Dauphin County Court Appointed Special Advocates’ first class of 12 court-appointed special advocates (CASAs) was sworn in on Oct. 17 by Judge John Cherry of the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas. Dauphin County CASA aims to provide increased support for the children who enter the dependency court system due to abuse or neglect. A CASA is a trained volunteer advocate who is appointed by a judge as a personal representative of a foster child. CASAs help children navigate the court system, obtain needed services and find a secure, permanent home. A CASA gathers information from the foster child as well as from the child’s biological parents, foster parents,

teachers, counselors and others. Working in collaboration with Children and Youth Services and the guardian ad litem, the CASA makes recommendations to the judge as to what services or actions are in the child’s best interest. The new class of CASAs consists of Wanda Heise, Dianne Theal, Elaine Groff, Lisa Barry, Melanie Cook, Katelyn Meece, and Claude Phipps, all of Harrisburg; Lindsay Frenz of Newport; Jennifer Dimino and Michael Dimino of Carlisle; Dolly StarliperBashore of Hummelstown; and Kathryn Weaver Myers of Lebanon County. They will start their duties within the next few weeks. The AACA Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, has announced the donation and debut of an automotive sculpture, “New York to Paris, ’08.” The highly detailed, limited edition bronze sculpture is now on exhibition at the museum. Automotive artist Stanley Wanlass created “New York to Paris, ’08” in 1982 in tribute to America’s pioneering spirit. The 125-pound bronze sculpture depicts the winning Thomas Flyer in action. Only 30 hand-signed and numbered copies were produced and sold to collectors and museums. This example is the first one, the artist’s personal proof. It was sold by the artist to Howard Scotland in 1987 and was donated to the AACA Museum in memory of Howard by his wife, Judith Scotland, of Cheyenne, Wyo. At the turn of the 20th century, the automobile was a relatively new and generally untested mode of transportation. To raise confidence in their product and gain exposure, manufacturers routinely participated in endurance runs, competitive races, and all types of motorsports contests that were promoted by newspapers and other types of print media. The 1908 New York to Paris race attracted international

competitors and took the automobile to places it had literally never before traveled. Six international teams representing four different nations began the race in New York City. Few paved roads - and often no roads at all - awaited them in a marathon that lasted 169 days - a motorsports record that stands today. After reaching San Francisco, the cars were transported by boat to Alaska, Japan, and Siberia. Along the way, they encountered a host of impediments before the lone American entry - a 1907 Thomas Flyer built in Buffalo, N.Y. - arrived in Paris. The New York Times and the Paris paper Le Matin provided daily front-page updates sent to them via telegraph from across the world. The winning Thomas Flyer is enshrined in the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nev., and the race is the subject of numerous documentaries. The AACA Museum Inc. is an independent, nonprofit organization that is not affiliated with The Antique Automobile Club of America. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, readers may call 717-5667100 or visit www.AACA Museum.org.
