/BeyondTheShelves. Participants will learn about history and culture, take virtual tours, and receive book, movie, and music recommendations. Writer’s Workshop meets on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Participants may visit the “Adult Programs” Facebook group for a new writing prompt inspired by the Summer Reading Program theme, “Imagine Your Story.” When ready, they may share what they have written in the comments. Mid-Day Get Away is posted by 2 p.m. on Fridays. Attendees may check the “Adult Programs” group for a video created by the library staff. Videos will range from cooking tutorials to art demos to musical performances. To learn more about and register for the Summer Reading Club, readers may visit http://dcls.org/src2020.
Summer Theater Camp Slated Hershey Area Playhouse and the Hershey Gardens will hold the annual Gardens Summer Theatre Camp in person. Students entering fourth to eighth grades are welcome to register for the summer performance camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to noon from Mondays through Fridays, July 13 to 17 and July 20 to 24. Participants will experience the entire process of stage performance from auditions to staging to performing, with choreographed combat included, culminating in a fully produced, original production of “Peter Pan.” The performance will take place on July 24 for
friends and family at Hershey Gardens, 170 Hotel Road, Hershey, in the Children’s Garden Amphitheatre. Costumes, props and set pieces will all be included. Professional teachers Laurie Petersen, Jennifer Feldser and Jill Panyard from the Theatre Academy at the playhouse, as well as assistants, will guide and teach the campers during the two weeks. During the camp, groups of students will be in close proximity to one another. In following the CDC and Gardens’ guidelines, students are not required to wear masks in the outside gardens, but will be asked to wear them when spend-
ing time in the indoor educational room. Parents and guardians will be asked to fill out a waiver on the first day of camp. The performances will follow social distancing guidelines, and friends and family will be notified during the camp of the performance time and protocol. There is a cost to attend. Registration information is available at www.hersheyareaplayhouse.com/ our-programs. Registration is first-come, first-served, with a limit of 30 students. For more information, readers may contact Laurie Petersen at swordchick@comcast.net.
Environmental Center Plans Programs Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host two programs. Pond Scoop will take place on Saturday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m. Attendees will explore a local pond to see what lives under the water. Participants should wear boots. Group size is limited. A Golden Eagle Hikers activity will occur on Sunday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. People over age 50
are invited to hike 2 to 3 miles on rocky and hilly trails. Participants should meet at the Environmental Center. Programs are free, but preregistration is required. For more information or to register, readers may email governordick@ hotmail.com or call 717-964-3808. Those registering should leave their name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
Free Discussion Sessions Slated Diakon Family Life Services will host free online discussion sessions for adults. Called Coffee and Conversation, the program is designed to provide a healthy outlet for people who want to talk about life during the pandemic, chat with others about experiences or suggestions, and avoid social isolation. The Zoom sessions will be held from 8 to 9 a.m.
on Wednesdays and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Fridays. People interested in participating are asked to visit the following web sites to register and receive access information. For Wednesdays, readers should visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/MNF RJ5S. For Fridays, readers should visit www.surveymonkey .com/r/YQG9PSG.

In July 2010, Middletown Public Library director John Grayshaw created the Science Fiction Book Club (SFBC) at www.facebook.com/groups/ sciencefictionbookclub. The SFBC has been associated with the library since January 2017. Today, the SFBC has members from around the world, including the U.K., Canada, Australia, Spain, France, Poland, Russia, Brazil, Japan, and India. Like many libraries, the Middletown Public Library’s physical location was closed due to COVID-19 from March 15 to June 8, but the SFBC continued to thrive. On average, the book club adds 50 new members a week, but recently the book club was routinely adding 150 new members a week. The book club membership reached 6,000 in April and is currently at more than 6,500. In the SFBC, there are two monthly Group Read discussions that are voted on by members. These are a classic Group Read and a modern Group Read of books published since 2000. The July Group Reads are “City” by Clifford Simak and “Children of Ruin” by Adrian Tchaikovsky. To view the group read history, readers may visit www.facebook.com/notes/ science-fiction-book-club/group

Rite Aid Launches Miracle Balloon Campaign Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the
communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies
have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
State Farm To Offer Grants To Nonprofits A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists.
Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhood assist.com or call their local State Farm agent.
