Expo To Offer Youths Venue To Show, Sell Livestock Like it has with so many other events, the coronavirus has disrupted fair season. For some people, that simply means fewer milkshakes consumed or carnival games enjoyed. However, for the youths who raise animals to exhibit and subsequently sell, the cancellation of fairs means a significant loss of income. “Most of the livestock had been bought before COVID. These kids have all this money wrapped up in these animals,” said cattleman Jevin Kready, who noted that because specific finish weights are required, livestock must be sold within the timeframes set at the time of purchase. The Kready family has years of experience in raising, showing, and selling livestock. As a 4-H and FFA member, Jevin began showing beef cattle in middle school, occasionally raising some pigs as well, and he has been in charge of the livestock show at the Manheim Farm Show for a number of years. Jevin’s wife, Courtney, currently shows animals at local fairs, and their oldest child, Waylon, first entered the show ring at age 5. Waylon, who will turn 8 this month, has exhibited goats and pigs, and he wants to add a steer next year. Jevin and a friend, sheep exhibitor Adam Zurin, had joked about hosting a livestock show, but when the Elizabethtown Fair was canceled, they got serious. Jevin, Adam, and about five other people created Old Line Youth Livestock Expo, named for the road the Kreadys’ back driveway meets. The Kreadys’ farm was an ideal place to host the event as they built a barn over the winter and had not yet filled it. Following the Elizabethtown Fair exhibition guidelines, only youths living in Columbia, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Manheim Central, Middletown, Lower Dauphin, Hershey, and Palmyra school districts will be

ATTENTION BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA SUFFERERS! BACK BY REQUEST... Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. HERE AT MADDEN PHYSICAL THERAPY IN LOWER PAXTON ON:
Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin, or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) - the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you. “When I came to Madden I had pain walking, sitting, standing, getting in and out of bed. I could not wash my feet or put on socks. Getting in and out of a car was very painful. I could not drive my motor home long distances. Since my excellent care at Madden, I now live a pain free life.” - Bob O.
Wednesday, September 2nd at 7:00 PM How do I register for the Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop?
Hello, back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life... I’ve seen it many times.
Call our office to register at 717-210-9945 Ask for Heather... There are only 15 seats available...
• It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)... • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life... like spending time with your children or grandchildren. • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do... • It can ruin your travel plans...
• And it can take away your ability to live life... having to rely on others... or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting... not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems... and life problems. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people from right here in Harrisburg... and the rest of Dauphin County... who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica... it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physcial Therapy in Lower Paxton on Wednesday, September 2nd at 7pm. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing... • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica. • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money). • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg... • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. How much is it to attend? The event is FREE. No cost to you...
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Chad Madden

Hi, everyone! I hope you all are doing well and enjoying life to its fullest. I know I am taking more time lately to appreciate the beauty in the world. That’s a choice that I have finally decided to strive for, instead of dwelling on all the unpleasantness that we get bombarded with on the news daily. Make a pact with yourself to look through all the bad in the world and look for the good … I promise you will see it if you try! This next piece is dedicated to the memory of my husband’s grandfather, whom we all affectionately called Poppy. This Earth was blessed with the presence of Ernest Minnich for 97 years until he went home to be with Jesus on July 21. Now we will cherish all the memories we have of Poppy from the “stinkybologna” trips up north to the “snifters” to eating at the “pig house” to Saturdays listening to Lawrence Welk to just sitting and listening to his stories from the good old days. We will miss you, Poppy, but we know you are cradled in the love of God’s hands now and we’ll see you again someday. Grandpa’s Hands Grandpa, some 90-plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. He didn’t move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him, he didn’t acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if he was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. “Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking,” he said in a clear, strong voice. “I didn’t mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,” I explained to him. “Have you ever looked at your hands?” he asked. “I mean really looked at your hands?” I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making. Grandpa smiled and related this story: “Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled, and weak, have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer.
They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They dried the tears of my children and caressed the love of my life. They held my rifle and wiped my tears when I went off to war. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. “They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn daughter. Decorated with my wedding band, they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote the letters home and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and walked my daughter down the aisle. Yet, they were strong and sure when I dug my buddy out of a foxhole and lifted a plow off of my best friend’s foot. They have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn’t understand. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. “They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. “These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ.” I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandpa’s hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the faces of my children, grandchildren, and spouse, I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face. Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Ed Port of Royalton! Recipe of the Week Slow Cooker Chicken Wings (Great slow-cooker meal to keep your kitchen cool during these hot summer days!) Ingredients: 1/2 cup soy sauce 8-ounce Coca-Cola (Use regular Coke because Diet Coke does not have real sugar in it) About two dozen chicken wings Directions: 1. Pour 1/2 cup of soy sauce and 8 ounces of Coca-Cola with about a dozen chicken drumsticks in the good old trusty slow cooker and set it on low for 6 hours. 2. Drain all of the liquid from the slow cooker into a sauce pan. Cook over medium heat to reduce the liquid enough so that it forms a nice glaze. You’ll want to reduce it until the liquid is considerably thicker than when you removed it from the slow cooker. See Chatter pg 3

eligible to participate in the Old Line Youth Livestock Expo. Market steers and dairy beef cattle will be judged on Saturday, Aug. 22; market goats and market lambs on Sunday, Aug. 23; and market hogs on Monday, Aug. 24. The event will be closed to spectators. Only exhibitors and parents or guardians will be allowed to attend. “We will be able to do social distancing because we’re just having animals, Jevin said. “We won’t have livestock here overnight (for exhibitors to attend to). The public is encouraged to participate in the auction of animals, however. The sale will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 24 by Hess Auction Group, 1667 Cider Press Road, Manheim. Bidder registration will begin at 5 p.m. A stand will sell food and beverages, with proceeds benefitting the Mastersonville Fire Company. Auction attendees should be prepared to follow safety guidelines, including wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Online bidding will be offered at www.hessauctiongroup.hibid.com beginning the week before the auction. Jevin noted that just as with many local fair auctions, a buyback option will be available for buyers who choose to send their purchases to market, and butcher shops
are lined up for those who would like to keep the meat or donate it to a local food bank. “We are very thankful for the businesses that have stepped up, Jevin said, adding that more than 50 have contributed to the production of the expo. That has made it possible to purchase insurance, pay judges, and create prizes. Additional sponsorships are available, and businesses are welcome to participate in the auction. For sponsorship information, readers may email Greg Musser at oldline youthexpo@gmail.com. Does Jevin see the expo becoming an annual event? “Oh, I hope not, he said. Old Line Youth Livestock Expo has received its official nonprofit status, and Jevin hopes to keep the organization going, but not in place of local fairs. This year’s event is just to meet an immediate need. “I like helping the kids out, and I want events for the kids. If ever there’s a tough time, we can do fundraisers to help. We can possibly provide seed money for projects, he said. “If we get more money, we will give more money out. It’ll go back to the kids. For more information about the Old Line Youth Livestock Expo, readers may visit www.facebook.com/OldLine YouthExpo.

With the safety of patrons, employees, vendors and partici-

A “Safety Care” booklet defining the safety protocols will be posted at www.parenfaire.com to help guests prepare for their visit. With capacity restrictions limiting daily attendance to a fraction of recent audiences, guests entering the front gates to this unique season will enjoy an experience similar to those of the early Faire years. Attendance will be set to the mandate to encourage social distancing and provide a safe experience for everyone. All tickets for the 2020 Faire season must be purchased in advance and will be for specific dates. No day-of gate tickets will be sold. Patrons who previously purchased 2020 Faire tickets must exchange them for the date-specific tickets through the designated box office form. The Faire will continue its dog-
friendly status throughout the season with a special dog ticket available for advance purchase following receipt of necessary online forms and waivers. As always, service dogs, as defined by the ADA, are welcome without advance arrangements. To best prepare for the approaching Faire season and, under the governor’s new directives of July 16, it is necessary to cancel the 2020 dates for Flavorfest, the PA Brewer’s Festival and Celtic Fling. Wineries, breweries, craft vendors and performers are unable to participate because of restrictions prohibiting sampling, lack of staff and product, and the inability to reach the festival site due to travel restrictions. Guests who purchased or exchanged tickets for the canceled events can request a refund or an exchange of their event tickets for a 2020 date-specific Faire reservation ticket at w w w. p a r e n f a i r e . c o m / b u y tickets.html. The deadline for requests is Monday, Aug. 31. Mount Hope Estate & Winery, home of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, is located on Route 72, a half-mile south of Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 266.

The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company. A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at self-checkout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August. In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced on July 20 that it is receiving a donation of $125,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. Since March, demand for the food bank’s services has increased more than 40% as families face financial uncertainty in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network,
is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Made-to-Share, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint.
