The organization directly pays mortgages, rent, utilities and more to help ease the financial burden and allow the recipient to concentrate more on their treatment and getting well.
Geyers UMC to Host Trunk or Treat
The main goal is to help keep families in their home with food on the table during one of the most difficult times in their lives. VAF serves nine counties in central Pennsylvania and has raised more than $4 million for families in need.
For the past 20 years, the Angel Walk, which is the organization’s major fundraising event, has been held at Borough Park in New Cumberland. Last year, the event expanded to include a satellite location in Dauphin County, an area that is among those with the greatest number of people served by VAF. The walks will be held simultaneously.
VAF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.

White Cane Safety Day posted
White Cane Safety Day will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson first proclaimed Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day. This special day originally served as a safety reminder to promote courtesy and special consideration to people who are blind and navigating America’s streets and roadways. Since this first observance, White Cane Safety Day has taken on greater meaning as a time to celebrate the self-sufficiency of people who are blind or visually impaired and their right to participate fully in society.
Every year, Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania, a nonprofit agency
for the blind and visually impaired serving Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, and Perry counties, recognizes the importance of White Cane Laws and salutes the greater independence of persons in the blind community.
Pennsylvania’s White Cane Law states, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the rightof-way to any totally or partially blind pedestrian carrying a clearly visible white cane or accompanied by a guide dog and shall take such precautions as may be necessary to avoid injuring or endangering the pedestrian and, if necessary, shall stop the vehicle in order to prevent injury or danger to the pedestrian.”

T he Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Enola. Attendees should arrive by 7 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.
Scott L. Mingus Sr., a historian who has written 30 books on the Civil War, will examine the enduring controversy over the whereabouts of Confederate cavalryman J.E.B. Stuart before and during the Battle of Gettysburg. Many people erroneously believe that Stuart was on a glory ride around the Army of the Potomac while the Battle of Gettysburg raged, deliberately depriving Robert E. Lee of “the eyes and ears of the
army.” Mingus will discuss Stuart’s route north, the obstacles that caused him to miss his planned connection with Lee’s army near the Susquehanna River, and the exhausting ride over the hills of York County from June 30 to July 2, 1863, concurrent with the first two days of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The lecture is free. For more information, visit https://harrisburgcwrt.org or contact Stephen Smith, programs chair, at 717-433-0209.
Additionally, the Harrisburg and Hershey Civil War round tables will sponsor a fall field trip to Winchester, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 4. The trip will focus on the Second Battle of Winchester, which took place in mid-June of 1863 and was a

stunning Union defeat that opened the door for the Army of Northern Virginia’s invasion of Pennsylvania. The Second Battle of Winchester led directly to the Battle of Gettysburg. Mingus, the co-author of the leading book on the battle and a subject matter expert on the 1863 invasion, will serve as the tour guide.
The fee includes round trip transportation by motor coach, entrance fees, the guide honorarium, and a buffet lunch at the Golden Corral in Winchester. Gamut Theatre will present its season opener “I Don’t Speak Spanish” by David Ramón Zayas. Performance dates and times are Fridays, Oct. 13 and 20, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 14 and 21, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 15 and 22, at 2:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.gamut theatre.org/i-dont-speak -spanish for more information and to buy tickets or call the box office at 717-238-4111.
“I Don’t Speak Spanish” follows a Mexican-American family line across the last 100 years and seeks to reframe that statement, “I don’t speak Spanish,” in the context of generations of struggle with assimilation, race and class. The play closely looks at three events: a dinner in 2019, a street fight in 1943 and an impossible choice in 1915, where the inherent duality of the family’s Latine experience
is forced to be contended with.
All of the stories told in the play are based on true historical events. The research into those events began with Zayas looking into his own family history and subsequently conducting personal interviews with more than 30 people about their own family’s experiences with language, identity and race.
In addition to writing the play, Zayas is also the director and a performer. He noted that this is the first time in nearly 20 years that he will be able to play multiple characters written for a Latine actor.
Gamut Theatre is the combined theater company of Popcorn Hat Players Children’s Theatre and Harrisburg Shakespeare Company. Gamut’s mission is to tell classic stories in new and exciting ways. For more information, visit www.GamutTheatre.org.
The effects of infrequent driving on a vehicle
Driving causes a certain measure of wear and tear on a vehicle. Whether a vehicle is used primarily for commuting or as a vessel to take travelers to places unknown, wear and tear is inevitable. On the opposite end of the spectrum, individuals may not realize that failing to drive their vehicles regularly also can affect performance. Here’s a closer look at what can happen when vehicles sit idle for lengthy periods of time.
The battery can lose its charge. The battery in a vehicle is still being used even if the car isn’t running. Batteries power various components in a car, such as the vehicle computer, phone chargers and more. If the
engine does not turn over and help to recharge the battery, the battery will eventually die. People who drive infrequently may want to consider a trickle charger that’s plugged in during periods of non-use.
Tires also can be affected, as they may become prone to dry rot. The rubber in the tires can dry out and become brittle, causing splits and cracks to form. Driving with rotting tires can cause tires to deflate.
Also, when tires are not used frequently, the weight of the car can put continual pressure on the same parts of the tires, leading to flat spots. Tires also can lose pressure if they sit too long. Rust and corrosion can

occur. There is still plenty of metal in modern vehicles. A vehicle that has been exposed to salt or rain or one that is stored in a moist climate can be susceptible to undercarriage or engine rust. This rust may cause damage that’s not easily repaired.
Additionally, a vehicle parked in one location for a long time could be a target for bird droppings, fallen berries, sap and other substances that are potentially harmful to the paint. Leaving a car or truck out in the sun also means UV rays can cause clear coat over the paint to oxidize, producing blotchy or peeling spots.
The brakes may also suffer. When vehicles are left to
sit, corrosion could build up on the rotors, and the brake pads may become less flexible. Moisture also may seep into brake lines, causing issues with pressurization of brake fluid. Each of these factors adds up to brakes that do not work properly, which is a big safety hazard. Oil and other fluids may lose efficacy. Various fluids can go stale in a vehicle if it isn’t regularly driven. Gasoline also may develop condensation, which can reduce efficiency and performance. Taking short trips helps avoid this issue.
Infrequent driving can cause damage to a vehicle, but many potential issues can be avoided by driving vehicles more often.

A high-flying show like no other
BY JEFF FALKSome of us are more in tune with nature than others. Cryss Stacey enjoys a direct connection to it.
A graduate of Warwick High School, Stacey is a falconer and the owner of Edged Feather Experiences. Her passion and livelihood revolve around owning and caring for seven different species of birds of prey, but what she really is, is an advocate for nature.
“Growing up, I was always an outdoorsy kind of kid; you couldn’t get me out of the woods,” said Stacey. “But I wasn’t always allowed to have my own pets. I’ve always been drawn to them; I’ve always wanted to work with them. I didn’t even know birds of prey was a thing. When I first saw it, I was consumed by it.”
Edged Feather Experiences is one of the many unique attractions currently appearing at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire at Mount
Hope Estate & Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim.
Stacey stages three 30-minute shows each weekend day on the Ren Faire’s joust field, each featuring a different bird of prey or combination of birds.
The entertaining and educational shows are designed to display each species’ skills and talents as hunters, and the last five minutes of each show are used for audience questions and photos. When Stacey’s birds aren’t performing, they can be viewed on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate & Winery.
“I try to get the audience as close to the birds as possible, within reason,” said Stacey. “My goal is to give (members of the audience) a better appreciation of the world around us. All of the birds are very much individuals. One of my birds gets so excited before shows. I’ve got another bird that just loves to be around people; he thrives on attention. They are absolutely performers. They know their
jobs really well.”
Stacey’s flock of hunters consists of Titus, a red-tailed hawk; Kasai, an African augur buzzard; Skyler, an African lanner falcon; Goose, an African tide crow; Wicket, a barred owl; Jack, a Harris’s hawk; and Sir Dante, a Eurasian eagle-owl.
“It is a very one-sided relationship,” said Stacey. “If I were to drop dead, they’d eat all the food and fly off. There would be no mourning. But I care deeply for the birds. I can’t tell you how much I’ve dedicated to them. Their care requires a well-trained hand.”
“It’s my job to give them as natural a life as I can - that they get to be birds,” added Stacey. “It’s also my job to make sure they’re well exercised and flown regularly. We rehearse with them, and when they’re done, they get their food as a reward.”
After being involved in wildlife education for 12 years, Stacey founded Edged Feather Experiences in the
spring of this year. Stacey and her birds mainly perform at Renaissance fairs, but they’ve also been featured at Girl Scout gatherings, weddings
Music on High will feature many genres
BY CATHY MOLITORISThe Music on High series at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown offers a wide range of musical styles and gives the church the opportunity to invite the community in, said Kevin Gane, director of music and organist.
“We’re very blessed to have a beautiful space and a beautiful instrument here,” he said, referring to the church’s 1949 Moller organ. “We want to share that with our community. We wanted to open our space to people who maybe don’t come to church on Sunday.”
The series began last year after a congregant suggested an organ concert at the church’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration. The concert was so well received, Gane recalled, that he decided to develop a series.
Held at the church at 75 E. High St., the series is funded by a former pastor and his music director wife, Raymond and Theresa Fetter, who left a trust in their name. It allows Gane to offer seven concerts, all free of charge.
Music on High will kick off
on Thursday, Oct. 12, with a performance by the Leesburg String Quartet beginning at 7 p.m. The concert will feature both classical and popular music.
On Sunday, Dec. 3, Advent lessons and carols will be highlighted at 4 p.m., with readings, hymns and choral music.
The series will continue on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 5:30 p.m., with a Christmas Carol Festival, featuring Gane and the Christ Lutheran organ.
On Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, organist Abbie Wood will perform at 7 p.m. She plays Baroque, romantic and contemporary period organ music.
For the second year, the series will feature the Youth Music Festival, showcasing the talents of youth solo performers, the youth choir and the handbell ensemble at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024.
The series will continue on Friday, March 29, 2024, at 7 p.m. with a Good Friday service, featuring an encore performance of Bob Chilcott’s St. John Passion from last year’s series. Jonathan WalkerVanKuren will perform as the

Evangelist.
Wrapping up the series, the Elizabethtown Area High School chamber choir will perform on Sunday, May 5, at 4 p.m. The choir features more than 20 students in grades nine through 12.
“The series is a mix of bringing back some of the classics from our first year and some new performances,” Gane said. “We have a little bit of music for everybody. If you’re not specifically into classical music, we have lighter fare as well. You’ll find something you’re going to enjoy no matter what concert you go to.”

“I want to share my passion with other people,” said Stacey. “When you have a spark inside, you can set it
ablaze with dedication. I’m proud of where I come from, where I am now and what the future holds for me going forward.”
