The 35th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes and Gardens will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided walking tour will offer a glimpse into the architecture and style of homes in a variety of Mount Gretna neighborhoods. Sites include tiny summer cottages, weekend getaways, and year-round “winterite” homes. Participants may also take a trolley ride to one home near the lake. Tour attendees will see how people have transformed the cottages to accommodate modern life while keeping the structures’ charm. An iconic home from a previous year is back on the tour. The cottage was built in 1903 by a New York industrialist and has one of the largest porches in town. Rumor has it that this house was designed on the back of a napkin by a famous architect. The tour is sponsored by Snitz Creek Cabinet Shop. Proceeds will benefit Gretna Music, an organization that has been presenting music in central Pennsylvania for more than 44 years. To purchase tickets in advance, readers may call Gretna Music at 717-361-1508, visit www.gretna music.org, or stop by any Stauffers of Kissel Hill location, the Gretna Emporium in Mount Gretna, or Snitz Creek Cabinet Shop, 2020 Cornwall Road, Lebanon. Tickets will also be available for purchase on the day of the tour for a higher fee. These tickets will be sold outside the Mount Gretna post office on Princeton Avenue and in front of the Mount Gretna Playhouse at 200 Pennsylvania Ave.
A variety of homes will be included in the 35th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes and Gardens on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Palmyra Resident Runs To Support Cancer Patients In October 2018, Ken Cook was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). Since then, Ken has aimed to keep his life as normal as possible and is doing well on his doctors’ course of action. Since Ken’s diagnosis, he and his family - including his wife, Chris, and their daughter, Megan - have become aware of many cancer patients without health benefits or support systems. To make a difference in their lives, Megan, a 24year-old Palmyra resident, signed up to run the Philadelphia Love Run Half Marathon on March 31. The Love Run raises money for efforts against cancer in the Philadelphia area, but Megan also wanted to touch the lives of cancer patients closer to home. She contacted the Hershey Medical Center and set up a fundraising site where friends and family could donate to the Hope for Healing Fund. That fund was intended to directly benefit patients locally who are dealing with having cancer and are also faced with challenges See Runner pg 3

Geisinger Announces New Partnership Geisinger has announced its has formed a partnership with Medial EarlySign, which creates machine learning-based solutions to aid in early detection and prevention of high-burden diseases. Medical EarlySign is partnering with Geisinger and its Steele Institute for Health Innovation to develop and deploy a suite of machine learning-based solutions to identify individuals at risk for a range of chronic and high-burden diseases. Partnering with Geisinger’s Steele Institute for Health Innovation, EarlySign’s LGI-Flag solution will be deployed to help health care practitioners identify patients who are at risk for significant lower GI disorders. LGI-Flag is an advanced software solution that analyzes medical data, including
changes in routine blood tests, to flag those who will benefit from further evaluation. Reflecting the Steele Institute’s efforts to transform health care delivery by implementing solutions that improve health, patient experience, care delivery and affordability, the partnership will also explore additional opportunities to benefit patients and their care providers. LGI-Flag has been used in health care systems around the world since 2015 to identify patients at risk for lower GI disorders associated with chronic occult bleeding. The technology will form the basis for Geisinger and EarlySign to address similar opportunities with other acute and chronic diseases. The partnership will make use of Geisinger’s infrastructure, data assets and care teams.

Newly Expanded Inpatient Unit Opens WellSpan Philhaven has opened an expanded inpatient unit at its Mount Gretna campus, with the aim of improving access to behavioral health care across central Pennsylvania. The expanded unit was scheduled to open to patients on July 22. The expansion added 5,000 square feet and 15 beds to the hospital’s extended acute unit - increasing the total number of beds in the unit to 40 - at its main hospital building on South Butler Road. The extended acute unit offers care for patients with complex mental health needs who require a longer-term hospital stay of up to six months. The expansion of the unit is part of a larger $3.4 million construction project that began in January at the Mount Gretna campus. The project also includes a separate, new 9,300-square-foot administrative building, which is scheduled to open by the end of the year, as well as new offices and conference rooms in the Mount Gretna main hospital building. Heck Construction of Denver is the general contractor for the project. The project will add approximately 25 jobs at WellSpan Philhaven. The newly expanded unit features ligature-free fixtures and furnishings, an activities room with large windows and a mix of private and semi-private rooms. Patients can leave the unit to eat in the main cafeteria in the Mount Gretna hospital building, as well as to take walks and to return to their communities, as staff members work to help them transition out of the unit.
Mantha Kotsalos, senior director of inpatient services for WellSpan Philhaven, said the expanded unit is intended to help meet a growing need for behavioral health care across central Pennsylvania. A Community Health Needs Assessment conducted by WellSpan Health identified access to comprehensive behavioral health services as a key need across the region. In response, WellSpan Philhaven is working to improve access to behavioral health care for patients at primary care offices, offering more online services and group therapy services. WellSpan Philhaven also has expanded behavioral health care offered in emergency rooms at WellSpan hospitals across the region. The expanded extended acute unit is one of three inpatient units at the WellSpan Philhaven 118-bed hospital in Mount Gretna, which includes a 44-bed acute unit for adults and a 34-bed acute unit for children and adolescents. Outpatient therapy, day hospital, peer support and other services also are offered at the Mount Gretna campus. The Mount Gretna campus also is home to Green Pasture, a separate 16-bed behavioral health care residence operated for and by the Plain community. WellSpan Philhaven is a behavioral health organization, with locations across Adams, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. It offers more than 50 programs at almost 30 locations, serving children, adolescents and adults.

The sale will be open during normal library hours, which will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 3; from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4; from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, through Wednesday, Aug. 7; and from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 8. A Family Fun Day will be held on Aug. 4. The event will include special activities for children such as a bounce house, as well as free ice cream. The library will be closed until 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, so volunteers can prepare for the sale. A preview night, for Friends members only, will take place on Aug. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. Individuals can register as members at the preview night or by visiting https://friendsofhershey publiclibrary.wildapricot.org/membership. Various membership categories are available. Members at the Individual or Family Member level may purchase up to 20 books on preview night, and those who
upgrade beyond the Member level will be entitled to purchase up to 40 books. The book sale will include DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, music, maps, magazines, and books for all ages. Books will be sorted by general topics, such as cookbooks, romance, textbooks, foreign language, art, and children’s. There will also be a special section of the more valuable books with special pricing. The Friends group raises funds primarily through membership and the annual book sale, with proceeds used to support the following programs and activities at the library: adult programs, adult reading groups, guest author visits, children’s and teen programs, Summer Reading Programs for children and teenagers, and special library collections. Funds are also used to make physical improvements, such as the redesign of the Hershey Room and the lobby. In 2018, the book sale raised more than $46,300. Readers with questions about the book sale may email HersheyLibrary Friends@gmail.com.
