Holiday Grief Workshop Set

All Saints Episcopal Church, 310 Elm Ave., Hershey, will host “‘Tis the Season: Caring for Ourselves During the Holidays” on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. in the parish hall.

“‘Tis the Season: Caring for Ourselves During the Holidays” will focus on coping with grief during significant times; caring for oneself; and planning, preparing, and implementing strategies for coping with grief, tailored for individual needs. Along the way, the presenter, Anne Burgess, will share stories to illustrate her ideas.

Anne, a widow at 51, studied grief extensively, resulting in her reconciliation of her husband’s death and helping others through local, state, national, and international presentations.

Anne, who is a native of North Carolina, and her current husband, Cliff, arrived in Pennsylvania recently to be closer to some of their children. Anne retired from the University of Southern Mississippi as an associate professor of child and family studies after obtaining her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from UNC Greensboro and East Carolina University and her doctorate in adult education from Kansas State University. In their retirement, she and Cliff enjoy traveling, reading, and visiting their grandchildren.

Anne uses Cliff’s photographs to illustrate stories she writes for their grandchildren. For more information or to register, visit www .all saints38.com or search for @allsaints38 on Facebook.

Helping Children To Serve Others

Volunteering is a widespread activity, with participants coming from all walks of life and various age groups. Parents and guardians may want to introduce their children to volunteerism, and even very young children can participate. Dr. Joseph F. Hagan Jr., a clinical professor of pediatrics at Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, said that helping others during the toddler and preschool years helps to shape a child’s sense of morality.

Adults should focus on finding the right activity to match a child’s age. For example, a 3- or 4-year-old can fill bags or boxes with donated food or help gather blankets and towels to donate to an animal rescue. However, a toddler or preschooler may not have the stamina to complete a 5K walk.

Volunteerism does not even have to be carried out in the traditional sense of working with an established charity. A youngster can pick flowers and deliver them to an elderly neighbor. A preschooler can invite a child playing alone to come play together with him or her. A toddler who loves sorting items can help sort recycling items at home and watch a parent deliver them to the recycling center.

Another way to engage kids in volunteer work is to match their interests with the tasks. Many kids cannot get enough of animals, so they may want to help an animal organization or be involved with a conservation group. A child can collect change to “adopt” an endangered species.

Kids also can visit a children’s hospital and deliver gifts to youngsters battling illnesses. In such situations, children may be more engaged if they can help others their own age.

Children can begin volunteering at a young age, and finding the right fit can inspire a lifetime of giving back.

for those who would not like a goodie bag and those who would. The goodie bag will contain Frosty 5 knit gloves with palm grip and touchscreen fingers, as well as Frosty 5 crew socks.

Proceeds will benefit the Middletown Area Historical Society’s mission to collect, preserve, and teach about the history of Middletown, Dauphin County, and the surrounding area.

Readers who would like additional information may email mahs17057@gmail.com.

Wonder, amazement and joy all live in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library for several weeks in November and December. Those are just some of the emotions Craig Coble witnesses when people come to see the display laid out by The Train Guys.

“For the kids, it’s a lot of big-eyed wonderment at things they’ve never seen before,” said Coble. “The expressions I get to see on the kids’ faces are great. And then the older crowd gets misty eyed, remembering trains from their childhood.”

For the first time since 2019, The Train Guys will operate their display at the library, 10 S. Market St., beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. “That night coincides with the Elizabethtown Christmas tree lighting, so people can come see the trains when they come to that,” Coble noted.

“And it’s also our first respon-

ders’ night, so we’re inviting all first responders to come see the trains.”

The Train Guys begin setting up the layouts in midOctober, Coble explained, noting that the core group includes about 20 volunteers.

“One of things that sets us apart is we have 50 push buttons throughout the room that people can use to start trains and operate accessories,” Coble stated.

He noted that the group sets up the display not just to entertain visitors, but also to support the library. “Most of the folks in our group have a strong incentive to give back to our community,” he shared, noting that proceeds from suggested donations for admission as well as a silent auction and giveaway drawing at the display benefit the library.

As visitors enter the display from the hallway, they can enjoy a circus and amusement park scene, and they’ll be greeted by costumed characters, including a railroad hobo,

police officer and engineer.

Once inside the room, they’ll see a display that features up to 20 trains running at once, through everything from urban to rural landscapes. “We even have dignitaries who visit from time to time,” Coble said, pointing out Laurel and Hardy waiting on a train platform.

Elizabethtown’s past can be found throughout the layout, including the old schoolhouse that now houses the Elizabethtown Historical Society and a ballfield replica of the one used by the Klein Chocolate Company team. One area of the display features standard-gauge trains, which Coble pointed out are very unusual to see in operation. “We only bring these out about every three years or so,” he stated. “These train cars are up to 100 years old.” The display ends with garden-scale trains set up on the floor on an indoor/outdoor carpet.

Musical Christmas Tour To Stop At Hershey’s Giant Center

Multi-Grammy Award winning recording artist Bill Gaither and Christian events producer Premier Productions have announced plans to bring “The Brighter The Light Tour” Christmas tour to seven cities in December. One of those stops will be at the Giant Center in Hershey on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. For more than 25 years,

Gaither has been bringing Christmas concert events each holiday season to cities nationwide, and many of those events have been promoted by Premier Productions. This year’s celebration will include Gaither’s own multi-award winning group, The Gaither Vocal Band.

During “The Brighter The Light Tour,” the Gospel Music

Hall of Fame members will ring in the holidays with joyful harmonies and signature stylings.

The Gaither Vocal Band, featuring Gaither, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb, Todd Suttles and Reggie Smith, will be joined on this season’s Christmas tour by several musical guests.

on setting up the layout, the trains offer entertainment and fun. “I like pushing the buttons,” he said. “I like the light-up stuff and I like watching the trains run. It’s just cool.”

The Train Guys will operate the display on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December from 6 to 7:30 p.m. as well as from 5 to 7 p.m. on Second Friday, Dec. 9. The display will also operate on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., when a shuttle will be offered between the library display and a train display at Masonic Village. Rolling On The Court

Basketball in her hands, Dakota Nesbitt races down the court, dodging opponents on her way to the basket. As Dakota navigates the drill during basketball practice, she’s on a roll - literally.

The 7-year-old second-grader at Bucher Elementary School in the Manheim Township School District is a member of a newly formed wheelchair basketball team. The team, coached by Keith McMinn, practices on Friday nights at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

Keith held the first practice in October, and so far, the team has about 15 players, ranging in age from 7 to 17. They come from Lancaster, Harrisburg and York.

Keith saw the benefits of basketball firsthand when his daughter, Samantha, joined a wheelchair basketball team in

Maryland, where they used to live. “She’s been playing since she was 6 years old,” Keith said, of his now-21-year-old daughter. “The sport changed the trajectory of her life.” Keith and his wife, Sandy, noticed that being a part of the team helped Samantha increase her self-esteem, expanded her social life and led to academic improvement.

Originally from this area, Keith and Sandy moved back when Keith took a job as the director of Life Lion at Penn State Health. A retired Maryland state trooper, Keith had coached basketball and baseball before, and he knew local kids would benefit from a wheelchair basketball team, especially since Samantha’s team had players who traveled from Pennsylvania to participate. He connected with Janetta Green of the

There is currently no cost for participants thanks to a sponsor who is covering court time at Spooky Nook. It’s an expensive sport to play, however, since players use special wheelchairs with cambered wheels for improved maneuverability. Each chair costs about $5,000, Keith said. He has been able to purchase some and some players have received chairs through grants, but the team is looking for sponsors to purchase more chairs.

For many of the players, this is their first experience in the sport chairs. “It’s a gamechanger for them once they get in one of these chairs,” Keith commented. “Their faces just light up.”

For almost all of the players, it’s also their first time playing basketball.

“No experience is needed,” said Sara Echegoyen, a junior at Manheim Central High School. “You don’t have to be a great basketball player. Everyone is really nice and

Dakota’s dad, Drew, said he loves watching his daughter on the court. “She’s a little bit competitive, and she loves to go fast,” he said, noting that Dakota used to travel to Maryland to play, but he’s happy to have a team closer to home. “This is a phenomenal outlet for her. It’s opened up a lot of doors for her.”

Keith spends part of each practice going over basketball drills and rules while encouraging each player to understand what he or she brings to the team. He plans to begin playing games against other teams in February, starting with the team in Maryland.

He noted that much more is happening on the court than just a sport. “We try to teach life skills - independence, focus, teamwork, sportsmanship,” Keith remarked. “We emphasize that this is about fun and fitness. The basketball is a bonus.”
