Dar Chapter from pg 4 sew blankets made by the Lebanon Chapter membership. Smith spoke about some of the many free or low-cost services Lebanon Family Health Services provides to people in need. As part of the organization’s WIC program, called Booties, Bibs, and Blankets, each new client receives a blanket. Smith explained that these blankets are donated by community members. DAR members gathered this summer at two sewing circles to make blankets. Members and guests of the Lebanon Chapter of the DAR will meet on Saturday, Oct. 20, at noon at Hoss’s Steak and
Seafood House, 1235 E. Main St., Annville. Retired Army nurse Ann Thompson will speak about her service in Vietnam during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Thompson and fellow nurses Barb Deardorff, Diane DuPont, Rhona Knox Prescott, and Linda Goodhart are authors of the book “Another Kind of War Story - Army Nurses Look Back to Vietnam. For more information about the Lebanon Chapter of the DAR, readers may contact Bonnie Loy, the organization’s registrar, at bloydar@comcast.net.

The show will also include a used clothing booth, a used powersports corral, a youth snowmobile safety course on Oct. 27, and a benefit auction, as well as giveaway drawings for trailers. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis impersonators will perform during a dinner and show on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Historic Hershey Italian Lodge, 128 Hillcrest Road, Hershey. A social hour will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner from 6 to 7:15 p.m. The show will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Vegan and gluten-free meal options will be available. Appetizers and desserts will be included with the meal. For the show, Robert Cabella will impersonate Dean Martin and Angelo Capone will impersonate Jerry Lewis. Cabella has been impersonating Dean for 30 years. He was the winner at the NYC Little Italy San Gennaro Festival, featuring 11 opponents celebrating the real Dean’s 100th birthday. He also won a competition against 15 opponents in Steubenville, Ohio, Dean’s hometown, in honor of the legend’s 100th birthday, with Dean’s daughter Deanna in attendance.

Capone has been impersonating Jerry for 30-plus years. He has been recognized for his chemistry with Cabella. He will share Jerry’s many characters with the audience, and he will sing. Local artist Corinna Joy will present the opening act and will perform a duet with Cabella. There is a per-person cost, with discounts for groups of 10. Readers may call Peggy, the event coordinator, at 717-974-0458 for tickets and information. Meal selections must be made at the time of reservation.
The Keystone Recreation, Park, and Conservation Fund was established by an act of the General Assembly in 1993. The Department of Education, through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Bureau of Library Development, administers the public library portion of this program, which is funded from a portion of the realty transfer tax. Grants pay up to 50 percent of eligible costs in planning, acquisition, construction, and rehabilitation of public libraries. A competitive grant application process is used to award matching facilities grants to municipalities that sponsor stateaided public libraries. The Keystone Grant requires a dollar-for-dollar match. The
Hershey Public Library Endowment Trust and two bequests, the Lescanec and Vanderwal legacies, are providing the funds for the required match. Construction will commence in 2019 and last approximately six to eight weeks, during which time the library will remain open with the goal of causing minimal disruption to patrons. For more information on these planned improvements or to learn how to support the Hershey Library Endowment Trust, readers may contact library director Laura O’Grady at 717-533-6555, ext. 3715, or lauraogrady@derrytownship.org.

Local meteorologist MaryEllen Pann who will serve as the master of ceremonies for the day. In addition to the 5-miler and and 5K, the event will include a bounce house for children, a 32-foot rock climbing wall, a baked goods sale, and opportunities to enter to win gift baskets and other prizes such as an electronic tablet, a sports watch, restaurant gift cards, and tickets to area amusement parks and attractions. Food trucks will have a variety of items available to purchase throughout the event. “Pediatric Cancer Started This Fight: We End It” will be the theme of this year’s event. According to the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler website, the event has donated more than $15,000 to the Emily Whitehead Foundation. In 2012, Emily became the first child in history to be treated for her cancer using her own re-engineered T cells. After relapsing from her bout with leukemia, Emily entered a clinical trial at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she underwent this radical new therapy. She almost died and was on life support for two weeks and in a coma, but the doctors at CHOP fought to keep her alive while they addressed the side effects from this new treatment. Emily fought hard too and awoke from her coma on her seventh birthday. Detailed medical tests revealed she was cancer-free. Six years later, Emily’s story continues to inspire people as doctors and researchers have built on Emily’s case and now the same treatment is being used to save the lives of many children and adults. The Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to the new treatment in the summer of 2017 so that it could go nationwide and help save the lives of more children. Since then, it has been used internationally. Today, Emily is a healthy and cancerfree 13-year-old. Her family established the Emily Whitehead Foundation in order to help fund more innovative treatments in fighting childhood cancer. Emily has made appearances on various news shows and has had the chance to meet numerous celebrities and government leaders, including visiting the White House in 2016 to meet President Barack Obama. In addition to supporting the Emily Whitehead Foundation, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler will also benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Pennsylvania, which has a long history of funding successful treatments for pediatric cancer - including being a major force in the field of immunotherapy. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or contact race director Tom Garrett at 717-315-7228 or tgarrett7@msn.com.
