“Stuff The Truck” With Cat Food And More BY FRANCINE FULTON
erry Township Community Cats (DTCC), a nonprofit organization that provides trap/neuter/return (TNR) and vaccination services for outdoor stray cats, will present its annual “Stuff the Truck” event on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Karns Food, 731 Cherry Drive, Hershey. Shoppers will be asked to help fill the truck with supplies, including Purina Cat and Kitten Chow and Purina wet cat food, Fancy Feast and Friskies wet cat food and Yesterday’s News brand cat litter. Karns gift cards will also be accepted. DTCC was founded 10 years ago as way to humanely control the outdoor cat population in Derry Township. After humanely trapping free-roaming cats, neutering and vaccinating them, volunteers return them to their locations. “People really love animals, particularly cats, and they hate to see them out and about.

Although these stray kittens were trapped along with their mom by Derry Township Community Cats, they can be socialized and adopted.
If they are going to live outside, let’s make sure they are not reproducing, and the only way to do that is to trap them and get them spayed or neutered,” said Ginger Lowe, DTCC president. “The neighborhood feeds them, and they can be semifriendly, but not the kind you can bring into the house.” DTCC volunteers will deliver a trap to the homeowner and provide instructions on how to use it. “We will come out and get the cats and take them to our facility,” Lowe noted. The cats are later transported to a clinic where they are spayed or neutered and are given the appropriate vaccinations. “We set up cages and feed them and make sure that after surgery everyone is healed before they are turned back out,” said Lowe. DTCC is not a rescue, but it does partner with rescue organizations in the area that can find homes for kittens that may be trapped along with the mother cats. Unlike adult cats, kittens can be socialized and eventually adopted. All of the efforts are carried out by volunteers. “We have between 20 and 25 volunteers. Not all of them do the trapping. We need people who will
feed the cats and change litter boxes before and after the spay and neuter operation,” Lowe said. “We also have volunteers that take the cats over to the clinic and then wait and bring them back.” Derry Township finances the cost of the spay and neuter for each of the cats, but the organization must purchase its own cat food, litter and other items. “The supplies that we need to care for the cats before and after their surgery - these expenses are not reimbursed,” said Lowe. “‘Stuff the Truck’ is critical for us to obtain these supplies so that we can care for the cats this year and next year.” According to www.derry townshipcats.org, to date, the group has trapped, neutered and returned more than 1,200 community cats. “After a peak a few years ago, (the numbers) are really coming down now. Hopefully, we have entered a maintenance phase,” Lowe said. For more information, visit the aforementioned website, call 717-592-8087 or email derrycatsinfo@gmail.com. Local musicians have agreed to unite again in 2021 to create the third annual “Joy to the Burg” Christmas album to benefit people experiencing homelessness. Albums are scheduled to go on sale in November, and proceeds will support the homelessness ministries of Christian Churches United (CCU) in Harrisburg. This year, a music festival at The Englewood in Hershey has been added on the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 12. At least six of the bands will per-
form live at the event. Funds raised by “Joy to the Burg” will go toward continuing expanded winter walk-in shelter operations for both men and women in Harrisburg as well as efforts to help those living on the street to secure longterm housing. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information on “Joy to the Burg” or to discuss sponsorship opportunities, contact Steve Schwartz at sschwartz@ccuhbg.org or 717979-6247.

Close to 315 supporters gathered to celebrate and champion the mission work of Friends In Action International (FIA) at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel on Oct. 29. The event kicked off with an African drum expo led by Sue Dieffenbach, a former Cedar Crest Middle School band teacher, using her African djembe. The master of ceremonies was FIA deputy executive director Matt Durkee. Guests enjoyed a full buffet, including beef tips over noodles, chicken in tomato au jus, roasted potatoes, a vegetable medley, salad, and dessert, including peach cobbler, cakes, and pies. Focused around creating awareness and fundraising for FIA’s water-themed infrastructure projects, the event featured keynote speaker Jeremy Effler sharing about well-drilling efforts in Africa. Effler, FIA’s field leader in West Africa, shared how clean water is transforming lives by providing secondary health, educational, and economic impacts among villagers. As villagers receive clean water, missionaries working among the people are welcomed to share stories of Jesus, the Living Water. Guests were invited to join FIA in traveling to West Africa in 2022 to continue construction of a base camp in FIA’s new location as the organization prepares to serve in the area. Readers can learn more about a variety of FIA’s volunteer work trips at www.fiaintl.org/get -involved/trips/. After he and wife Jan were honored for his 30 years of faithful service, Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director, shared about FIA’s Vanuatu Water Project. The effort involves running 16 miles of
gravity-fed piping from a mountain source to 30 villages below, enabling more than 3,500 NiVan villagers to receive clean drinking water and have an opportunity to hear the Gospel. A game of “The Price Is Right” enabled the audience to guess prices of the 4-inch high-density polyethylene pressure pipe, shovels, and the McElroy Pitbull Fusion Machine necessary to the project’s success. New to this year’s annual banquet was the presentation of the Amanda Brandt Volunteer of the Year Award. Created in memory of Amanda Brandt, an FIA volunteer to the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua who died in 2018, the award honors other FIA supporters. Lily Medich, 12, and Kallie Medich, 9, of York received the award for raising over $5,000 on FIA’s behalf by selling hand-painted straw bags and hosting yard sales. FIA used the funds to help hundreds of children in Bolivia and Nicaragua through COVID-19 relief aid, provision of basic necessities, and biblical training. For their efforts, the girls received wooden animals hand-carved by Bolivian villagers. The evening concluded with an auction led by Roy Shirk of Shirk’s Auction Gallery in Annville, featuring African drums and carved wooden animals, original artwork by local artists Julia D’Orazio and Dave Haldeman, and quilts hand-sewn by the Little Pieceful Quilters of Mansfield, Mo. To learn more about FIA, visit www.FIAintl.org. To support FIA during the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 19, visit www.extragive.org /organizations/friends-in -action-intl.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently recognized 32 PennDOT employees with the Star of Excellence Award, PennDOT’s highest recognition. Michele Harter, P.E., contract management section chief and resident of Middletown, was among those honored for their outstanding performance. Harter was recognized for providing swift, professional guidance to customers during the state mandated shutdown. Construction projects were placed on hold to minimize exposure. She provided guidance to support these temporary suspension orders. PennDOT worked with industry partners on solutions for restart-
ing construction projects with the focus of avoiding the spread of the coronavirus. Harter was the PennDOT lead of the Lettings, Award, and Notice to Proceed (NTP) group of the construction restart team. A multi-organizational project delivery team was formed to identify critical operations and a document was created providing guidance to restart field activities consistent with Department of Health guidance. Harter created template letters for PennDOT districts to notify consultants of construction inspection and design fieldwork that could resume. Firms were asked to submit COVID-19 Safety Plans, and Harter led a team responsible for the
review and acceptance of 128 statewide safety plans. PennDOT faced a cash flow crisis as motor license fund revenues declined, and a difficult decision was made to pause construction lettings due to these shortfalls. A Cash Flow Team was established, and Harter led a sub-team responsible to provide graphical representations of actual and projected revenues and expenditures in various appropriations. Summary information provided current and projected cash flow, ultimately supporting a restart of the letting program. Harter was also a Governor’s Award of Excellence finalist in 2020 and was nominated by the Depart-
ment of Labor and Industry for her extraordinary work. She tackled all special assignments while leading the Contract Management Section within the Bureau of Project Delivery and assisted with specification changes, Risk Allocation Committee items, On the Job Training (OJT) System rollout, ECMS activities, consultant agreement concerns, and other initiatives. The Star of Excellence Awards are presented annually to employees who represent the department’s values of service, performance, and integrity. Readers may subscribe to PennDOT news in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties at www.penndot.gov/District8.

Feeding Pennsylvania Sets Fundraising Campaign Feeding Pennsylvania is teaming up with PA Eats and Breweries in PA this November for a monthlong fundraising campaign, Hops for Hunger, to raise funds for Pennsylvanians facing hunger. As part of the inaugural Hops for Hunger program, people are invited to visit participating breweries during the month of November, and the businesses will donate proceeds from a beer of their choice, host special events, and more to engage their guests about the issue of hunger in Pennsylvania. Events will be

announced and updated at www.feedingpa.org/hops forhunger. Local participants include The Vegetable Hunter, Harrisburg; Lovedrafts Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; Pour Man’s Brewing Company, Ephrata; Moo-Duck Brewery, Elizabethtown; Our Town Brewery, Lancaster; Wolf Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; and Desperate Times Brewery, Carlisle. The concept of the campaign came from Feeding Pennsylvania’s community manager, Corinne Foster, who doubles as a Central Pennsyl-
vania food blogger, Fosterthefoodie. Through her food blog, Foster incorporates different ways of partnering with local restaurants on promotions that encourage individuals to support local restaurants while raising awareness and funds to support anti-hunger efforts. This once-localized approach eventually sparked an idea to take these efforts statewide. PA Eats joined the campaign because of its mission of showcasing Pennsylvania food culture. Breweries in Pennsylvania
also played a key role in outreach for the inaugural event, with a combined total of more than 60,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram. The plan is to use these platforms to share upcoming events, specials, and promotions for the Hops for Hunger campaign to help promote this year’s participating breweries. Breweries that are interested in participating can join the campaign throughout November. For more information on how to get involved, visit www.feedingpa.org/our -programs/hopsforhunger/join.

Artwork from the collection of the late Raymonde “Ré” DeSabres Plaut was offered. DeSabres Plaut loved both art and animals, and one of her final wishes was for her art collection to benefit these two causes. Not only was DeSabres Plaut well-known as the owner of The Four Winds gallery in Harrisburg, but she was also a long-time exhibit-

Her collection of artworks brought more than $16,000, which was split between the Art Association of Harrisburg and the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.
