Festival
to feature vendors, food, and music
BY FRANCINE FULTONAfter more than 50 years of offering a summertime carnival, FFO Inc., a local community service organization, will instead present a festival, featuring live music, food, children’s games and more, on Monday, Aug. 14, through Saturday, Aug. 19, at Schaffner Park, located at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Water Street in Hummelstown.
This year’s festival is designed to highlight local vendors. “It has always been called the carnival, but this year it is the festival,” said Alan Detweiler, FFO president. “We took out the word carnival because that (implies) rides. We wanted to involve the community more with local vendors and booster clubs.”
Among the attractions will be arts and crafts, goat petting, face painting and demonstrations by a tactical K-9 unit from central Pennsylvania and the Hummelstown Fire Department. There will be free nightly entertainment; attendees should bring lawn chairs for seating.
“The Air National Guard and the Army National Guard from Fort Indiantown Gap are coming,” Detweiler noted.
“The Air National Guard is doing a cornhole competition for the week, and the Army National Guard is bringing a climbing wall for the kids.”
Also featured during the festival will be a car show, a See Festival pg 2

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

FFO will offer a full menu of festival foods, including hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken fingers, ice cream, funnel cakes and popcorn. A beer garden will also be added for the first time this year in an enclosed basketball court. No alcohol is permitted in the park.
FFO began as the Fuzzy
Few Organization, which formed during Hummelstown’s 200th anniversary in 1962. “A couple of guys wanted to form a civic organization, and they all had a beard,” Detweiler explained. “So they were called the Fuzzy Few. At the time, it was all male. That’s how it all started.”
After playing an active role during the anniversary, the men in the club decided to apply for an official charter and operate as a nonprofit organization. The
group filed papers at the Dauphin County Court House in December of 1962, and on June 13, 1963, the Fuzzy Few Organization’s charter was approved. In 1991, the organization was renamed and incorporated as FFO Inc.
The goal of the organization since its founding has been to establish and support community and youthrelated programs. FFO currently supports Hummelstown youth football, cheerleading and basketball programs, as well as the Hum-
melstown Fire Department, the Hummelstown Food Pantry the Lower Dauphin sports booster clubs and many other groups and programs. FFO also awards college scholarships to Lower Dauphin High School students.
“We truly are involved in basically anything the town of Hummelstown sponsors,” Detweiler said.

Learn to tame trafficrelated stress
Most drivers have experienced aggravation while navigating the nation’s roadways. In fact, the automotive group AAA estimates that nearly eight out of 10 drivers demonstrate aggressive driving behaviors. Road rage is the extreme outcome of impatience or frustration behind the wheel and often stems from traffic-related stress. Drivers can take steps to reduce stress and recognize behaviors that may contribute to road rage.
Don’t rush. Leave plenty time to get to a destination. Drivers are more likely to be impatient and react to traffic stressors if they are racing the clock.
Calm down. Drivers who experience something that has angered or upset them should take time to calm down before getting behind the wheel. Be patient. Recognize that someone driving slowly may be lost or aging with diminished abilities.
Keep a safe distance. Tailgating can create animosity between drivers. By leaving room, people can avoid aggressive interactions between drivers that can contribute to frustration.
Do not honk unnecessarily. Honking out of frustration is unproductive and also may exacerbate stress levels and anger other drivers.
Take an alternative route. Drivers who know that certain roadways are plagued by traffic may want to find another route to avoid the traffic, even if the new route is longer.
Avoid traveling during rush hour. Roadways are busier at certain times of the day, and if possible, drivers may alter their schedule so that they commute during off-peak hours.
Share the driving. Split driving duties with others, particularly when feeling stressed out. Breaking up particularly long trips among a few drivers can relieve anxiety.
Driving can be stressful, but there are various ways to mitigate feelings that may escalate into anger and road rage.

Area residents warned of AI scams
As emerging artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities change the way people interact with computers, some scammers are using that technology to further manipulate people. The Dauphin County commissioners and law enforcement entities advise residents to stay on alert for AI-based scams.
Scammers sometimes use AI to manipulate the voices of people’s loved ones, noted Commissioner George P. Hartwick III. Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo added that he has heard reports of scams in which the voice on the phone closely mimics that of a relative of the call’s recipient. Scammers are believed to be collecting audio data from social media, voice messages and other sources.
Scammers targeted former Dauphin County treasurer
Janis Creason, who said she found the ploy to be quite convincing despite her years of training on scams. She received a call featuring a voice that sounded like her daughter’s. The voice spoke of being injured in a car accident near where her daughter was, in fact, attending a work conference. Creason then heard a male voice, supposedly that of a police officer, talking about the circumstances of the crash and the vehicle’s needing to be towed. Sirens could be heard in the background. Creason, who eventually reached her daughter and ultimately did not lose money, spent subsequent calls talking to what she believed to be her daughter, the officer and a public defender. Creason was given callback numbers and a case number she was told to
Fitzpatrick honored for athletic achievements
The Lebanon Valley College Athletic Department celebrated the athletic and academic accomplishments of more than 600 student-athletes during the 74th annual All-Sports Reception inside the Louis A. Sorrentino ‘54 Gymnasium.
Kathleen Fitzpatrick, a junior from Middletown, received the Outstanding Female Athlete Award.
Fitzpatrick is a two-time All-MAC Commonwealth First Team selection and was the Rookie of the Year last year. This season, she finished second in scoring in the conference, with 17.3 points per game. She also shot 35.5% on three-pointers, making a total of 54 while shooting 39.1% from the field. Fitzpatrick finished the year with 432 points, 115 rebounds, 54 assists, and 21
write down. It was not until the third call that Creason was asked for money.
Creason believes the car accident scenario was selected to mimic a recent one that happened in her real life. She cautioned people be alert for indicators that a call is a scam; for example, the “victim” may ask that no one else be told out of embarrassment or fear.

steals. In her two years at Lebanon Valley, she has accumulated 692 points, 152 rebounds, 88 assists, and 45 steals.
Additionally, Fitzpatrick was named to the City of Basketball Love (CoBL) All-Area Team for the past two years.
Fitzpatrick, who was named to the All-Rookie Team last year, earned a spot on the Fourth Team this year and was one of four Lebanon Valley basketball players named to the All-Area Team. CoBL is a nonprofit organization focused on the coverage of high school and college basketball in and around Philadelphia.
Fitzpatrick, a graduate of Middletown Area High School, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in business administration at Lebanon Valley College.
