State Police To Offer Law Enforcement Training Program

Takingpart in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Christmas Fun For Everyone

When Brittany’s Hope hosts the eighth annual Christmas at The Star Barn Village on Saturday, Dec. 3, guests can expect a little bit more of everything. “Everything is going to be bigger and better than ever this year,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “We have some new games and crafts. We’ll have lots of outdoor music. There is going to be a lot of family fun.”

VIP admission to the event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and general admission will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“This is a fundraiser for Brittany’s Hope, but it’s also about bringing the Christmas spirit to everyone,” Myers stated. “It’s a great family tradition.”

Festivities will include outdoor reindeer games, a dance party, letters to Santa, interaction with characters from The Enchanted Teapot, cookies and hot chocolate, pony rides, face painting and a visit from Santa. VIP admission also includes breakfast and a family portrait.

Myers noted that visitors

to Christmas at The Star Barn Village can also just stroll the grounds for a self-guided tour, enjoying the scenery. “It’s a beautifully decorated property,” she shared. “It’s like walking into a Christmas wonderland.”

The event is made possible through the support of Stone Gables Estate and Food for Thought Catering, as well as presenting sponsors Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster and Abel & Son Roofing & Siding. Proceeds will benefit Brittany’s Hope, which provides support for orphaned

Roundtable Sets Meeting

Tom Lehman will present “Gettysburg Farms: Fields of Glory - Hear Their Stories.” Lehman will talk about the farms of Gettysburg and the 2,400 citizens whose lives

and properties were impacted by the battle in July 1863.

The meeting is free and open to the public. All persons interested in the history of the United States Civil War are invited to attend. Those who miss the meeting can view the presentation at www.hersheycwrt.org.

and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Life-changing things are happening with Brittany’s Hope,” Myers commented. “There are so many wonderful stories we hear every day of how the lives of these kids are changing. One hundred percent of everything we raise goes directly to the kids. We have no administrative costs thanks to our corporate sponsors.”

Anyone who comes to Christmas at The Star Barn Village is helping to make a

difference, Myers said, while also enjoying a fun day out. “If you’re busy and overwhelmed with the materialism of Christmas, you walk in here and you just feel joy,” she stated. “It’s a great way to start a new family tradition if you haven’t been here before. It’s a heartwarming day, and it kicks off the holidays, so those happy feelings don’t stop all through the Christmas season.”

Santa will visit with children at Christmas at The Star Barn Village.

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill

and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenariobased training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its loca-

tion in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the

kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible,

since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Lower Dauphin Students Earn Honors

Students from Lower Dauphin (LD) School District were recently recognized for their skills and accomplishments.

Seven students from Lower Dauphin High School have been accepted to participate in the ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) program this school year. The ACE Program takes place after school, with students from Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, and York counties meeting with mentors to discuss principles in design and construction from contracting and engineering to architecture and landscaping. Each student will also design a community built of shipping containers for this year’s individual project. Students from Lower Dauphin include juniors Abdi Henry, Braylee Klinger, Cali Mease, Logan Pedersen, and Nathaniel Wappman and sophomores Henry Lewis and Lauryn

Parcon.

Eight Lower Dauphin vocalists qualified by audition for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 7 Choral Festival to be held on Friday, Jan. 13, and Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Solanco High School, Quarryville. The singers include Nathaniel Wolfe, Olivia Carter, Audrey Meyers, Aden Weigle, Abigail Foran, Kaitlyn Hoffman, Abrianna Nissley, and Timothy Fausnight. At the end of the festival, the students will join students from an eight-county region to perform on Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Robert Bigley, director of choral studies and chorale and chamber singers at Lancaster Bible College.

Nine Lower Dauphin High School musicians were selected by audition to perform in the Lebanon Valley College (LVC) Honors Orchestra on Nov. 5. The

Honors Orchestra Festival provides an opportunity to rehearse and be directed by Dr. Johannes Dietrich, director of symphony orchestra and professor of instrumental music at LVC. In addition, Bridging the Gap, a violin-bass duo, will work with the students.

This duo features Peter Wilson, former concertmaster of the President’s Own Marine Band, and his colleague Aaron Clay, current principal bass player of the President’s Own Marine Band. Representing Lower Dauphin are Lauren Gula, Makenna Haldeman, Lila Markowitz, and Ananya Patil on violin; Aaron Gingrich, Joseph Goduto, and Marina Weidman on viola; Ada Hickey on cello; and Antonio Mardegain on bass. In addition to the festival experience, students are eligible to receive a $10,000 scholarship should they decide to attend LVC.

Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, will offer winter sessions for students in grades one to 12. The winter program will run on Saturdays, Jan. 14 to March 4. There is a cost per student per class.

Fairy Tales! Mixed-Up Fairy Tales! And Made-Up Fairy Tales! will be offered to children in grades one to three from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Children will bring characters to life in creative and interactive ways. They will also learn about settings and overall storytelling. Teachers always focus on the actors’ tools and will introduce fun games and exercises to help support these fundamentals.

Create a Scene! will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon for students in grades four to six. This eight-week session will make a slow progression from simple scenes to complex scenes to “write your own” scenes involving conflicts and problem-solving. Students will enjoy games, exercises, and improv to help develop understanding and confidence.

Create a Scene! for students in grades seven to 12 will run from 1 to 3 p.m. The older group of students will also focus on scene work with partners.

The playhouse is committed to the health and safety

of students and teachers. CDC guidelines will be followed.

Registration information can be found at www.hershey areaplayhouse.com in

the Theatre Academy section. Register at https://hap.booktix.com. For other information, contact Jill Panyard at jill panyard@gmail.com.

Workshop To Discuss Care Of Church Choirs PA Preferred Website Created

On Saturday, Nov. 19, the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present Wayne Wold of Frederick, Md., in a workshop titled “Preaching to the Choir: The Care and Nurture of the Church Choir.” The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the Martin Choral Rehearsal Hall of the Calvin and Janet High Center at Messiah University, 1 College Ave., Grantham. Shawn Gingrich, organ instructor at the university, will be the host of the event, which is co-sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association Student Chapter.

Wold’s presentation will

focus on pastoral care for church choirs, including topics such as choosing music, planning and running rehearsals, dealing with difficult people, recruiting singers, and pondering what has been learned from the pandemic, all through the lens of caring for choir members and creating community.

Many organists also serve as choir directors in churches, but this event is open to choir directors who are not the organists. Choir members or church music committee leaders and pastors are also invited to attend. The event is free of charge, and no reservations are needed.

Wold is councillor for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Guild of Organists, which serves approximately 275 chapters and 12,000 members throughout the United States and abroad; director of music and organist at First Lutheran Church of Ellicott City, Maryland; adjunct associate professor of music and director of the SU Church Music Institute at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va.; and professor emeritus of music and college organist at Hood College, Frederick, Md.

For more information, contact Tyler Canonico of the Guild of Organists at canonico @marketsquarechurch.org.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently launched a website for the PA Preferred brand, accessible at www.papreferred.com. The website allows people to search for Pennsylvania products and connect with farmers.

Items with the blue and yellow PA Preferred checkmark are grown, harvested, or produced in Pennsylvania, and buying these products means consumers are supporting Pennsylvania farmers and producers and keeping their dollars local. The Department of Agriculture encourages Pennsylvania residents to look for these products while exploring the commonwealth’s farmers markets and farm destinations this fall and winter.

Bouldering Competition Set

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host the 12th annual Bouldering Competition on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 8 to 11 a.m. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number. Contestants should meet at the Environmental Center. There is a registration fee.

Audubon Society Sets Programs

The Quittapahilla Audubon Society (QAS) has planned two programs, which are free and open to people of all ages.

Marci Mowery, president of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF), will present “Exploring Your PA State Parks” on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 723 Lehman St., Lebanon, near Monument Park. A well-lit, spacious parking lot is located behind the church along Spruce Street, and attendees are asked to enter the church from the parking lot entrance.

Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests provide myriad opportunities for engaging in the outdoors. Mowery will explore the history of and opportunities in

these places and will provide a list of new places to explore. A native of Lancaster County, Mowery spent her youth exploring the natural areas of the county and the mountains near her family’s camp, which shaped her future as a professional conservation leader. Her 27-year career spans various positions with the National Audubon Society and her current position with the PPFF.

On Sunday, Nov. 20, QAS will offer a field trip for the observation of the flora and fauna. Participants should meet at 2:30 p.m. at the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail Jonestown trailhead. For more details, contact leader Fritz Heilman at 717273-0487.

PennDOT Offers Winter Guidance

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently offered ways the public can prepare for the winter season. Members of the public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow-truck locations and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed. The information is provided via PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location technology, which uses units in the department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing a truck’s location.

To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, PennDOT offers operational information and traveler resources at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts.

Motorists should take the time now to ensure their vehicles are ready for winter and to know their own winter driving skills. Drivers should stock their vehicles with items needed

for their health, safety, and comfort. Motorists should prepare for potential wintry weather by checking that they have supplies in their car before heading out. These supplies should include food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.

Drivers should also consider how to react to whiteout conditions. In such conditions, drivers should slow down, not stop suddenly, activate their car’s hazard lights, and extend their following distance to prevent dangerous multiple-vehicle crashes.

In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days. The National Weather Service now issues Snow Squall Warnings that alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these areas.

If motorists encounter snow- or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions.

How To Avoid A Dry Turkey

For many families, a turkey is the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinner. However, some people are not fond of turkey because they find it to be dry.

There are various reasons turkey can dry out. Turkey is a lean meat, and Healthline reports that it has slightly less fat in its dark meat than chicken. Another reason a turkey may be dry is that it may have a poor breast-to-leg ratio. By the time the leg meat cooks to temperature, so it is safe for consumption, the breast meat often has dried out.

There are many ways home cooks can prevent a dry turkey this Thanksgiving.

saliva at work. Salty foods may stimulate the production of saliva in the mouth, helping the food to feel more moist on the palate. To get enough salt into the turkey meat, the turkey should be submerged in a salt brine for a few days before cooking.

It is important to watch the cooking time so as not to overcook the turkey. Some turkeys come equipped with pop-up timers to help cooks gauge when to take them out of the oven. However, a more accurate tool is a digital food thermometer that can be set to go off when the turkey reaches the correct internal temperature.

taken out of the oven when it reaches 5 to 10 degrees less than the safe temperature for the breast meat, around 165 degrees Fahrenheit; the meat will continue to cook while resting. After removing the turkey from the oven, cut off the legs and return them to the oven until they are done. Arrange the properly cooked breast and leg meat together on a serving platter.

East Hanover Lions Club held a ’50s dance on Oct. 8 at the East Hanover Township building. During the event, attendees danced to

music from the ’50s through the ’80s. John and Mary Beth Sexton was chosen as the best-dressed couple, and Pat and Betty

Wolfe were the spotlight dance winners.

The proceeds from the dance will be used to purchase clothing for children in need.

One way to create a juicier turkey is to brine the bird. According to ScienceBlogs, what causes a human to perceive a food as juicy may actually be his or her own

Another option is to cook the turkey parts separately. As previously noted, the breast meat will likely reach the desired temperature before the leg meat. To fix this, the turkey can be

Offering condiments can help to address dry meat. A moist dollop of stuffing, a drizzle of gravy, or a scoop of cranberry sauce can add moisture to turkey. This approach does not prevent drying out, but it can make dry turkey meat a bit more satisfying.

Dry turkey can put off diners. However, some strategies can help to address this problem.

Tips For Driving During The Fall

November is a dangerous month on Pennsylvania roadways. Less daylight combined with roads covered in wet leaves, morning and evening freezes, and reduced visibility can lead to more hazardous driving conditions. November is also an especially dangerous month in Pennsylvania for car accidents involving collisions with deer. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, often when commuters are on the roads.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority (IFPA) offered several safe driving tips for fall and early winter. Drivers should slow down and use extra caution on leaf-covered roadways, as wet leaves cause slippery conditions and can cover traffic lines. Drivers can maximize their reaction time by increasing the distance between vehicles, especially in

inclement weather and at dawn or dusk. Drivers are reminded to pay attention to bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas where icy spots can form.

It is important to check a vehicle’s headlights, tail lights, and turn signals to ensure they are working properly. Sun glare can coincide with the morning and evening rush hours, and according to PennDOT, the intense glare from the sun on the horizon can blind a driver, causing an unexpected traffic slowdown. Drivers can prepare for the glare by keeping a set of sunglasses handy, removing clutter from their sun visors, and keeping the inside of their vehicle’s windshield clean.

Drivers should use their car’s low beams to improve visibility when driving in fog. People should never drive with frost

on their windshield or back window. Tractor trailers have blind spots, so drivers should take extra care in passing. Big rigs take longer to slow down than cars, so motorists should keep a safe distance and share the roadway. Drivers should check that their tires have sufficient tread depth. Drivers should not text and drive and should avoid other distractions. When driving, seat belts should always be buckled.

In the event of an accident, drivers should know what their automobile insurance covers in terms of property damage and injury. Drivers may call their insurance agent or company if they are unsure of what their policy covers.

The roadways present many hazards to drivers in November, but drivers can take steps to help increase their safety.

The program’s aim is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required for writing a successful application. The program is designed for individuals new to grant writing, experienced grant writers looking to improve their skills, and individuals who work for, volunteer for, or are involved with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, local governments, or a foundation.

Participants will learn how to search for and find grant funds, recognize and respond to the components of a grant application, write an effective grant proposal, respond quickly to requests for proposals, work effectively with foundations and other funders, include evaluation strategies in proposals and projects, and write grants from a reviewer’s perspective.

There is a cost to participate. To register, visit

Giant To Offer Virtual Holiday Cooking Classes Center To Host Jurassic World Live Tour

As the holiday season begins, the Giant Company’s team of dietitians is back with a full schedule of festive, free, live classes via Zoom for families and chefs of all ages this November and December.

Classes will include Holiday Produce, set for Mondays at noon. Attendees will explore seasonal produce and all it has to offer. The recipes will include grape and goat cheese crostinis, cranberry brie bites and holly jolly pom salsa.

Wellness Workshops will be held every Monday at 7 p.m. in November. Dietitians will explain how to achieve blood sugar goals in honor of American Diabetes Month. In December, the programs will be about self-care.

Family Meals at 5 will be offered on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. The featured meals, which can be prepared in under 30 minutes, will include vegetable couscous with Moroccan pesto in honor of Kwanzaa, Hanukkah-inspired mini

latkes with toppings and hoisin chicken meatballs with peanut noodle sauce.

During Build a Board classes, attendees will learn how to create holiday charcuterie boards on Thursdays at noon in November and on Tuesdays at noon in December. Themed boards, such as the Thanksgiving Breakfast Board or the Mini Board for Santa and Reindeer, will be included.

Better for You Baking classes will teach attendees how to celebrate pie season by creating holiday maple sweetened pecan pie, mini purple sweet potato pies and gingerbread pudding cake with spiced whipped cream. The classes will be held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in November and on Thursdays at noon in December.

Mini Chef Mornings will be offered on select Saturdays at 10 a.m. in November and December. Children will be invited to create snacks based upon seasonal books in November

and classic holiday movies in December. Dishes will include pumpkin pie parfait cups, turkey toast, Grinch blossom cookies and Polar Express frozen hot chocolate.

All classes are free to attend, but advance registration is required for each class at www.thegiant companynutritionists.event brite.com. A complete list of all virtual classes and the ingredients needed for each class is also available on the event page. In addition, customers can earn 50 Choice Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and attend the entire class.

Jurassic World Live Tour, a live, family entertainment experience that brings the thrills of Jurassic World to fans, will return to Giant Center in Hershey. Showtimes are Friday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 27, at noon and 3 p.m.

Jurassic World’s score combined with projection and scenery will transform the arena into the dense jungles of Isla Nublar, where gyrospheres roll through the valley and scientists work to unravel a corrupt plan and save a new dinosaur from a terrible fate.

The Giant Center is located at 950 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, All seats are reserved; tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com or the venue box office.
