Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for. No previous experience is required, and training is provided. In tax year 2017, 238 volunteers provided free income tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families as part of the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) campaign, a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families. Nationally the effort is known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). Volunteers filed 4,721 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.4 million returned to local families. The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation services was $21,227, and the average return was $1,218. The Money in Your Pocket campaign received financial support from the PNC Foundation and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service. Trust Fund Honors Veterans Organizations Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), recently attended an event to personally thank Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) grant recipients for their work in support of the commonwealth’s nearly 820,000 veterans. The event in Harrisburg was hosted by Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania, one of the honorees. The event was the third of four being held in Harrisburg, Erie, Bedford, and Norristown to recognize 31 VTF grant recipients. Grants issued through the VTF allow DMVA to expand its partnerships with charitable organizations, veterans’ service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs, ultimately benefiting commonwealth veterans and their families. The nine organizations recognized for their special programs and services include Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Harrisburg; Dog T.A.G.S., Mechanicsburg; Clinton County Office of Veterans Affairs; Franklin County

Office of Veterans Affairs; Juniata and Mifflin County Offices of Veterans Affairs; Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Camp Hill; Potter County Office of Veterans Affairs; Veteran’s Helping Hand, York; and Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. A total of 13 Pennsylvania County Veterans Affairs Offices received $150,000 in grants and 18 charitable or veteran service organizations received $650,000 in grants from the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Trust Fund. The grants are funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily made a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license or photo ID and renewing a motor vehicle registration, proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans license plates, and private donations. The DMVA is authorized to solicit and accept donations to the VTF on behalf of the commonwealth. Tax-deductible donations can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov. To learn more about the VTF, readers may visit www.vtf.pa.gov or www.facebook.com/padmva.

Nearly 2,000 walkers turned out for the 2018 Capital Region Heart Walk at Harrisburg’s City Island on Sept. 16, raising $577,000 for the American Heart Association. The fundraising total is expected to climb as additional donations are accepted through Tuesday, Oct. 16. Before departing on the walk around City Island and across the walking bridge to Front Street in Harrisburg, walkers had the opportunity to learn about heart health, receive a free blood pressure screening, learn Hands-Only CPR, try some healthy snacks and infused water and take a “Healthy Selfie” at the photo booth. Masters of ceremonies R.J. Harris and Chris Nallan, along with Heart Walk chair Mark Freeburn, welcomed walkers during the opening ceremonies and introduced the Thomas family of Boiling Springs, who shared the story of their 3-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Until July 2017, Rachel and Ryan Thomas thought their 2-year-old son Henry was a

normal, healthy boy. When they took him for a routine check-up, it was discovered that Henry had a serious congenital heart defect called coarctation of the aorta, or a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Just a few months later, on Sept. 29, 2017, Henry underwent a complete surgical repair of his defect. After a warmup led by Ashley Newcomer, Henry and his father, Ryan, led the walkers to the starting line to kick off the walk around City Island. Proceeds support the American Heart Association’s mission to support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. For more information about the Heart Walk, readers may visit www.heart.org/capitalregionwalk or call 717-730-1766.

The 2018 Capital Region Heart Walk stepped off on City Island in Harrisburg on Sept. 16.

Revival Event Planned

R021175

Three Christian music groups from Harrisburg and across the country will gather for “Coming Home - Revival 2018,” a revival event, on Saturday, Oct. 13. It will consist of two revival sessions at 1 and 7 p.m. at The Forum Auditorium, 500 Walnut St., Harrisburg. The all-day evangelistic outreach will feature two live music events, with prayer teams and a short message at the end. Doors will open one hour in advance for a time of worship led by Brian Villers. The event will feature music from Christian artists Love and

the Outcome, Curvine Ministries, and the Harrisburg Revival Choir led by Karen and Thaddeus Gatling of Harrisburg. It will close with a “Prodigal Son” message by Julian Awad. Prayer teams will be available for those seeking physical, emotional, or spiritual healing. The public is welcome to attend. While the event is free, tickets are required and may be obtained at https://revivalharrisburg .eventbrite.com or at the door if available. A limited number of tickets are available for each session.

Proceeds from the event will support mission work in Uganda by the International Bible Institute and Learning Center (IBILC). The IBILC is currently helping to build schools and churches and to develop Christian leaders in Uganda through English lessons, Bible study, and vocational training. The event is organized by the IBILC, in cooperation with a partnership of inter-denominational area churches and Christian leaders. For more information, readers may visit https://10000leaders.com.

Lightfoot Will Perform

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

This is a year of firsts for Siloam Ethiopia, an organization started several years ago by Demeke Getahun and Wegayhu Ketema, a married couple that resides in Elizabethtown. From the beginning, the goal of Siloam Ethiopia has been to open a clinic offering free health care to people who live in poverty in the rural area where Ketema grew up. This year, that goal was reached when the Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic opened in Harar in May. The organization’s first fall banquet will also take place this year. The fundraising event has been set for Saturday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. at Mountville Mennonite Church, 205 Froelich Ave., Mountville. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and appetizers will be available while guests mingle and place bids in the silent auction. The dinner will be a plated meal, and attendees may choose from a selection of American and Ethiopian entrees when they register at www.siloamethio.org/events. The deadline to make reservations for the banquet is Monday, Nov. 5. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and an offering will be accepted. There will also be opportunities to sponsor clinic workers or other costs associated with running the clinic. Getahun and Ketema will present an update on the clinic, which they are visiting from Sept. 26 to Thursday, Oct. 18. The couple plans to participate in the dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 13; inventory all of the supplies that have been donated to the clinic; and negotiate laboratory testing services with a local hospital. “That would be a savings of $300 a month,” Ketema said, noting that using the hospital’s lab would mean Siloam Ethiopia would not have to purchase an expensive complete blood count (CBC) machine. A CBC machine is still on the clinic’s punch list, just to be safe. Siloam Ethiopia would also

like to obtain a blood chemistry machine, an autoclave, and a water purification system that would serve the entire clinic. A larger reservoir for water is also desired, as one of the services clinic workers have found themselves providing is access to bathing. It costs Siloam Ethiopia about $4 for each client visit. In the months since the clinic opened, the client base has been predominately female. “ We primarily have seen women because women are inordinately affected by poverty,” board member Lindsey Teske said. “Ethiopia is one of six countries in the world that count for half of maternal mortality, and one out of every 64 mothers dies in childbirth.” She shared an additional statistic from the World Health Organization, reporting that in 2016, one out of every 21 babies died before their first birthday. “The good news is that rate has been getting better every year; it has been cut in half since 2010. Simple measures like prenatal vitamins and checkups make a big difference,” she said. Eventually, Siloam Ethiopia would like to make a difference in the lives of children by opening an orphanage to offer safe housing, education, and nutrition. “There are so many children in the streets,” Ketema remarked, noting that many youths have been orphaned due to AIDS. Siloam Ethiopia’s partner in Harar - Emmanuel United Church - has already taken in several young girls. To support Siloam Ethiopia, readers may attend the banquet, sponsor or volunteer for the event by emailing Teske at teskela@mail.com, or shop for items at the organization’s booth at the craft fair hosted by the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., on Friday, Oct. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Embroidered shirts, scarves, and tablecloths from Ethiopia will be offered, and orders will be accepted for fairtrade coffee, tea, and chocolate.

Elk Cam Goes Live The Pennsylvania Game Commission again has installed a camera on State Game Lands 311 in a field in Elk County that typically is a hub of elk activity as the bugling season this fall heats up. Video and sound from the camera are being live-streamed at www.pgc.pa.gov, and viewers can expect not only to see elk, but also turkeys, deer, and other wildlife. The live stream is the latest in a string of real-time wildlife-watching

opportunities offered by the PA Game Commission. The page also contains information on Pennsylvania’s elk, where to view them, and links to the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors website, which includes all sorts of helpful information for anyone visiting elk country. The live stream is slated to run until the end of the bugling season, likely sometime in mid-October. The top time to see elk on camera is late in the afternoon.
