Hi, everyone! Wow, it sure has been hot lately, hasn’t it?! This makes my new favorite things to be air conditioning, fans, and cool water! I wish I had a pool, but the creek will do! My Little Town I grew up in Royalton during a time when everyone treated each other like family. We went outside to play, we got dirty and we ate whatever Mom cooked. We ate sandwiches, penny candy, and ice cream bars from our local mom-and-pop stores. We’d go into the store, buy a bottle of soda, go back outside and drink it up, then go back in to get our nickel refund for the bottle, then buy a handful or more of penny candy! We played kickball; Mother May I; Red Light, Green Light; hide-and-go-seek; Simon Says; hopscotch; Frisbee; and hula hoops. We raced against each other in the street. We rode our bikes everywhere and didn’t worry about anybody bothering us. We swam in the creek in the summer and ice skated on it in the winter. There was no bottled water; we drank straight from the water hose. We weren’t afraid of anything but stray dogs (and most of them knew us and left us alone). The street lights were our reminder to get our behind close to the house so we could hear our mama when she yelled our name to come in for the night. School was mandatory. We watched our mouths around our elders because we knew if you disrespected any grown-up you’d get hit with whatever’s close! We went to Sunday school and sang in the church choir. We went to Youth Fellowship weekly, and it was fun! We were taught the “Golden Rule” ... treat others as you would like to be treated. I’m proud that I came from a close-knit community, and I will never forget where I came from! I love you, Mom and Dad! Directions: 1. Spread a thin layer of whipped cream in a square glass baking dish. 2. Layer graham crackers on top, then cover with a layer of whipped cream. 3. Sprinkle one-third of the strawberries on top, then layer with cream again. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until no more ingredients remain. (The top layer should be strawberries) 5. Drizzle with some chocolate syrup and dust with crushed up graham cracker crumbs, if you want! This step is optional! 6. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours. And Enjoy! (Makes approximately 9 servings … 4 if you are like my household.) Joke of the Week When our lawn mower broke and wouldn’t run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first - the truck, the car, playing golf - always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush . I said, “When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway.” The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp. Thank You Thanks to Tina Crumlich of Middletown for helping me write the opening piece I called “My Little Town.” I loved my childhood. Thank you to Mike and Marjie Markowski of South Hanover Township for the Prayer and the Food for Thought. You two are awesome!
Food for Thought “Do not fear, I am with you. Do not be anxious, I am your A Health Prayer for You God. In partnership with Rotary District 7390, WITF announced the winners of the Teacher Impact Awards on June 8. From a field of nearly 250 nominations, one teacher or team of teachers was selected from each of the seven counties within the Rotary district’s coverage area. The teachers were honored for their dedication to their students and community. Rotary District 7390 established the Teacher Impact Awards in 2005 with the goal to promote teaching and learning in its coverage area. COVID-19 added some challenges to the awards’ timeline. The nominations, which were received by Feb. 28, were scheduled to be judged in March. Winners would have been announced in April, with WITF television producers visiting each classroom and conducting interviews. A celebratory banquet was scheduled for May, where teachers and families could see the video features before the television special

broadcast in June. In the new school year, WITF plans to work with teachers and schools to create a 30-minute “Teacher Impact Awards” program to air on WITF in November. Then WITF and Rotary District 7390 will celebrate both the 2020 and 2021 Teacher Impact Award winners at a banquet in May 2021. WITF will accept nominations for next year’s Teacher Impact Awards in January 2021 at www.witf.org. The Teacher Impact Award
winners are as follows. Timothy Carroll teaches ninthto 12th-grade carpentry at Dauphin County Technical School in Dauphin County. Carroll understands that all students have their own backgrounds and struggles. He approaches students with unconditional kindness and shows them the support that they need personally as well as academically. He has provided many students with needed resources out of his own pocket.
Brenda Johnson teaches seventhto 12th-grade strings and orchestra in the Northeastern School District in York County. Johnson is a dedicated instructor, an advocate for school music programs and a visionary who has brought not only musical joy, but also the satisfaction of personal mastery and the pleasures of teamwork to many students over her years at Northeastern. Justine Garman teaches kindergarten in the Littlestown Area School District in Adams County. Margeaux Cronce teaches ninthto 12th-grade family and consumer science in the East Pennsboro Area School District in Cumberland County. Greg and Sheila Schmitt teach third grade in the Solanco School District in Lancaster County.
