Boxes Of Joy from pg 1 Christmas gift that children in developing countries receive. To learn more about the program, including donation information, visit w w w. c r o s s c a t h o l i c . o r g / box-of-joy. NJHS adviser Josh Koch explained that the students collaborated with the Council of Catholic Women at the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church to complete the project. For about six weeks, SSBVM students were asked to bring in a variety of items to fill the 50 boxes, such as hygiene products, socks, small toys and school supplies. “We sent out a letter to the parents and asked that each grade bring in (specific items),” said Koch. For example, one grade was asked to bring in socks for girls and another grade, socks for boys. Another grade was asked to donate colored pencils. “We also gave parents the option to donate $9 to cover the cost of the shipping,” Koch noted.
The NJHS members gathered and sorted all the donations and then packed the boxes in preparation for blessing by the Rev. Timothy Sahd, Seven Sorrows pastor. “All of our boxes were blessed before they were sent to the Diocese of Harrisburg. From the diocese they will be sent to a Cross Catholic Outreach distribution center,” said Koch. “The distribution center will in turn distribute them to children in need throughout the world.” The collection for the shoeboxes actually started this summer when the parish hosted its annual summer festival, during which Mindy Kennedy, SSBVM director of development, held a scavenger hunt. “Mrs. Kennedy had a scavenger hunt in the nature lab during the summer festival and the NJHS members were there to facilitate that, and they handed out (candy) and temporary tattoo stickers,” said Koch. “I had a box there that asked the parent to donate for Boxes of Joy. We received
many donations that day.” The NJHS consists of students in seventh and eighth grades. To become an NJHS member, students must complete an application, which is then reviewed by a faculty committee. Students are admitted to the NJHS based on five categories: scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service and character. NJHS students are inducted during
a ceremony held at the end of Catholic Schools Week, which is celebrated in January. SSBVM, 360 E. Water St., Middletown, is a parochial elementary school serving students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Visit www.seven sorrowsschool.com or email mkennedy@ssbvm.org to learn more. A New Dish For The Holiday Table Thanksgiving hosts and hostesses interested in injecting variety into their Thanksgiving offerings may want to consider a few unique side dishes to complement their turkey dinners. Sides that borrow from familiar flavors may fit seamlessly into the holiday feast and add spark to the meal. This recipe for Gnocchi with Roasted Cauliflower from “Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple is rooted in popular ingredients synonymous with Thanksgiving. Gnocchi is a chewy and filling pasta made from potato - a holiday standard - while cauliflower is a mild, versatile vegetable that absorbs the
spices and flavors of other ingredients. Putting these two ingredients together allows holiday hosts to provide a new side with some familiar flavors at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Sweet Southern Slow-Cooker Ham Entertaining guests is a labor of love. Much effort goes into preparing a home for the arrival of friends and family, and that includes planning a menu. Hosts and hostesses who are looking to take some of the work off their plates can explore recipes that are less labor-intensive, such as those that employ a slow cooker. While busy families often use them to prepare weeknight meals, slow cookers also can be used when cooking for crowds. In such instances, they free up time for party hosts to tackle other jobs. This recipe for “Sweet Southern Slow-Cooker Ham,” courtesy of the National Pork Board and Yummly, utilizes a fully cooked, store-bought ham and some sweet and savory accoutrements. The ham can be served on its own, or it can be used to create
sliders. Since it serves 12, it is slow cooker. Whisk the cider with the brown sugar, boursuitable for a crowd. bon, honey, and mustard. Sweet Southern Slow-Cooker Slowly pour over the ham. Fall Cleanup Campaign Set The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) called on all Pennsylvanians to join in the Pick Up Pennsylvania statewide fall campaign to clean up streams, rivers, and lakes in their community. Pick Up Pennsylvania, a grassroots campaign that began in 2004, is part of the anti-litter movement in Pennsylvania. The Pick Up Pennsylvania fall campaign runs through November each year. It is coordinated by Keep Pennsylvania
Beautiful and sponsored by DEP, PennDOT, and the Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Zone Cleanup. This support provides registered events with free trash bags and gloves. Residents can visit https:// cleanup.keeppabeautiful.org/ Calendar.html to join Pick Up Pennsylvania cleanup events in their community. Those who would like to register their own local cleanup event can do so at www.keeppa beautiful.org/programs/
pick-up-pa/organize-an -event/. Individuals, families, neighbors, students, civic organizations, and local governments are invited to participate. The Wolf Administration released its Litter Action Plan in 2021 in response to a 2019 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study, which found Pennsylvania had more than 500 million pieces of litter on its roadways. The action plan includes strategies for all Pennsylvanians to fight litter in their communities. As part of the plan,
Now Featuring: the state launched a public awareness campaign, PA Fights Dirty, this summer. The campaign calls upon Pennsylvanians to ensure every piece of their trash, regardless of size, is disposed of properly. The DEP identifies many ways Pennsylvanians can fight litter at www.dep.pa.gov /litter. PennDOT provides many additional litter cleanup volunteer opportunities, including Adopt-A-Highway and Litter Brigades, at www.penndot.pa.gov.
