preview of Dan Forrest’s new work commissioned for the chorale’s 40th anniversary, “Let the Stable Still Astonish.” This year’s Candlelight Christmas concerts will include classics interwoven with new settings of familiar texts. Performances will take place on Friday, Dec. 17, at the High Center at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 18, at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 19, at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, at 4 p.m. This year’s Candlelight Christmas concerts will bring back the traditions of audience sing-alongs of familiar carols and closing moments featuring candlelight and “Silent Night.” Attendees will hear
selections from past concerts - “The Work of Christmas,” “This Christmastide,” and the spirituals “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow” and “Go Where I Send Thee” - all of which have been included on the chorale’s new 40th anniversary double CD, “Legacy.” The chorale’s May concerts will be “A Celebration in Song!” They will be filled with sacred and secular music from throughout the chorale’s four decades, including Schubert’s “Holy, Holy, Holy”; Bruckner’s “Locus Iste”; Philip Stopford’s “Do Not Be Afraid”; two classic early American folk hymns, “Down to the River to Pray” and “No Time”; and “Java Jive,” made famous by Manhattan Transfer. The concerts will end with Rollo Dilworth’s “Shine the Heavenly
Light” and a special performance of “Shenandoah” with chorale alumni. Performances will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 8 p.m. at the Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey and on Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at the Messiah University’s High Center. Audience members are invited to a reception following each of the Christmas and spring concerts. The Susquehanna Chorale will continue to livestream concerts to reach listeners unable to attend in person. For tickets and more information, visit www.susquehannachorale.org or call the Messiah University Box Office, which handles tickets for all the chorale’s concert venues, at 717-691-6036. Julie Baum, supporter relations director of Align Life Ministries, is clear on how the organization, which first opened in 1985 as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services, has come to be called Align Life Ministries. “The short answer is, ‘It was God’s idea,’” she said. The long answer is a little more complicated. “First, God taught us the importance of having the word Align in our name,” explained Baum, who added, “When you align your heart and mind with Him, life springs forth.” She also noted that nearly a decade ago, the organization felt called to partner with other Christ-centered, life-affirming groups and began working with a ministry in Philadelphia, offering information on partnering with churches, engaging with donors, and even helping to obtain an ultrasound bus for one organization. But partnerships were only part of the story. The ministry also offers equipping
resources to other organizations. “We were meeting with high school students and teaching them ways to walk in sexual integrity,” said Baum, referring to a curriculum for teens and young adults called “Sexuality by Design.” The ministry also offers leadership help in the form of president Lisa Hosler’s book called “The Unexhausted Leader.” “(Our reach) extended beyond the Susquehanna Valley, so the name Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services wasn’t going to work much longer,” said Baum. The organization’s pregnancy services centers, located in Lebanon, Lancaster, Ephrata, and Columbia, became Align Pregnancy Services. Becca Keretzman, director of the Ephrata location, explained that each center offers a variety of services, such as pregnancy tests, prenatal and parenting classes, a baby boutique, and other services, including ultrasounds at some locations. Keretzman described the Earn While You Learn pro-
gram that rewards parents-tobe with Care Cash that can be used in the baby boutique. Those who attend all 15 weeks of classes may choose from a large item such as a crib. She added that classes are tailored to clients’ needs and may include videos, information on infant care, and prayer. The Gospel is proclaimed in words throughout the program. Parenting classes offer material for parents of children from birth through age 12. Clients may be served in person or virtually. “Ephrata is unique in that there is not another center close by,” said Keretzman, who noted as many as 20 clients a week visit the center. “We see people from the other side of New Holland,” she said. Baum noted that services are also available for those who have terminated a pregnancy. “We have Bible studies and one-on-one conversations,” she noted. During 2020, the ministry became acquainted with more than 500 new area families when the organization’s stockpile of diapers, baby wipes, and formula was needed by young families unable to obtain those items. “ We offered a week’s worth of free baby supplies at a time,” explained Baum, who recalled porch pickups and deliveries to families. “What a blessing to reach people spiritually and to meet physical needs.” Information about Align Life Ministries’ services may be found at https://align lifeministries.org.

Tips Offered For Destressing At Work Everyone has moments when work feels stressful and overwhelming. Diana Hendel, Doctor of Pharmacy and coauthor along with Dr. Mark Goulston of “Why Cope When You Can Heal?: How Healthcare Heroes of COVID-19 Can Recover From PTSD,” noted that workers need an action plan for handling those difficult moments. “ Why Cope When You Can Heal?” shares therapeutic approaches that are currently used to treat traumatic stress and introduces exercises to help people through difficulties. Hendel and Goulston recently offered some of these strategies for combating stress at work.

Take a few minutes to get grounded. Grounding focuses on the present and can by used when one feels carried away by anxious thoughts or feelings or triggered by upsetting memories and flashbacks. To begin, one should find a comfortable place to sit or stand, and if sitting, rest their hands on their legs. They should be aware of the sights, sounds, textures and scents around them. They can bring awareness to their body by performing stretches or tensing and relaxing muscles. They can tell themselves, “The flashback or emotion I felt is in the past. Right now, in this moment, I’m safe.” Harness the power of deep breathing. Slowly exhale through the mouth while focusing on clearing all the oxygen from the lungs. Inhale slowly and deeply through the nose for four slow counts. Hold the breath for four more
slow counts. On the next four counts, exhale again through the mouth until the lungs are empty. Hold the breath again for four slow counts. People can also carry a small reminder of something they love about their life and focus on it if they feel triggered and need to center themselves. The item might be a photo of one’s children or pet, a special necklace or something else. The person should think of the gratitude they feel for their life whenever they look at this token. They can also grab a human lifeline. Workers should make sure there’s at least one person they can reach out to when feeling stressed. Some workplaces have a formal support group to help workers deal with stress, but employees can also start their own informal group that might meet regularly or be available when a member needs support. People can
also reach out to their company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or contact a mental health professional. Hendel encourages employees to let their feelings out when possible. One can briefly move to a different room to cry or discreetly express pentup feelings. They could also get out of the building for a few minutes to take deep breaths, stretch the arms and legs and enjoy nature. Co-workers might take a short walk together. Another stress relief tactic is to play a mind game. Goulston noted that one can picture someone who loves them and speak to that person, imagining the person is providing encouragement. Hendel warned against bottling up one’s emotions because they will likely reappear, sometimes with greater intensity.
Contact Lens Safety Tips Offered Contact lenses can be safe and effective in helping people see more clearly. However, when used improperly, they can cause serious eye and vision problems, including corneal ulcers and potentially

blinding infections. Prevent Blindness shares ways for people to protect their eyes through proper contact lens care. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates all contact lenses as prescription medical devices. It is illegal for anyone to sell contact lenses without a prescription from an eye care professional. The FDA reminds the public that consumers need a prescription for all contact lenses, including decorative or cosmetic contacts, even if the user has perfect vision. Improper contact lens use can put people at risk of contracting keratitis, a painful eye infection, or acanthamoeba keratitis, a severe, painful infection of the cornea. The two biggest risk factors for acanthamoeba keratitisare are poor lens hygiene and exposure to water while wearing lenses. In the most extreme cases, a corneal transplant is necessary. The best way to avoid eye infections is to follow proper lens care guidelines as prescribed by an eye care professional. Prevent Blindness offered several tips for safe contact lens care. Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with soap and water, then rinsed and dried with a lint-free towel. Contact with water should be minimized, includ-
ing removing lenses before going swimming or getting into a hot tub. Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in either tap water or sterile water. Contact lenses should be worn and replaced according to the schedule prescribed by an eye care professional. During cleaning, using fresh solution, contact lenses should be rubbed with the fingers, then rinsed with solution before being soaked - even if the solution being used is a “no-rub” variety. Contact lens cases should always be cleaned with fresh solution, not water. The empty case should be left open to air dry. Lenses should never be put in the mouth, and saliva should never be put on lenses as saliva is not sterile. Lenses should never be shared with others. Contact lens wearers should not re-use old solution or top off the solution in their lens case. Cracked or damaged lens cases should not be used. Lens cases can be a source of contamination and infection. If any eye or vision problems are experienced, the contact lenses should be removed, and an eye care professional should be contacted immediately. For more information on contact lens safety, visit https://preventblindness.org /wearing-contact-lenses/.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) received a donation of $128,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc., to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s summer feeding and youth hunger programs. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping fight childhood hunger in the communities it resides in. As a result of the pandemic, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has seen an
increased need in its community. During the summer of 2021, the food bank served more than 63,000 meals across 63 summer feeding sites in 12 counties with assistance from the Sheetz grant. Funding will also be used for the food bank’s school pantry and backpack programs. This grant enables the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need.
