Event Raises Funds For Scholarships The first Team Meghan 3K Walk and Silent Auction to benefit the Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund was held on June 16 at Cassel Vineyards of Hershey. Close to 130 walkers and volunteers gathered to raise funds and to honor and celebrate the life of Meghan M. Johnson and the impact she had on many people. Radio personality Patsy Sympson was the master of ceremonies. Information about the event and the

scholarship fund is available at www.teammeghan.org. A 2017 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School in Hummelstown, Meghan M. Johnson passed away on Nov. 21, 2017, after a long battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. She was five days shy of her 19th birthday. Scholarships are being awarded to two members of the Lower Dauphin High School Class of 2018 and will continue

every year in perpetuity. The scholarship committee’s goal is to expand the Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund to several other Pennsylvania high schools in 2019.

Conservation Team Wins Award The Fort Indiantown Gap natural resource conservation team, staffed by members of the Pennsylvania National Guard and Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, recently won the 2018 Secretary of the Army Natural Resources Conservation Team Award. State Representatives Sue Helm and Frank Ryan; deputy assistant secretary of the Army for environment, safety and occupational health Eugene Collins; U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania Adjutant General; Lebanon County commissioners Bill Ames and Jo Ellen Litz; and other dignitaries attended the awards ceremony on July 13. Fort Indiantown Gap is the busiest Army National Guard training center in the nation and winning an environmental award in addition to training a large volume of troops was highlighted during the ceremony. The team won for its successful, ongoing conservation efforts including the Army Compatible Use Buffer (ACUB) program, the prescribed burn program, and its work with reintroducing the Regal Fritillary butterfly and managing its critical habitat. Specifically, the environmental team partnered with the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation to acquire nearly 8,500 acres

adjacent to DeHart Reservoir through a conservation easement as part of the ACUB program. The preserved land includes aircraft flight paths that if developed, would restrict important training activities and disturb potential residents. The team also burns an average of 2,000 to 3,000 acres per year to establish and maintain native grasslands which also provide realistic military training areas for soldiers. Regularly conducting burns helps reduce the build-up of “fuels” and reduces military training delays caused by unplanned wildfires. The team also enhanced grassland by planting native vegetation and working with partners at Zoo America Hershey and Temple University to successfully conserve and propagate the rare Regal Fritillary butterfly, which thrives in the regularly burned habitat. The Pennsylvania National Guard, Bureau of Environmental Management, is committed to environmental excellence in supporting the missions of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs as well as the Pennsylvania National Guard. The bureau manages a large variety of programs ranging from endangered species to cultural resources to hazardous waste.

Negley Announces Retirement Elegance At Hershey Features Classic Vehicles Derry Township manager James N. Negley has announced his retirement to the board of supervisors effective Monday, Nov. 5, marking 45 years of service to the township. Negley was hired in 1974 as a police officer and was promoted to detective in 1976. He rose to the top position of chief of police for the Derry Township Police Department in 1991. He served as interim township manager in 1993 and again in 1996 when he was ultimately named manager. He will retire in Mount Joy with his wife, Deborah, and

James Negley spend more time with his daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons, who live nearby in Mount Gretna.

The Elegance at Hershey hosted its weekend of activities on June 8 to 10, including The Grand Ascent hill climb and Cars and Coffee. Due to inclement weather on June 10, several activities were moved inside The Hotel Hershey and the awards ceremony was held earlier than usual. Still, spectators were able to spend a portion of the day outdoors in the gardens viewing 75 collector cars as part of The Elegance Garden Party. Top five award winners were as follows: 1937 Bugatti T57S Atalante Coupe by Gangloff, Rare Wheels Collection, Governor’s Cup (Best of Show); 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Torpedo Phaeton by A.J. Walker, Terry and Jennifer Adderley, Founder’s Award; 1931 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria by LeBaron,

Joseph and Margie Cassini III, the Hotel Hershey Award; 1912 Little Giant D eight-passenger bus, Wayne and Barbara MacDonald, People’s Choice; and 1921 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Phaeton by Brunn and Company, Mark and Carolynne Corigliano, Jack Rich Award. As part of The Grand Ascent, 24 cars raced the historic hill course in the back of the Hotel Hershey. Charity rides were given in these cars at noon. Stefan Vapaa in his 1968 SAAB Sonett was the quickest over the twoday event. A highlight was the filming all weekend by Chasing Classic Cars of Velocity TV with its star, Wayne Carini. Carini and frequent guest Ralph Marano signed autographs and held a grudge match for the show, which is going to an hourlong

format this year. June 9 also featured the second year for the Cars and Coffee event and a new feature, a special race car display. More than 250 cars were shown at the informal car show, and the race car exhibit included more than 25 race cars of all kinds. A record crowd was in attendance. The honorary chairman was Nicola Bulgari, and Carini also served as grand marshal. The Elegance has previously donated more than $1 million

dollars to the JDRF, the AACA Museum, and the AACA Library and Research Center. The recent weekend’s events will allow The Elegance to donate to these organizations again. The 2019 Elegance at Hershey will be held from Friday to Sunday, June 7 to 9, 2019. For information on being a sponsor, making donations, or volunteering, readers may call The Elegance office at 717-500-5191 or email executive director Melissa Rau at mrau@TheEleganceathershey.com.
