Steve Loewen of New Holland camps regularly in his converted toy hauler that easily accommodates his wheelchair and other equipment.

A group of people from the Lancaster area enjoy roughing it on the south loop of Pennsylvania’s Black Forest Trail.

Let’s Go Camping! A Safer Way To Travel Is Trending before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the campsite. “We make breakfast

burritos so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her. “There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.” New Holland resident Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.” Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure camping is for them, Shady Maple RV offers rentals, starting with pop-up campers and ranging to motorhomes. “Demand for rentals went up (this year),” said rental specialist Lynnette Morris. “The majority of rentals were out every weekend this year,” she noted, adding that some days she has turned away more than 20 people.

The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food,

water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back

Accreditation by the ACFEFAC of a program at an institution is voluntary. To receive accreditation, a program must first submit a self-study. Then, a three-member team performs an on-site evaluation to validate the information submitted in the self-study, which is compiled into a team report. Next, the Accrediting Commission reviews the report, along with the institution’s self-study, and decides if accreditation will be granted and for how long. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) is taking a different approach to this year’s Golf Fore Kids’ Sake. Inspired by the action of one of its board members, BBBSCR is challenging local golfers to raise funds for its virtual mentoring programs. BBBSCR board member Joe Holston completed a 100-hole golf challenge fundraiser on Sept. 2, raising over $20,000 for the agency. Building on his momentum, Holston and BBBSCR are challenging others in the region to participate in their own personal fundraiser and golf 36 holes in October. Holston said that BBBSCR is seeking to fill the $60,000 gap in funding caused when BBBSCR had to cancel or delay its 2020 annual fundraising events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has made it difficult for mentors, called Bigs, and mentees, called Littles, to connect in person, but that hasn’t stopped BBBSCR from continuing its services. The agency matches new Bigs and Littles virtually, coordinates virtual match activities, connects matches via the BBBS app, and provides resources. The agency created a

Care-A-Van Volunteers Needed

Jeffrey Clouser

Jeffrey Clouser, director of music ministries at Palmyra Church of the Brethren (CoB), has been published in the summer 2020 issue of the United Church of Christ (UCC) Musicians’ Association Journal. In a three-page article, Clouser presents “Creating Vital and Faithful Worship for the Intergenerational Church.” Intergenerational congregations have a membership that consists of two or more generations which participate in activities that make them aware of different perspectives. There is an increasing interaction and cooperation among the generations to achieve goals that bring about change in the church, according to Clouser. In his article, Clouser reviews characteristics that illustrate how church musicians and worship leaders can create vital and faithful worship that ensures success in the current intergenerational context of worship services. To read the article, readers may visit https://uccma.wild apricot.org/resources/ Documents/UCCMA%20 Journal%202020%20 Summer.pdf. The article begins on page 22. At Palmyra CoB, Clouser facilitates the choral programs, consisting of the Chancel Choir, Men’s Ensemble, and Women’s Ensemble, along with the handbell and praise team programs. He also participates in the planning of the worship services and organizes special musical events for the church. He also coordinates the Summer Melodies musical offerings for summer worship. Clouser also works part time as a paraeducator for LancasterLebanon IU-13 serving See Clouser pg 12

The Middletown Care-AVan has an immediate need of volunteer drivers to transport senior citizens and qualified disabled residents within the Middletown Area School District to and from doctor appointments and the grocery store. The Care-AVan is an all-volunteer service. Volunteers must have a current driver’s license and a good driving record. They may choose the weekdays they would like to help for either half days or full days between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The van is disinfected after each use, and hand sanitizer is provided to riders. A face mask is required for entry into the van. Volunteers currently transport one passenger at a time with enough time between riders to disinfect the van. The drivers socially distance themselves from the riders, who are in the back seat. Drivers also take their own temperature and those of the riders using the provided touchless infrared thermometer. Readers may call 717-5808332 for more information.

Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until rice is tender, 28 to 30 minutes. Stir in beans, parsley and 1/4 teaspoon each of kosher salt and pepper. 4 . Heat broiler. After a minor mathematical error on a routine report, a worker’s boss tried to belittle him in front of his peers. Angrily she asked, “If you had four pumpkins and I asked for one, how many would you have left?” Quickly he replied, “If it was you who asked, I’d still have four pumpkins.”

Hydrate with tons of water throughout the day and your immune system will thank you! The foods you eat can also help prevent getting a cold. Yogurt has been show to boost the immune system, and pumpkin is another good immunity booster! Fact of the Week

Weight gain around this time of year may not be from all the food. Researchers have linked vitamin D levels and fat storage, so the lack of sunlight may have more to do with the extra gain than all the pumpkin spice lattes. (OK, maybe not more than … but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!)

Penn State Extension Master Gardeners have traditionally offered their Garden Hotline to answer the public’s gardening questions. County residents could also physically visit the Penn State Extension office to speak with a Master Gardener. This resource was available to answer gardening questions and concerns, including plant and insect identification, general gardening questions, pests, disease and more. However, with the office currently being closed to the public due to COVID-19, the Garden Hotline has been modified for the health and safety of the community. Effective Aug. 11, Lebanon County Master Gardeners are available to answer gardening questions via Zoom during virtual office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. Appointments can be

made by calling the Penn State Extension office at 717270-4391. Individuals can meet virtually with a Master Gardener through a Zoom link via a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Individuals who do not have access to a smartphone or internet will have the option to dial in through their phone for a conference call. After making an appointment, the office staff will provide the appropriate link or phone number to call. Alternatively, the public can also email any questions or concerns to a Master Gardener through the Master Gardener Hotline email account at LebanonMG@psu.edu. For more information, readers may contact Casey Clauser, Master Gardener coordinator, at 717-639-3589 or cmc7444@psu.edu.
