People interested in viewing artwork, meeting those who create it and learning about the artistic process are invited to take part in the fourth annual Hershey Hummelstown Art Studio Tour. As part of the event, 13 artists will open their doors to the public on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 16, from noon to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be offered at each location, and select participants will offer promotional activities such as giveaways, door prizes or a silent action.
During the free driving tour, visitors will be able to chat with the artists in their home studios.
“(The artists) are free to talk and to answer questions, explain how the work was done and what the artwork (represents). Some could be doing demonstrations,” said potter and watercolor artist Darlene Ferrier, who is one of the participating artists.

Art Studio Tour
She noted that the tour features a core group, but additional local artists are added each year. “This is an active arts community. We know each other. Sometimes we approach them and sometimes they approach us. They
have taken the tour and want to be a part of it,” she said, noting that all artists must live in Hershey or Hummelstown to participate.
Ferrier’s work will be featured at Jamie Juliana’s Phoenix Pottery Studio. “If
the weather is really nice, Juliana the potter has a wraparound porch and she will have (items) displayed on her porch,” Ferrier noted.
Another tour stop is the Art on Derry Co-Op, located at the home studio of stained glass and fused glass artist Laird Morgan, who also repairs stained glass. Art on display at the location will include stained and fused glass, jewelry, photography, woodwork, handmade soaps and oil and acrylic paintings.
“He (provides a place for) other artists who do not have a means of displaying their work,” Ferrier explained.
Each of the artists will have items available for purchase.
“The people who do the watercolors usually have cards made. You don’t have to spend a lot for a large piece of artwork,” noted Ferrier, adding, “People can also purchase Christmas gifts.”
In addition those already mentioned, other artists on the tour are James Arthur Davis, photography; Barbara James, sculptural mixed
media, watercolors and pen and ink; Sharon Jenne, original still life and landscape paintings; Dale Kelley, mixed media and dry brush watercolor; Ben LaDieu, black ink drawings/paintings; Marilyn LaDieu, acrylic paintings; Sue Ann Myers, o il, watercolorand mineral paint on porcelain and wildlife subjects; Jill Peckelun, oil paintings; Daniel Petruzzi, oil, watercolor, chalk and mixed media; and Archana Sehgal, oil, watercolor and acrylics.
“(The tour) is a lot of fun, and you meet a lot of nice people,” said Ferrier, crediting local art teachers for creating the local artist community.
“There are a lot of creative people in this area. Along the way, there were a lot of good art teachers ... and they provided really good instruction.”

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.
It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough eco-
nomic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.
In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle
Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.
With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.
If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact on your community, contact us at news@engleonline.com or visit https://townlively.com/event -submission to submit an event.
Lower Dauphin To Offer Free School Breakfast
Lower Dauphin School District will offer free breakfasts to students from Oct. 3 through the end of the 202223 school year.
On Sept. 9, Gov. Tom Wolf announced that the state will provide funding to ensure that every student in the commonwealth can receive
free breakfast at school this year, starting on Oct. 1. This change is only applicable to the School Breakfast Program in the 2022-23 school year and does not affect a student’s eligibility status for lunch, whether free, reduced, or paid.
Prior to COVID-19, Lower
Dauphin cafeterias averaged 48,000 student breakfasts per year. Last year, when free breakfasts were offered by the federal government, more than 68,000 student breakfasts were served.
For more information, contact the Food Service department at 717-566-5353.
Memorial To Close For
The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, will be temporarily closed to the public beginning on Friday, Oct. 7, for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.
The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.
Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.
Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’
Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.
One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping,
lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.
For information about any of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ services or programs for veterans, visit www. veterans.pa.gov or follow us at www.facebook.com/padmva or www.twitter.com/padmva.

Volunteers Sought For Tax Preparation
Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for. No previous experience is required, and training is provided.
Through Money in Your Pocket (MIYP), a program of United Way of the Capital Region, volunteers prepare taxes for free for low- to moderate-income working families in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties. Nationally, the effort is known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
program (VITA).
Since 2003, MIYP volunteers have filed 65,687 federal tax returns, resulting in more than $71.1 million returned to local families. MIYP has saved clients $9.853 million in tax preparation fees during that time. The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation services is $22,000.
The MIYP campaign received financial support from the PNC Foundation, the Truist Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.

White Cane Day Announced
White Cane Safety Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson first proclaimed Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day.
This special day originally served as a safety reminder to promote courtesy and special consideration to people who are blind and navigating America’s streets and roadways. Since this first observance, White Cane Safety Day has taken on greater meaning as a time to celebrate the self-sufficiency of people who are blind or visually impaired and their right to participate fully in society.
Every year, Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania, the nonprofit agency
for the blind and visually impaired serving Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, and Perry counties, recognizes the importance of White Cane Laws and salutes the greater independence of persons in the blind community.
Pennsylvania’s White Cane Law states: “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-ofway to any totally or partially blind pedestrian carrying a clearly visible white cane or accompanied by a guide dog and shall take such precautions as may be necessary to avoid injuring or endangering the pedestrian and, if necessary, shall stop the vehicle in order to prevent injury or danger to the pedestrian.”

Study Tips For Students
Assessments such as quizzes and exams help educators recognize areas where students are excelling and where they might need extra help. In addition to regular tests on their classroom lessons, many students take standardized tests for state assessment purposes.
Testing may come easier to some students than others, but having good study techniques can improve students’ performance on a wide range of exams. The testing preparation resource PrepScholar says it is important to build and maintain strong study habits to help students avoid undue stress and last-minute cramming. The following seven techniques may help foster good study skills.
First, students can try to find value in the lessons. Students might believe that what they learn in school is irrelevant in daily life, which can make the subject matter feel less important and uninteresting. Finding value in what one is learning and seeing how it can be applied outside the classroom may make a
Lions Club Will Host ’50s Dance
East Hanover Lions Club will host a ’50s Dance on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the East Hanover Community Building, 8884 Jonestown Road, Grantville. DJ Tony Bennett will provide music from the 1950s to the 1980s.
There is a nominal admission cost, and food will be available for purchase. Proceeds will be used to purchase clothing for children in need.
student more inclined to learn and retain the information.
Second, it is important to avoid distractions. Study time should be free of social media, video games, and any other distractions that can pull a student away from studying. Constantly checking notifications can interrupt thoughts and make it hard to learn the material.
Third, students should establish a system and a schedule for studying. Students should establish a routine of studying each day or at intervals throughout the week.
Fourth, it is important to establish dedicated study spots. Students should locate places that work best for them as study and homework stations. Certain individuals may need the quiet of a library or a bookstore while others may do best with the hum of conversation around them or as part of a
study group. There is no right or wrong study spot. Maintaining consistency will help the mind to associate a place with studying.
Fifth, students can use grades as benchmarks and motivators. Grades can indicate how well one is learning the material and, in turn, the effectiveness of the student’s studying habits. Students can modify their habits if they find they are not reaching their acadmic goals.
Sixth, students can rephrase the material. If students find textbook language dry and unappealing, they can try putting the material into their own words or rephrasing passages to make them easier to remember. Sharing the material with another person also may improve retention.
Lastly, making a formula sheet can improve study
habits. Depending on the subject, students can create a sheet with shortcuts, formulas, or diagrams, thereby arranging the material in smaller groups of information that are easier to digest. Along the same line, writing information down can help improve recall.
By following these study tips, students may increase their potential for academic success.

Open Stage To Present “Treasure Island”
Open Stage, a theater company located at 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg, will present “Treasure Island” on its Capital Blue Cross Main Stage. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 20 and 27; Fridays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28; and Saturdays, Oct. 8, 22 and 29, as well as at 3 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 9, 16, and 23, and on Saturday, Oct. 15.
The stage adaptation by Bryony Lavery brings to life Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of murder, money and mutiny.
On a dark, stormy night, Jim Hawkins, an innkeeper’s granddaughter, opens the door to a terrifying stranger. At the old sailor’s feet sits a huge sea chest full of secrets. Jim invites him in and her dangerous journey begins.
The production is directed by Open Stage artistic director Stuart Landon. It features one of largest casts in the history of the theater company, highlighting Gabrielle Dina as Jim Hawkins and Sean Adams as Long John Silver. The production’s cast of pirates and treasure hunters includes Brad Barkdoll, Daniel Bixler, Cynthia Charles, Liz Curtis, Christopher Robert Ellis, Chris Gibson, Jasmine Graham, Nicholas Hughes, Michael James Kacey, Kelli Kauterman, Rachel Landon, Josh Miccio, Chris Ondeck, David Richwine, Brian Schreffler, Tyler Shadle, Joellen Terranova, and Keel Warner.
The show features fight choreography by Nick Wasileski, musical direction by Brad Barkdoll, sound design by Joe Ickowski, and lighting design by Tristan Stasiulis. The set design is credited to Stuart Landon and Chris Gibson, with set dressing by Karen Ruch, scenic painting by Heather Jannetta, and property design by Becky Arney. Costume and puppet design is by Jennifer Kilander, wigs are by Diane Rothrock, and Stacy Reck is stage manager.
The book “Treasure Island” introduced many notions about pirates that are now iconic. Some adopted associations include how pirates look and speak, the one-legged seaman, black-sailed ships, and treasure maps marked with an “X.” These influences can be seen in pop culture films such as the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series and “Peter Pan.” These classic influences also appear in the stage adaptation.
To purchase tickets to “Treasure Island,” visit www.open stagehbg.com or call the box office at 717-232-6736.

Tax Credits Available To Farmers
A statewide program is offering $13 million in tax credits to help Pennsylvania farmers install conservation practices that can improve long-term viability, keep soil on the land, and reduce pollution flowing into local rivers and streams. Tax credits through the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program (REAP) program offset 50% to 75% of the costs of no-till planting and precision agriculture equipment, cover crops, forested streamside buffers, barnyard improvements, waste storage facilities, conservation plans, nutrient management plans, and other practices.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) started and led a diverse coalition that advocated for the creation of REAP in 2007. It was amended in 2019 as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, and REAP has received funding increases in the years since. According to the State Conservation Commission, REAP tax credits have been used on over 3,000 farming operations across the commonwealth since 2007.
To learn more about the Pennsylvania Farm Bill and to apply for the first-come, firstserved REAP program, visit www.agriculture.pa.gov; information about REAP is available by clicking on State Conservation Commission under Plants, Land & Water.
