Parkside Harmony honored at international competition
The members of Hershey’s own Parkside Harmony recently returned home wearing silver medals from the group’s finalist placement in an international choir competition in Louisville, Ky., from July 4 to 7. The live event was the 84th annual convention sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society, featuring top vocal ensembles representing eight countries.
Parkside Harmony is an internationally known male a cappella group of 50 auditioned singers. Since its founding in 2015 by artistic director Sean Devine, it has performed across southcentral Pennsylvania, as well as at music festivals and competitions across the United States, including Las Vegas, Orlando, and Nashville. Parkside Harmony had previously earned bronze medals at the international competition in 2017, 2018, and 2022. This year’s score and placement mark the group’s highest achievement to date.
“This year’s performance was extra special, as we feel we’ve finally come back from the pause in singing during the pandemic,” Devine said. “It’s taken a while for our singing community and even our audiences
to fully return to enjoying live music together again. This year’s convention was one we’ll never forget!”
Along with music director Vincent Sandroni, Devine and the rest of Parkside Harmony’s leadership team have been preparing for this performance for over a year. The journey to the 2023 championships commenced with a qualification at the Mid-Atlantic District convention, a local title that Parkside Harmony has won every year since 2017. Out of the hundreds of choirs from around the world that attempt to qualify in similar regional events, only 34 ensembles earned the right to compete at this year’s international convention.
“It’s fun to celebrate these accomplishments,” Sandroni added, “but we’re ready to move on to the next performance and to keep creating music that brings people together and lifts people up.”
Parkside Harmony’s 2023-24 season will include auditions for new singers and the coordination of several local concerts. More information on the group and its upcoming rehearsals and performances can be found at www.parksideharmony.org.
Manada Conservancy honors landowners
Murray and Rhonda Laudenslager received the 2023 Conservation Award on July 16 from Manada Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust that serves Dauphin County. Over the past 15 years, the Laudenslagers have preserved more than 360 acres of their land in upper Dauphin County. Their farmland, woodland and unique mountain wetlands of Peters Mountain and Powells Valley are now permanently protected.
The Laudenslagers were presented the award by Manada Conservancy executive director Will Dingman and Manada Conservancy board member Sally Zaino. Also in attendance at the awards ceremony was Hummelstown Mayor David Roeting and Sage McKeever, Miss Hummelstown.
The Laudenslagers, of Wayne Township, have worked with Manada Conservancy to protect multiple properties with the use of conservation

History Center wins grant for hockey-related collection
The Hershey History Center (HHC) has received a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). The grant funds will allow access to the Perley J. Hill Collection, which consists of homemade Hershey Bears “yearbooks” meticulously crafted by Hill, an ardent Bears season ticket holder. Yearbooks range from 1961 to 1980, and each contains one or two companion volumes. Contents include typed rosters, team photos, ephemera and programs, plus items that extend beyond the scope of the
Hershey team, such as an article on Tony McKegney, the only African American to play in the 1978-79 National Hockey League season. It is unusual for a historical society to have a dedicated specialty collection with the depth and breadth that the HHC’s Hershey Bears American Hockey League (AHL) collection has. The Hill Collection is a major enhancement to what the museum can offer researchers and sports enthusiasts, and the grant from the PHMC will enable HHC to make these documents accessible to the public.

“This is a day of family fun for everyone,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope, describing Biking for Brittany and the Walk of Love. The joint event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Star Barn Village, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.
The bike ride will feature a 31-mile course and a 62-mile course and will have a rolling start between 7 and 9 a.m. “For the cyclist in your group, we have Biking for Brittany - a metric century and metric half-century bike ride - which are simply beautiful routes, right along the Northwest River Trail,” Myers shared. “We have wonderful volunteers from KW Realty and Elizabethtown College who are handling all the rest stops and plenty of volunteer professional bike mechanics.” All types of bikes are welcome for the ride, from ebikes to race bikes.
Registration and check-in for the Walk of Love will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with festivities running until 3 p.m. “The Walk of Love is a day of fun to celebrate children and adoption, with live music from Steven Courtney and the Suitcase Musicians, games, face painting and, of course, a Kids’ Fun Run and Mile Walk.”

Proceeds from Biking for Brittany and the Walk of Love will raise funds to support the mission of Brittany’s Hope, aiding orphaned and at-risk children worldwide.
Participants will have the option to bring a picnic lunch or purchase refreshments from food trucks onsite, and self-guided tours of the Star Barn property will be available.
“If you’re looking for an opportunity to see the property and enjoy a picnic lunch, here’s your chance,” Myers stated. “In addition to the fun you’ll be having, you’ll be supporting orphaned and at-risk children and helping to unite children with families who have the heart to adopt a child with special needs.”

The center’s archives and museum represent a narrative that is unique to Derry Township, founded in 1729, yet important to a broader
context of American history in that it is based in one of the few remaining American model manufacturing communities developed at the start of the 20th century. The museum is open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
