Amy Leonard (right), development director of Ronald McDonald House Charities, recently received a check for $4,000 from David Krieger, president of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Central Pennsylvania. The funds were raised by attendees, supporters, and staff at seven cornhole tournament games held throughout central Pennsylvania over the summer and hosted by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Cares, the business’s charitable arm. Staff members have also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House Charities, 745 W. Governor Road, Hershey, serving meals as part of the Guest Chef Program and assisting with a demo day on Oct. 6. Ronald McDonald House provides temporary housing at no charge to out-oftown families of seriously ill children who are being treated at Penn State Children’s Hospital.
MHS Expands CTE Program Milton Hershey School (MHS) high school students will receive credit for in-class and on-the-job training that could qualify them for a state-registered, pre-apprenticeship certificate. Training includes construction and carpentry coursework within the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program and paid internships or co-op experiences during a student’s senior year. Students also may earn credit for a year of related technical instruction.
Their pre-apprenticeship credit and certificate will count toward their apprenticeship if students are selected to complete an apprenticeship with Pyramid Construction Services. Students also may earn 32 credit hours toward an associate degree in a related field at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College after completing their apprenticeship and related technical instruction. To learn more about the school’s CTE program, readers may visit www.mhskids.org.

Chautauqua Acquires Land Tract The Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna, recently acquired more than 18 acres of the historic privately held Soldiers Field. The purchase was completed primarily with funds that were donated to the community capital campaign. Saving Soldiers Field Committee co-chairs John Feather and Mike Sherman announced that the committee raised more than $850,000 in pledges to be paid over three years toward a nearly $1 million purchase price. Nearly all of the more than $680,033 in first-year pledges has been received by the committee. The unified effort has resulted in pledges which have come from all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua board of managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation. In July, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land to benefit the Mount Gretna community. The purchase will benefit the community by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing recreational opportunities
such as walking/fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas, and Railsto-Trails linkage; providing educational opportunities and programs such as tree identification, nature experiences, and historical markers; and providing periodic overflow parking for Mount Gretna’s many summer cultural activities and programs, as well as for area businesses. Soldiers Field reflects part of Mount Gretna’s history. This is the site where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training from 1885 to 1935, when it moved to Fort Indiantown Gap. Troops trained on Soldiers Field for service in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Rails-to-Trails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them. The Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation is accepting contributions online and by check. Information is available at www.pachautauqua.info under the Saving Soldiers Field section or by calling 717-964-3270.

The Pennsylvania Treasury has launched a new state website dedicated to reuniting military decorations that have been reported as unclaimed property with their rightful owners. The new search function allows users to search their names, or the name of a loved one, to see if Treasury is holding a military decoration as unclaimed property. In addition, users can look through a photo gallery featuring some of the decorations that are in the unclaimed property vault, as well as medals that have been returned to their rightful owners. Military decorations are often reported to Treasury as contents held in a safe deposit box that has gone unclaimed or abandoned. Since 2017, Treasury has returned 58 service decorations, some of which have been in Treasury’s custody for decades, including Purple Hearts, to their rightful owners. Treasury continues to search for the owners of more than 500 unclaimed military awards. To search for unclaimed military decorations, readers may visit www.pa treasury.gov.
