According to Coble, the Train Guys raise approximately $10,000 for the library each year. To see past years’ displays and previews for this year, readers may search for “The Train Guys” on YouTube. Masonic Village, which is home to the MV&E Model Railroad Club, has provided a free shuttle bus service that will transport visitors to and from the Masonic Village Health Care Center, 1 Masonic Drive, and the Elizabethtown Public Library. The shuttle will run on a continuous loop when the MV&E train display is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. On these days, the last shuttle back to Masonic Village will leave the library at 3:45 p.m. The MV&E display will also be open to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Admission is by donation. Signposts on the grounds of Masonic Village provide directions to the Model Railroad Club. MV&E hosts open houses throughout the year to showcase its breathtaking miniature train display, which is home to seven operating gauges: Z, N, HO, S, G, and standard scales, as well as three-rail O scale. Plus, visitors will be wowed by Oscale trolleys running along two rails with overhead power and details including an ornate replica of the iconic Star Barn and its outbuildings. Club member Bill Fishel noted that the trains are all operated under an automatic control system and not run by computers. The operating
system was conceived by member Mel Fisher, a B&O Railroad retiree. The club celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018, and members are continually enhancing the enormous layout. Two cameras allow visitors to see big-screen views of the trains on the move. Member Frederick Wuestner explained that one camera features an adjustable height monitor for handicapped-accessibility. “Someone with a wheelchair can enjoy it just as much as anyone else,” Wuestner pointed out. Interactive buttons - one of which will set off smoke in a control tower surrounded by fire engines - have also been added to the display in the past year. For more details on the train displays, readers may visit www.etownpublic library.org or www.mvemodelrrclub.com.
The Train Guys set up an elaborate interactive miniature train display in the basement of the Elizabethtown Public Library for the month of December, with proceeds from admission benefiting the library. Masonic Village will offer a free shuttle service between the library and the MV&E Model Railroad Club on Dec. 1, 8, and 15.

Life Connection Church, 1380 Park Drive, Palmyra, will host a program of gospel music and testimony by the Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge Choir on Sunday, Dec. 2. The program will begin at 10 a.m., with a free dinner following. The choir consists of men from across the United States, each of whom has a background that includes drugs, alcohol, and/or crime. Each member testifies to the miracle-working power of God’s love. The choir represents almost 200 students residing at the Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge Center in Rehrersburg. The nonprofit rehabilitation program has more than 200 induction centers
in the United States and has a documented 86 percent cure rate. The choir has shared its presentation of music and testimony in churches, prisons, schools, and coffee houses, as well as on street corners, military bases, the radio, and television. The group has appeared in Washington, D.C., on the steps of the Capitol and at the Washington Monument, as well as in Philadelphia at the Liberty Bell and Independence Square. It has also appeared on The 700 Club and has performed the national anthem at major and minor league ballparks. The community is invited to attend the program.
breakfast with Santa Claus in the Star Barn from 8 to 10 a.m. Gifts from Santa will also be included with VIP admission. To purchase general admission or VIP tickets, interested individuals may visit www.brittanyshope.org/christmas/. A limited number of VIP tickets are available, so organizers encourage interested individuals to register while supplies last. Food and beverages will be available to purchase throughout the day for an additional cost, along with tickets to enter to win various giveaways. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, explained that funds raised through Christmas at the Star Barn Village will go toward building an adaptive living facility for children with disabilities in Vietnam. According to Sahd, Brittany’s Hope has been working with Ha Tinh Village, an orphanage located in a remote rural region of northern Vietnam, to help provide basic living needs for more than 50 abandoned children. Currently, the orphanage has a separate area for children with profound mental and/or physical disabilities. Sahd noted that in
Vietnam, children with disabilities can be left with nowhere to go and nowhere to find dignity. The portion of Ha Tinh Village devoted to housing children with disabilities is in need of upgrades, and Brittany’s Hope has pledged $100,000 to build a facility specifically designed for those with special needs at Ha Tinh Village. Plans for the new facility include a safe living space and bedrooms for up to 28 children, specialized adaptive furniture and bathrooms, a fully equipped physical therapy room, and a common area for the children to move and play. The funds will also allow for trained professionals to help the youths to develop living skills and a nursing station to provide medical care around the clock. Sahd noted that 100 percent of donations toward the project will go directly toward the Ha Tinh Village building project, because all non-program expenses such as fundraising and overhead are covered by a corporate benefactor. To learn more about the work of Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittanyshope.org.

Holiday Card Drive Planned Cards and coloring pages for area military veterans are being collected through Tuesday, Dec. 4, as part of the American Red Cross’ “Holidays for Heroes” program. Cards may be dropped off at any Royer’s Flowers and Gifts location during normal business hours. Free coloring pages are available at the stores or can be downloaded at www.royers.com/holidaymail. The Red Cross advises those
preparing cards to use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member,” as cards addressed to specific individuals cannot be delivered through this program. Individuals should also include messages of support and thanks, sign their name to the cards, avoid including letters or other personal information, and refrain from choosing cards with glitter.
