AACA Library To Host Music & Motors Event BY FRANCINE FULTON

usic & Motors, which will feature live music and a cruise-in, will be presented by the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Library and Research Center on Saturday, Sept. 11, from noon to 5 p.m. Activities will take place at the new AACA Library and Research Center building at 800 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey. Ticket holders will be able to listen to live local bands in concert, including Observe the 93rd, Hot and Dangerous, Lives Lost, Cody Kilburn and the Ben Ginder Group. The bands will perform on a stage set up at the site, with professional sound provided by Hershey AV Solutions. The day will also include food trucks and craft vendors, and attendees will have a chance to win prizes, including gift baskets and gift cards to local restaurants and hair salons.

M

Local vehicle owners are encouraged to participate in the cruise-in. “ We (welcome) hot rods motorcycles, sports cars and muscle cars,” said Tanis Pellegrini, library assistant and event organizer. “This is not an AACAsanctioned event. It’s a way for people to show their cars and enjoy the music.” Preregistration for the cruise-in is encouraged; space will be limited. Those who register in advance will receive a discount. For more information or to register, visit www.aacalibrary.org/music-motors. Pellegrini explained that the Library and Research Center was previously located on West Governor Road in Hershey. Beginning in October 2020, the contents of the library as well as the display cars had to be moved to the new location. “When we moved into the building, it was completely gutted and renovated,” he noted. “ We knocked out walls, so it looks much more open.”

In addition to books and documentation, the AACA Library and Research Center houses a number of display cars.

The building is currently not open to the public, but small groups have been allowed to visit. A grand opening ceremony is planned for October. Currently, the library includes nearly 2 million pieces of sales literature, photographs and owner’s manuals and more than 6,500 reference books. “We have books dating back to the 1880s - the early years of cars,” Pellegrini stated. “We are America’s automotive library.” The Comuta-Car will be on display at the Music & Motors event.

almost 30 years. Throughout the organization’s six countries of service, volunteers complete a variety of infrastructure projects, life skills trainings, and Bible teaching sessions in support of missionary work targeting unreached people groups. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, travel bans, and social distancing requirements, many of these trips were canceled in 2020 and 2021. However, FIA has adapted its operations so local volunteers can continue their international mission efforts.

Brian Peffley, a culinary arts instructor at Lebanon County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), has won the Outstanding Career and Technical Educator award for student development and program leadership. This Educator of the Year award is one of SkillsUSA’s highest national recognitions and is awarded to individuals who guide SkillsUSA members in becoming leaders in their chosen fields. The award is offered only when the SkillsUSA board of directors wants to honor an educator for dedication to career and technical education and to SkillsUSA. Peffley has been a pastry arts instructor at the LCCTC for 25 years and a

SkillsUSA adviser for 24 of those years. He has coached many students to compete in the SkillsUSA Championships in commercial baking, restaurant service, and more. Peffley has worked with the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC), presently serving as the ACFEFAC secondary chair. He also received the first ACFEFAC secondary accredited baking pastry program certification in the country. The display cars include an 1895 Duryea Replica, which is featured on the Library and Research Center logo; a 1909 Studebaker Electric Suburban Stanhope; a 1908 Oldsmobile Limited Prototype; and a Comuta-Car. “The ComutaCar was an electric car manufactured in the late 1970s and early ‘80s based off of a golf cart design in response to the oil crisis of the ‘70s and America’s need for a green energy car,” Pellegrini explained. Pellegrini hopes the upcoming event will attract both car enthusiasts and new visitors. “We’re hoping

people come out and get a renewed interest in our automotive history,” he stated. “I don’t think the average person realizes how important automotive history is to America.” Pellegrini, who is a member of Lives Lost, an alternative rock band, came up with the concept of Music & Motors, which he said was wholeheartedly supported by the library staff members. “It combines my hobby with my professional life,” he said. Embracing technology options, Friends In Action field leaders and volunteers have used phone calls, texts, and Zoom meetings to continue to connect with indigenous people abroad. “Even in very remote locations, we can FaceTime or speak with national partners and missionaries in real time. Thankfully, we have been able to sustain impacts and service in all locations,” said executive director Tim Johnston. Mike Butler, Friends In Action’s field leader to Papua New Guinea, was able to teach a missionary how to repair a generator through email exchanges. While solar power provides an energy source, frequent cloudy days can leave missionaries without enough power to charge computers, lights, or fans. A generator provides an additional power source and also enables missionaries to run power tools used to repair damage caused by termites and mold. Bolivian national pastors use WhatsApp to communicate with FIA staff and volunteers. COVID-19 has created significant needs for relief aid such as medication and food in villages along the Amazon River. “Being able to speak directly to national leaders on the frontlines has been instrumental in getting critical supplies to the most desperate villagers,” shared Gary Ferch, FIA’s field leader to Bolivia. Cellphone reception in some areas has allowed staff and volunteers to speak with or text national leaders in Nicaragua working on community transformation projects

among the Rama Cay people. “The villagers learned construction skills taught by past volunteer teams, so these check-in conversations ensure that they have the knowledge and supplies necessary to continue building,” reported Johnston. The villagers completed three hurricane-resistant homes independently in 2020, and they have four more houses started this year. Friends In Action has also created stateside and local opportunities for volunteers to continue with hands-on projects. A volunteer team recently returned from the campus of Ethnos360, a missionary training facility in Missouri. In less than a week, the team completed a full kitchen installation, repaired a well house, installed soffit vents and adjusted ridge roofing vents, trimmed out two bathrooms, installed fiberglass paneling, and renovated multiple student rooms. FIA has an additional trip planned to continue these efforts from Sunday to Saturday, Sept. 12 to 18. Volunteers have also served through various projects offered at FIA’s Middletown headquarters. Tradespeople have recently been making repairs on a barn located on the grounds, installing an entrance sign at the front of the property, repainting exterior doors, performing mechanical work, and trimming trees. To express interest in volunteering with FIA, contact Paul Brosey at PaulBrosey@ fiaintl.org or calling 717546-0208.

CATRA Hires New Executive Director

Mid Penn Bank Donates To First Responders Mid Penn Bank recently presented a total of $24,000 to more than 100 first responder organizations in Pennsylvania through the bank’s First Responders Donation Program. The donations were made through Mid Penn Bank and Scottdale Bank & Trust, a division of Mid Penn Bank, located in western Pennsylvania. Among the recipients were South Central EMS in Harrisburg, which received a $1,000 donation, and Middletown Volunteer Fire Department, which received a $600 donation.

The First Responders Donation Program was instituted by the bank years ago to thank the fire companies, ambulance associations and other organizations that protect and serve the local community. The program rewards Mid Penn Bank first responder customers with donations that support the delivery of critical emergency services. Mid Penn Bank is committed to supporting charitable organizations through corporate donations, employee volunteerism and fundraising. The First Responders Donation

CATRA’s new executive director, Theresa Moccio (right), meets Adam, a participant in the therapeutic riding program.

Program demonstrates just a portion of the total $1.59 million in charitable dollars that Mid Penn Bank distributes to its communities each year. Mid Penn regularly contributes to various causes, including health and human services, community improvement and education. To learn more about Mid Penn Bank, visit www.mid pennbank.com.

based Alternative HR to oversee the recruiting and hiring process. Sixteen applications were received, and Alternative HR conducted phone interviews and narrowed the candidates to three. Under the guidance of Alternative HR, CATRA formed a four-person search committee that conducted interviews, and two candidates were invited to tour the farm, watch lessons and meet with board members. Moccio has worked with nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire, the Monadnock Humane Society in New Hampshire, the American Red Cross and Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, for more than 20 years. CATRA’s mission is to provide “quality equine and animal-assisted therapeutic programs to the people of the capital area.” CATRA’s vision is “to be a center of excellence where equines and other animals enrich the lives of people of all abilities to enhance physical, spiritual, intellectual, mental, emotional and social well-being through a holistic approach.”

Theresa Moccio (right) helps with Adam’s riding lesson on Dale the pony. Lindsey, a CATRA volunteer and Adam’s mother, leads Dale.

Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association Inc. (CATRA) has announced the hiring of Theresa Moccio, formerly of New Hampshire, as its executive director. Her first day was July 26. As executive director, Moccio will oversee and be responsible for all of CATRA’s operations and programs. Students Receive White Coats Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine held its 12th annual white coat ceremony on Aug. 7 at the Pavilion at Montage Mountain. Participating students included Catherine Jones of Hershey, Jaeger Kubikisha of Hershey and Jeffrey Mun of Hummelstown. During the ceremony, the 115 members of the Class of 2025 recited an oath acknowledging

their responsibilities as future physicians and their obligations to future patients. Then they received their white coats, the first symbol of their new profession. The coats were provided by The Stanley J. Dudrick, M.D., and Alan G. Goldstein Endowed Fund. Medical schools across the U.S. hold white coat ceremonies to welcome new medical students into the profession.
