Golf Event To Aid Hershey High Alumnus ershey High School’s Class of 1979 will hold a fundraiser golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Deer Valley Golf Course, 101 Stoudt Road, Hummelstown. Funds raised will help to offset the health care costs faced by a 1981 alumnus who is battling multiple serious health issues. The tournament is the brainchild
medical expenses. Bruce Cary, committee chairman, noted the goal is to raise $12,000, and the group is well on its way with multiple registrants and sponsors. A registration fee to be a golfer includes 18 holes, use of a cart, lunch, a goodie bag, and chances at prizes for a hole in one, longest drive, and closest-to-the-pin.
Non-golfers are welcome to join alumni for lunch by Lisa’s Café. The cost for lunch will go toward additional alumni facing health concerns and medical costs. Space is still available for individual golfers or teams, and participants do not need to be Hershey alumni. To register before Friday, Sept. 10, visit www.anothershot79.com.

Medal Of Honor Recipient To Speak The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its next monthly meeting online via Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Hershel “Woody” Williams, known as the only living World War II Medal of Honor recipient. After enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve, Williams received training as a demolition man with a focus on the use of flamethrowers.
He earned his Medal of Honor in February 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Covered by only four riflemen, all of whom became casualties, Williams engaged the opposition for four hours under terrific fire, singlehandedly destroying several Japanese reinforced concrete pillboxes with his flamethrower. His actions allowed American tanks to open a lane for infantry. Williams continued

Outside a nonprofit in Elizabethtown, a field of dahlias is raising hope. The flowers are handpicked by volunteers and sold throughout the summer to raise money for Brittany’s Hope. It’s just one way the organization supports its mission of creating lasting change in the lives of orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope was named for Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany was one of 12 adopted children and three biological children of the Abel family, who created the organization to spotlight vulnerable children around the world. “My parents would travel to other countries and realized there are so many special needs children who are left behind in orphanages,” said Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope. “They were essentially being warehoused, with little caregiving.” Brittany’s Hope specializes in helping special needs children, which Sahd explained could include a

child with physical or developmental delays as well as hardto-place older children or children with siblings who want to be adopted together. Sahd was adopted from Vietnam at age 9 and often accompanied her parents on trips to the country, where she served as an interpreter. “I’ve been involved in the work of Brittany’s Hope since I was 15 years old,” she said, noting that the organization has two pathways of support. Brittany’s Hope works with adoption agencies to provide adoption grants and provides humanitarian aid in Vietnam, Ethiopia and Kenya. “We do amazing work, but of course I am biased,” Sahd stated. “But especially in this past year, when more children have been at risk due to the
pandemic and economic downturn, our mission is needed more than ever.” The heartbeat of Brittany’s Hope is its volunteers, Sahd remarked, including the people who cut and sell the dahlias, as well as volunteers who help the organization with other fundraising events such as its upcoming Brittany’s Ball on Saturday, Sept. 11. “This will be our second gala, and we’re very excited,” she said. “Last year’s gala was a lifeline of support for orphaned and at-risk children, and we hope to meet their needs once again this year.” Thanks to a corporate partner who covers overhead expenses for the nonprofit, 100% of donations directly benefit children, Sahd noted. “We’re supporting children
The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will offer a networking gathering for folk and traditional artists living and practicing in Cumberland, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey. The Folk Artists Gathering is intended for any artist working to sustain or advance an artistic tradition shaped and handed down within families, neighborhoods, and communi-
ties. Attendees may be those who play traditional music, sing in a church choir, make quilts, paint murals, tell stories or write poetry, cook recipes handed down from their grandparents, or perform dances specific to their culture. The purpose of the gathering is for artists to meet each other, share resources and ideas, and talk about how the Susquehanna Folk Music Society might support them in the future. AACA Receives 4-Star Rating
SMALL BAPTIST CHURCH looking for INSTRUMENTALIST/WORSHIP LEADER for Sunday morning worship. Compensation determined by skill, experience & personality. Call 717-944-9651
The AACA Museum Inc. has announced that it earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator (CN), an independent charity evaluator. The 4-star rating is the highest rating awarded by CN. This is the third consecutive time that the museum, 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, has earned this honor. The AACA Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, displays restored or preserved vehicles in lifelike settings representing the 1890s to the 1980s. The 4-star rating indicates the museum’s financial responsibility as an ethical charity, and it underscores AACA’s commitment to transparency with donors and stakeholders. Since 2002, using objective analysis, CN has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating, a distinction earned by only 25% of the charities rated by the organization. For current program information and to plan a visit, go to www.aacamuseum.org.

tion team, including producer Janet Bixler, director Chris Krahulec, stage manager Carol McDonough, music director Ellen Carnahan and composer Chris Purcell. The play includes an eclectic range of compositions by Purcell, Dlugolecki’s longtime musical partner.
While Shallus is the play’s inspiration, “The Hand That Holds the Quill” focuses on the women connected to him and their role and influence during the time that he penned the Constitution. The play also recognizes the wives of delegates who framed the Constitution and African Americans of the AME Church who were advocating for the abolition of slav-
ery and literacy for the black community. Dlugolecki’s credits include 17 plays of various lengths, mostly produced in central Pennsylvania theaters. Her works have earned national recognition. She holds a master’s degree in creative writing from Wilkes University. Tickets may be purchased at https://givebutter.com/Quill.
