MARA Names Recreation Manager, Offers Programming BY FRANCINE FULTON
“I want MARA to be the biggest and the best and, with that said, still offer quality programs,” said Nate Diegel, the new recreation programs manager for Middletown Area Recreation Alliance (MARA). “I want our mission and our vision to stay true. I want to serve the people in the community and be that premier (organization) in the recreation industry.” A silent auction will be held as part of the Hershey History Center’s 24th annual Preservation Gala on Oct. 2.

he spirit, perseverance and resourcefulness of Italians who immigrated to the United States and lived and worked in the Hershey area will be celebrated during La Festa Italiana, to be presented by the Hershey History Center. Events will begin on Saturday, Sept. 25, when the history center will host its annual Preservation Tour. This year’s tour will highlight where the Italian immigrants worked, including the quarries and later the chocolate factory, as well as the music and food that they enjoyed and where they worshipped. Attendees will ride trolleys for the tour, which will depart from the history center, 40 Northeast Drive, Hershey, at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. “As they drive around, (they will hear) stories about the town and there will be actors who illustrate the stories,” said history center executive director Nikki Soliday. “Our guests will be able to get off the trolley and experience part of the story we are telling. There may be food samples. We did a tour last

FIA Receives Recognition, Plans Banquet Friends In Action International (FIA), a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator. Only a quarter of the 1.5 million charities rated have achieved this status. In 2022, Friends In Action will celebrate its 30th year of “supporting mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects and practical service to speed the Gospel to those who have never heard.”

and a brand-new tour focusing on different features of the Italian (community),” noted Soliday. The 2020 tour will visit the village of Swatara Station and the Italianowned businesses throughout Hershey, with a stop at the Italian Lodge. The new tour will visit the original St. Joan of Arc Church and convent and the quarries. The events are held in keeping with the mission of the Hershey History Center, which is “to preserve, promote and interpret” the heritage of the local community. “Every year we take our preservation event and create a theme that is tied to Hershey’s history,” Soliday explained. “One year it was focused on (the town of) Hershey (in) Cuba, which once produced sugar (for the Hershey chocolate factory). Another year we wrote, directed and produced a documentary on the Hershey Bears, and we premiered the documentary during the gala.” A link to purchase tickets for the gala and the tour can be found at www.hersheyhistory.org or www .facebook.com/hersheyhistory.org. Guests will learn about winemaking and stomp grapes, play Italian card games and listen to Italian music. An Italian lunch will be included for all tour participants. The following week, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m., the Hershey History Center will present its 24th annual Preservation Gala at St. Joan of Arc Parish, 359 W. Areba Ave., Hershey. Highlights of the gala will include authentic Italian cuisine, live Italian music by Crooner Rich and a silent auction. An Italian Mass at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church will precede the gala at 5 p.m. The annual awards presentation will also be held during the gala, which recognizes homeowners and businesses that preserve their properties and buildings in keeping with their original design and architecture. Because of the pandemic, the tour took place in 2020, but the gala did not. “There will be two tour scripts - one from last year

He is currently studying online at Slippery Rock University to earn a master’s degree in business administration. His previous experience was at Greater Elizabethtown Area Recreation & Community Services (GEARS), where he began volunteering as a teenager and worked his way up to program coordinator. Diegel explained that MARA is a joint partnership between Middletown Borough, Royalton Borough, Lower Swatara Township and Middletown Area School District. “We are serving those communities, but we also serve people outside the district that want to take our classes and participate in the things that we offer,” he said.

“Friends In Action is committed to stretching each dollar and prayer invested to do the most good, for the greatest number of people, to the highest glory of God,” said Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. “We owe this to our supporters and funders and are happy to be honored by Charity Navigator.” The four-star rating is the highest rating offered by Charity Navigator and verifies that FIA demonstrates strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. A detailed review of financial documents, such as the organization’s Form 990 and audited financials, as well as key policies indicated that FIA adheres to sector best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way. FIA has also achieved GuideStar.org’s Platinum Rat-
ing, the site’s highest rating, for integrity and GreatNonProfit.org’s badge as a 2021 top-rated nonprofit. Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action can participate in the FIA Mission Banquet to raise awareness and funds for Christian mission outreaches. This event will be held on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Harrisburg Hershey Sheraton Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. A served buffet dinner will feature beef tips, lemon herb chicken, and assorted desserts. The evening’s program will occur from 6 to 9 p.m. The banquet will include a show of appreciation for volunteers, donors, and sponsors; videos from West African villagers and the NiVan people groups of Vanuatu; and testimonies from the field. Atten-
dees will hear stories about the impact water projects are having on indigenous people groups who have yet to hear the Gospel. Games, prizes and giveaways, auctioned items, and an African drum expo will also be part of the event. To purchase tickets or sponsor a table of eight people, readers may contact 717-546-0208 or fia-usa@ fiaintl.org by Friday, Oct. 1. Online registration is available at www.fiaintl.org/ banquet. MARA was established in 2018 to replace the Olmsted Regional Recreation Board, but was suspended for a time because of the pandemic. “There was someone else in my position for a few years and then COVID happened and MARA could not sustain operations,” Diegel explained. “In July, I came on as the (recreation programs manager).” The first new program offered by MARA was youth field hockey, which began in early September. Upcoming programs for students will include Snapology, which is a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) program. Six-week sessions will be held at Fink Elementary School beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 28; at Kunkel Elementary School beginning on Wednesday, Sept 29; and at Reid Elementary School beginning on Thursday, Sept. 30. Evening Snapology classes for nonresidents will be open to the public at Middletown Area Middle
School, 215 Oberlin Road, beginning on Sept. 29. A glass fusing class will be offered by MARA on Monday, Oct. 18, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the MSCO Building, 50 W. Emaus St., Middletown. MARA is also offering two bus trips - one to the Peddler’s Village Apple Festival on Saturday, Nov. 6, and the other to New York City on Saturday, Dec. 18. For complete details about the classes and trips, visit https://mara.recdesk.com/ Community/Home. The new online program allows people to create an account, register for classes, pay online and see the classes they are enrolled in on the MARA calendar. Upcoming programs will include youth basketball and adult pickleball, which will start in October. MARA also offers a Breakfast with Santa program in December. For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com /MARARecreation or contact Diegel at 717-948-3300, ext. 1038, or ndiegel@raiderweb.org

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5
