Determined To Give Back Walk Of Love Cross Country 5K Set For Sept. 14 By Chelsea Peifer
In lieu of a sweet 16th birthday celebration a few years ago, Sayali Yoder opted to invite friends and family to join her in participating in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love
Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk. Sayali’s parents received one of the very first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit committed to aiding orphans in crisis around the world. Born without hands and feet, Sayali went through more than 26 surgeries and lived in an orphanage until being adopted at age 3. Today, she is determined to give back to the organization that she says helped her to

become who she is. Sayali faithfully trained for the 5K by taking daily walks with her boxer, Athena, and set a fundraising goal of $1,000 - only to surpass that goal by raising more than $5,000. The race itself proved to be a challenge, as her prostheses are not designed for far distances or bumpy terrain, but she crossed the finish line. Now a college sophomore majoring in video production, Sayali plans to once again participate in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and raise funds to help children in need. This year’s Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The familyfriendly event will include a 5K, a fun walk, pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course for children, games and activities, giveaways, and food. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, encourages people to join Sayali at the event or to consider supporting her cause if they are unable to participate or attend. The organization has set a fundraising goal of $75,000 for this year’s event, the 15th annual. Through adoption grants, Brittany’s Hope has united more than 1,300 children with special needs into forever families by adoption. Sahd said that the organization also actively cares for and has educated more

Tournament To Fund Hope Within’s New Dental Clinic Hope Within Ministries, a free primary care medical clinic located at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown, focuses on providing health care coverage for people who may otherwise fall between the cracks in the health care system. “A lot of people think that it’s the poorest of the poor that we see, but it’s not,” explained Anne Marie McAlester, Hope Within chief operating officer. “We serve those who are the ‘working poor,’ those who are working multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet but yet they make too much to qualify for medical assistance and not enough to afford health insurance.” Oftentimes, Hope Within patients are working multiple part-time jobs and trying to piece everything together, or they are even full-time employees struggling to make ends meet, said McAlester. “It’s a misconception that everybody has health insurance. A big piece of the population has gone uninsured.” Residents of Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties who are medically uninsured and fall under 250% of the federal poverty level are eligible for treatment at Hope Within. According to McAlester, Hope Within has approximately 350 active patients and has seen 64 new patients so far in 2019. Eight medical providers volunteer their services at Hope Within, and McAlester added that more volunteers are always welcome. Hope Within also partners with the central Pennsylvania ministry “She’s Somebody’s Daughter” to treat individuals who
have been ensnared in trafficking or by other brands of the sex trade. “These girls are fragile, and they are treated with respect and with dignity, quite possibly for the first time ever,” McAlester said. An approximately 1,900-square-foot addition to Hope Within’s primary care center was completed this summer to house its new lost-cost counseling wing. Counseling services were previously offered out of only one room, but McAlester explained that the expansion includes three counseling rooms. Counseling services are available to anyone on an income-based sliding scale fee. The room formerly used for counseling services will soon be converted into a dental suite, so that Hope Within can begin implementing a donation-based dental clinic in 2020. McAlester said that plans are also underway for a greater dental expansion later that year, with Hope Within aiming to begin providing dental services in space at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, by the end of 2020. “That’s still a long way off for patients to wait. We’ve had lots of calls (requesting dental care) already, so we want to provide something in the interim,” McAlester remarked. Dentists who will volunteer their services are needed. Proceeds from the annual Golf for Hope tournament will go toward furnishing the new dental clinic. The community is invited to take part in the Golf for Hope tournament on Friday, Sept. 27, at Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown. The tournament will feature a four-person scramble format. Registration will open

PSECU Supports Hunger Action Month September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and encourage action to help end hunger. During the month, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is partnering with its Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor, PSECU, to host events, awards, and a virtual food drive initiative to highlight the issue of hunger in the area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate. In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action Day breakfasts in the

food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Members of the community are invited to register to attend the free events at www.centralpafood bank.org/ham. To help bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, the CPFB has asked community leaders to be “celebrity volunteers” and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September. These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others. During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual
food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.cen tralpafoodbank.org/psecu. In addition to virtual food drive donation matching in September, PSECU will provide the CPFB with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing its combined contribution to a potential $20,000. According to CPFB, each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation could provide up to 120,000
meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. To learn more about hunger and Hunger Action Month events, activities, and ways to get involved, readers may visit www.central pafoodbank.org/ham. Faithful volunteers: That’s one of the things that Elizabethtown Fair president Kenneth Myer credited for the ongoing success of the Elizabethtown Fair during his opening speech at the 46th annual fair on Aug. 19. “Nobody here gets paid a nickel. This is all volunteerism,” noted Myer, thanking the hundreds of volunteers who make the tradition possible through their generosity. Thick humidity and heat advisories on opening day did not stop people from turning out in droves to enjoy the fair, which continued through Aug. 24 and marked the official start of fair season in Lancaster County. In conjunction with opening night, the 2019 Elizabethtown Fair Queen Scholarship Competition took place on the Kiwanis Stage with Galla, of husband-and-wife musical duo Dan & Galla, serving as the master of ceremonies. Friends in Action (FIA), headquartered in Middletown, recently sent local volunteers on shortterm mission trips to Nicaragua. FIA has been assisting the Rama Cay people, known as the last indigenous people group in Nicaragua, for more than a dozen years. Many volunteers return year after year. Using community transformation projects as a platform to share the Gospel, local volunteers have an opportunity to take an active role in the Great Commission by teaching biblical and life skills or completing construction projects. This summer, more than 20 congregants from Lebanon Valley Bible Church and Community Bible Church in Marietta hosted Bible training sessions for more than 100 Rama adults and children. FIA’s strategy is to teach the entire Bible chronologically to the people while also progressing on a cohesive community development plan. Additionally, seven motherdaughter or grandmother-daughter

pairs hosted a vacation Bible school for more than 60 of the Rama children. The visiting teams led older Rama children through Bible stories about John the Baptist and the start of Jesus’ ministry, while younger children learned about the seven days of Creation. Volunteers reported that the children asked questions, completed crafts, played competitive games, sang Bible songs, and gave plenty of hugs. They also received candy treats, which they called sugar plums regardless of the variety. Linda Esbenshade shared that she and her granddaughter Anya were impacted by the friendliness of the people. FIA also recently drilled a well and constructed a laundry/shower house for the Rama Cay people. experiences, team-building experiences, and outreach. One of the goals of K-Teams is to provide opportunities for youths to lead activities that build community and evidence the love of Christ. Participants from the Kalona group, which goes by Mennonite Youth Fellowship, began each day through group Bible study at nearby Camp Barachel, where they stayed, and traveled into the city to spend four hours each day helping to lead a summer program at the South Sixth Street Park. This was the first time that EMM has offered a K-Team experience in Lebanon. Integral to making this connection was Michael Clancy, who serves as an EMM worker in Lebanon and pastors an LMC (formerly Lancaster Mennonite Conference) congregation called Freedom in Christ Fellowship in the city. As K-Team director Krista Martin was responding to a list of churches interested in participating in the program, she began exploring an invitation that Clancy had posed for the program to work in his city. Clancy connected EMM with Sheena Stoner, who helps to coordinate a number of groups that lead various weeks of a summer camp program at the South Sixth Street Park. The purpose of the camp, which began in the 1940s, is to provide a safe environment for children during the summer. The camp is free to children ages 6 to 12, with a daily lunch provided by the Lebanon School District at no cost to the attendees. A number of local churches and organizations provide programming for different weeks of the camp. EMM K-Teams led two weeks during this summer - one with the Kalona youth group and another with the K-Team summer staff. During the Kalona group’s week, about 30 to 40 community children were engaged with the program.

After traveling more than 900 miles, the youth group from Kalona Mennonite Church in Iowa arrived in Lebanon on July 28 to participate in a weeklong Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) Kingdom Team (K-Team) experience. The group set the record for the farthest distance traveled to take part in a K-Team experience. EMM K-Teams are focused on a balanced approach to discipleship and outreach. Through interactive and engaging discipleship sessions, the K-Team participants have the opportunity to learn and grow together as a group and individually in their journeys with Christ. In addition to the discipleship sessions, participants engage in prayer walks, cultural learning
