about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities. The event also raised funds in support of providing outreach to assist those who have sight issues. For the event, the Hershey Lions were located at Karns Foods on Cherry Drive and at Pronio’s Market on West Caracas Avenue in Hershey. Both local businesses and their customers have been longtime supporters of White Cane Days. As far back as 1921, the white cane with a red band has been used as a means of helping blind persons to have independent mobility. Starting in 1930, Lions Clubs made and distributed white canes. Currently white cane laws are on the books of every state in the U.S. and other countries, providing blind persons a legal status in traffic. The white cane now universally acknowledges that the bearer is blind. The Hershey Lions Club provides eye exams and glasses for residents of Derry Township, large-print books for the local library, and a camper sponsorship for a blind/visually impaired camper at Beacon Lodge, located in Mount Union. For more information, readers may visit www.hersheylions.org.
Lower Dauphin High School freshman Aidan Powell won first place in the annual Hummelstown Rotary Club Four-Way Test Writing Contest. The Four-Way Test espouses Rotary’s guiding principles as a moral code for personal and business relationships. The test asks Rotarians to consider four things prior to making a decision. They ask “Is it the truth?” and “Is it fair to all concerned?” as well as “Will it build
goodwill and better friendships?” and “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” Powell’s essay discussed repairing, refurbishing and donating bicycles to those in need. Classmates Delanie Batula and Emily DeNotaris placed second and third, respectively. Honorable mentions included Britley Brubaker, Jack Francis, Lucy McCurdy, Abigail Perez, and Carlos Rodriguez.
Lower Dauphin High School teacher Karen Burk (far left) recognized students (continuing from left) Aidan Powell, Delanie Batula, and Emily DeNotaris, who were the top three finishers in the Hummelstown Rotary Club’s annual essay contest.

One On One With Jared Mees Ride To Support Four Diamonds By Chelsea Peifer
After Dustin Smith graduated from Hempfield High School in 2007, he was excited to head to the University of Central Florida to study electrical engineering. “He was very, very smart, and he was excited to be taking some advanced courses. During that first week of classes, he called me and said he didn’t feel good,” said Dustin’s mother, Christine Hogan. “He was a gamer, and he said that he couldn’t even play games because his hands weren’t feeling right.” Hogan urged Dustin to go to the campus infirmary, and from there he was admitted into a hospital in Orlando. “He had surgery that night because they Susquehanna Indian Motorcy- found a grapefruit-sized tumor on his cle Riders Group 1903, based brain,” recalled Hogan, who was able to out of Hernley’s Polaris-Indi- fly to Orlando to be with her son. “We were so fortunate to live near Hershey. Everyone there is absolutely wonderful. Their staff was so accommodating, and they really treat the whole person,” Hogan remarked. Four Diamonds helped to cover Dustin’s medical expenses that were not covered by insurance, and now Hogan continues to raise money to give back to Four Diamonds and pay it forward in any way that she can. The ride will follow country roads and covered bridges to Mees’ hometown of Honey Brook, where participants will stop at a restaurant owned by Mees’ grandfather. Once everyone returns to Hernley’s, a steak dinner will be served. Mees will continue to interact with riders. “It’s more of that intimate conversation, and he’s willing to answer any questions,” said Hogan. All individuals coming to audition should be prepared with a 16- to 32-bar piece of music. Song selection should not include songs from “Drood.” An accompanist will be provided. Individuals should also come ready to move in a short dance combination taught by the production’s director/choreographer. If necessary, callbacks will be held on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 8. There are four female and seven male principal roles. In addition to the principal roles, the show requires a flexible ensemble of six to eight people, equal parts men and women, with no specific ages. These ensemble members will weave in and out of the story in various guises and be featured vocally and in dance numbers throughout the show. The Playhouse is seeking performers who are comfortable interacting with the audience to either get attendees excited or set the mood for dramatic moments. Performances will be held in October. Additional audition information is available under the Get Involved drop-down menu at www.hersheyarea playhouse.com.

FIA Hosts Volunteers, Plans Mission Work
Friends In Action International (FIA) has been busy at its U.S. headquarters in Middletown. The facility is the hub for FIA’s strategic planning, fundraising, and support efforts that enable local volunteers to complete construction projects in extremely remote nations of the world while the Gospel is shared with those who have never heard it. More than 80 percent of FIA’s headquarters staff is voluntary or supported by private funding, resulting in more donated dollars going directly to the indigenous people FIA serves. In May, during FIA’s first Children’s Day, six children helped stuff and seal envelopes with The Challenge, FIA’s quar-
terly newsletter distributed to more than 3,000 supporters. More than 50 veterans and friends celebrated Memorial Day by attending FIA’s veteran appreciation breakfast. In addition, Barry Horst has begun as a shipping and warehouse manager, and Kimberly Horst has joined FIA as a human resources associate. This summer, the staff is organizing volunteer work trips to benefit the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua through biblical training sessions, as well as construction of a laundry and shower house and a playground. Planning for upcoming trips to Vanuatu also continues toward construction efforts on a base camp to house vol-

The 2019 recipients are September Nguyen from Central Dauphin East High School and Nakiah Baker from Halifax High School. Both recipients plan to attend Messiah College. September will study elementary and special education, and Nakiah will study secondary English and ESL education. The Dauphin County chapter’s scholarship committee distributed scholarship information to each public high school in Dauphin County. Guidance counselors submitted the required documents for qualified students who are pursuing careers in the field of education. Scholarship applications were to meet the following criteria: academic achievement, leadership, service to others, and financial need. High school transcripts, SAT scores, vitae, a personal essay,
and letters of recommendation were submitted. After much consideration, the committee selected September and Nakiah as the scholarship recipients.
