SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
Hope Springs Farm Expands Programming Safety precautions that will continue include requiring all staff members to wear masks and conduct COVID-19 screenings each day and asking the growers to wear masks while acknowledging that some of them are unable to do so. The farm asks families and residential staff to prescreen participants before sending them to the farm, and growers are screened again when they arrive. Growers and staff members wash their hands often and social distance whenever possible. Each group of growers has its own designated indoor space for rests between activities. Participants continue to refrain from going on community outings
from the farm. Opened in 2005, Hope Springs Farm aims to provide a day program that allows participants to maximize their abilities. More than 50 adults are usually enrolled in the program. Growers’ activities include feeding and cleaning the animals on the farm, which normally operates at full capacity with alpacas, chickens, sheep, horses, goats, and pigs. Growers also plant and water gardens, make crafts, take classes, and harvest flowers and vegetables. Prior to the pandemic, they volunteered for programs in the community such as Meals on Wheels, the Humane Society, and food banks.

Speaker To Discuss Chinese Medicine The Department of Humanities at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine will welcome Linda L. Barnes, Ph.D., M.T.S., M.A., as its grand rounds guest lecturer for the second annual Germano Lecture in Complementary Medicine. Barnes will present “The Americanizing of Chi-
nese Medicine and Healing” on Friday, Oct. 2, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Barnes will assert that the Americanizing of the different practices that make up Chinese medicine traditions cannot be fully understood without attention to the full range of Americans who have
engaged in the process. In particular, the presentation will look at the role of underrepresented minorities that have played a part in the adoption, expansion and, ultimately, Americanization of the related practices throughout the country’s history and in all its regions.
The lecture is free and open to the public. No preregistration is required. For more information and to receive the Zoom link via email, readers may contact Lori Ricard at lricard@pennstatehealth.psu .edu or Deb Tomazin at dtomazin@pennstate health.psu.edu.

Hi, everyone! Here we are in September! In my eyes, when August is over, that means summer is over. (Boo hoo hoo hoo!) And when September gets here, that means it is fall! Time for pumpkin spice everything! (Again, boo hoo hoo hoo!) OK, not really. I really do love the fall months too. I love the crisper air and being able to sit by a campfire without being eaten alive by mosquitoes. And I have some really cute hoodies and boots! So, the first week or so of September is bittersweet to me. Goodbye, summer, see you next year! The Heart
“Tomorrow morning,” the surgeon began, “I’ll open up your heart...” “You’ll find Jesus there,” the boy interrupted. The surgeon looked up, annoyed. “I’ll cut your heart open,” he continued, “to see how much damage has been done...” “But when you open up my heart, you’ll find Jesus in there,” said the boy. The surgeon looked to the parents, who sat quietly. “When I see how much damage has been done, I’ll sew your heart and chest back up, and I’ll plan what to do next.” “But you’ll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You’ll find Him in my heart.” The surgeon had had enough. “I’ll tell you what I’ll find in your heart. I’ll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels. And I’ll find out if I can make you well.” “You’ll find Jesus there too.
He lives there.” The surgeon left. The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery, “...damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy: painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis...” Here he paused. “Death within one year.” He stopped the recorder, but there was more to be said. “Why?” he asked aloud. “Why did You do this? You’ve put him here, You’ve put him in this pain, and You’ve cursed him to an early death. Why?” The Lord answered and said, “The boy, My lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain and will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow.” The surgeon’s tears were hot, but his anger was hotter. “You created that boy, and You created that heart. He’ll be dead in months. Why?” The Lord answered, “The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for He has done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb.” The surgeon wept. After the surgery, the surgeon sat beside the boy’s bed; the boy’s parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and whispered, “Did you cut open my heart?” “Yes,” said the surgeon.

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What Is Hell? Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to
attend this tragedy. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. And this one just about sums them all up: The Associate Minister unveiled the church’s new campaign slogan last Sunday: “I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours.

trol and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots for everyone over six months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giantfoodstores .com/flushot or www.martins foods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations.
