Hi, everyone! Here we are in the final weeks of the summer. Even though there wasn’t as much to do this summer because of the ongoing pandemic restrictions, the season still flew by pretty fast, don’t you agree? It feels like it was just June last week. Oh well, I am ready for some cooler crisper air anyhow. Heaven & Hell A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, “Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.” The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, “You have seen Hell.”

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, “I don’t understand.” “It is simple” said the Lord, “it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.”

Troop 97 from pg 1 Mason has attended regular troop meetings and has gone on troop camping trips including Jamboree On The Air (JOTA), Klondike, and Wizard Safari. His community service activities include collecting donations in Scouting for Food, serving at the Londonderry Fire Company’s fish fry, rolling eggs for Geyers United Methodist Church (UMC) Easter eggs, running games for vacation Bible school at Geyers UMC, volunteering as an accident victim for the Harrisburg International Airport’s Disaster Days training drill, dressing in costume to hand out candy during the Geyers UMC annual Trunk or Treat, and helping fellow Scouts work on their own Eagle Scout Projects. Mason was elected as the senior patrol leader for Troop 97, the highest youth position in a BSA troop. As the current troop guide, Mason uses the EDGE formula regularly to assist young Scouts in learning new Scout skills. He is the son of Ed and Jamie Barrick of Middletown. Brayden has participated in weekly troop meetings and trips, his favorite being Eastern State Penitentiary and the USS New Jersey. With the troop, he also
visited the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; Dover International Speedway; Gifford Pinchot State Park; and the battlefields of Gettysburg. He participated in a week of summer camp at Trexler Scout Reservation. Thus far, Brayden has earned 29 merit badges, including nine required for the Eagle Scout rank. In 2019, he was elected as senior patrol leader. In this role, he was charged with planning weekly meetings, assigning duties to junior leaders, and setting a good example to all Scouts. Brayden was also tasked with presiding over the yearly planning meeting during which the Scouts discussed and voted on what activities the troop would attend in the coming year. He has used the EDGE method to teach younger Scouts knots. Brayden volunteered at the Londonderry Fire Company’s fish fry, sang with his troop at the Middletown Home Christmas show, collected donated goods during the yearly Scouting for Food, and serves regularly at his church, Evangelical United Methodist Church. Luke attends weekly troop meetings as well as campouts,
which have included the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center and a week at Trexler Scout Reservation. His favorite trip to date was a weekend at the United States Naval Academy. The troop enjoyed overnight camping, presentation of the cadets, and a football game. Thus far, Luke has completed 29 merit badges, including 11 of the designated 13 Eagle Scout merit badges. He has helped with Easter egg making and the Easter egg hunt at Geyers UMC. At the annual Londonderry Fire Company fish fry and the 193 Airwing Ceremony, Luke has served meals, bused tables, refilled beverages, and washed dishes. He exceeded the required six hours of community service needed for the rank of Life Scout. Luke was elected troop guide, an experienced Scout who leads the newest Scouts of the troop through their first year. He guided the younger Scouts in troop operations. He is the son of Laura Spangenberg of Hummelstown. Troop 97 is sponsored by the Londonderry Fire Company. For more information, readers may contact Ted Pauley at tszm@hotmail.com.

Matthew Dalkiewicz, a seventh-grader at Hershey Middle School, was recently honored for achieving an exceptional score on the SAT, the same test taken by college-bound high school students. Matthew took this test as a participant in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Each year, Duke TIP identifies a select group of students as academically gifted, based on their standardized test scores. Those students are invited to take the ACT or SAT, which can provide insight into a gifted student’s strengths and abilities. The highest scorers among these students are invited to a special recognition ceremony,

t n e v E
FRIDAY, OCT. 16 11 A.M. TO 1 P.M.
Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown
Friends, I did not want to forgo honoring the veterans who gave so freely and sacrificed the most. However, out of concern for the safety of the 106th District’s veterans and the staff of the Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department, Fire Police and Auxiliary, the annual Veterans Breakfast will not be held this year. It was impossible to hold the typical event and abide by Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines on how to limit the spread of COVID-19. Instead, I will be holding a drive-through Tribute to Veterans Event. A bagged lunch and commemorative pin will be presented to each veteran who registers. This event is my small way of acknowledging and honoring their service and sacrifices made to our country.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please call my office at 717-534-1323 to confirm your attendance and sandwich selection. State-related publications will be distributed at this event.

The program is designed to provide additional support to community partners focused on eliminating hunger, changing children’s lives and healing the planet. The Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, has announced its fall Theatre Academy session with an in-person acting class for students in grades one through three and a junior musical, “We are Monsters,” for students in grades four through 12. Participants in first through third grades will meet at the Playhouse starting on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 to 10:30 am. “Acting Out Your Story” will be the theme of the eight-week session, including interactive drama games and exercises. Masks are required. Families will be required to sign a waiver regarding COVID-19. When the children are safely six feet apart on stage, they may remove their masks to share their expressions and gestures. Should the state
mandates change, the Playhouse will do its best to adhere to those guidelines for safety. If those mandates restrict in-person classes, the session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. A fee has been set for the class. Youths in grades four through 12 will have the opportunity to audition for “We Are Monsters.” Music, choreography and character development are part of this 60-minute show. As co-directors, Laurie Petersen and Rebecca Wolf will hold rehearsals both virtually and at the Playhouse, on the stage or outside, weather permitting, beginning on Sept. 2. Auditions must be recorded and sent to the directors for review. Students should include 32 measures of a song and a short monologue in their video
from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Playhouse, with calls for small groups at select times. For safety, masks are required. Students will be placed six feet apart on stage. If the current health situation in Pennsylvania requires more restrictions, “We Are Monsters” can easily be livestreamed or moved to a virtual platform. Signing a waiver regarding COVID-19 will be required to participate. To register, readers may visit www.hersheyareaplayhouse.com. Questions regarding the class for students in grades one to three may be directed to Jill Panyard at jillpanyard@gmail.com. For information concerning the junior musical, readers may contact Petersen at the aforementioned email address.
