Hayden To Retire From SFMS The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) of Harrisburg has announced that its longtime executive director, Jess Hayden, will retire, effective Friday, Dec. 31. Hayden has served as SFMS’ executive director for the past 20 years. During this time, she has helped to expand what was already a robust organization by more than tripling its fiscal size and programming activity. She has taken SFMS from its roots in the Harrisburg area and has grown it substantially by adding events in neighboring York and Lancaster counties, including partnerships with York County Libraries and the Ware Center. Her most recent accomplishments have been creating the Susquehanna Folk Festival, a summer celebration of traditional arts; establishing SFMS as the region’s Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Folk Arts Center; and developing a wideranging slate of online programming during the coronavirus pandemic.
Gish’s Furniture Announces Grand Reopening Gish’s Furniture & Mattress recently announced the grand reopening of its expanded showroom at the flagship store, 3424 Simpson Ferry Road, Camp Hill. The addition brings the total showroom size to nearly 19,000 square feet. It includes modern additions to each category: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms and mattresses. There’s also an area dedicated to furniture that’s “available now.” The addition includes a newly designed TempurPedic mini showroom and an expanded Smith Brothers of Berne upholstery gallery, as well as realistic dining room and bedroom vignettes so customers can discover options that complement their home. Gish’s Furniture is an Amish furniture retailer. Founded in 2003 by Michael and Teresa Gish, the store provides heirloom-quality handcrafted, solid hardwood furniture, custom-made by Amish craftsmen, along with American-made upholstery and mattresses. For more information, visit www.facebook .com/GishsFurniture or www.gishs.com.
Hayden grew up in a musical family. Her father, a music teacher who could play just about anything, decided to put together a family folk band. Traveling around to fairs and festivals as a member of the Dalton Family Singers fostered Hayden’s lifelong love of folk music. She studied at Interlochen Arts Academy, an arts high school in Michigan, and then earned her bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College and her master’s degree from Penn State Harrisburg. She taught for the West Shore School District in the Harrisburg area and was an active SFMS volunteer and board member before becoming SFMS’ executive director. Hayden has played the clarinet with several musical groups, including Old World Folk Band and West Shore Symphony Orchestra. Over 36 years, the SFMS has presented hundreds of folk music and dance events featuring artists from around
the globe as well as hometown performers. Those events range from jams, coffeehouses and intimate workshops to concerts and dances to big summer festivals. SFMS’ programming is recognized and supported by many funding sources, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Cultural Alliance of York County.

HCPAC To Perform “Newsies” Harrisburg Christian Performing Arts Center, 1000 S. Eisenhower Blvd., Middletown, will host performances of Disney’s “Newsies” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, and Saturday, Dec. 4, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, “Newsies” is the tale of Jack Kelly, a newsboy and leader of a band of teenage “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the news-
boys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, “Newsies” features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. It features songs such as “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe.” To purchase tickets, visit https://thehcpac.org/shows/.

Long is a senior majoring in prekindergarten through fourth-grade/early childhood education. Long received the scholarship for her leadership skills and civic involvement on campus, including her work as a
member of the Social Justice Task Force and Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Upon graduating from LHU, Long plans to pursue a master’s degree with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher and coach.
many to be the next step after a student graduates from high school. Saving for college can start early, and there are various vehicles for families to explore. Finding ways to pay for higher education has long been a goal for students and their families. In fact, due to the high cost of college, some families start setting aside funds for their children’s college education soon after their children are born. No matter the situation, taking steps to plan and save helps to make schooling more affordable. One option is a 529 college savings plan. A 529 is a specialized savings account for college and university costs. Most plans can be opened by a U.S. citizen or resident alien age 18 and older. The individual opening the account can be a parent, grandparent, cousin, or even a friend. The student is the beneficiary of the account. Four-year schools, community colleges and vocational/trade schools accept 529 accounts as payment sources. The only requirement is that the school must participate
programs. Another option is an education savings account (ESA), also known as an Education IRA. Financial experts at Ramsey Solutions say an ESA works like a Roth IRA, but it is designed specifically for education expenses. Individuals can invest up to $2,000 after tax per year, per child. The account grows tax-free. The rate of growth varies based on investments in the account. An ESA also can be used to pay for kindergarten through 12th-grade private school tuition, school supplies, tutoring, or textbooks. It also can be transferred to a sibling if the money is not needed for a particular student. A third option is a UTMA/UGMA plan. This plan is different from ESAs and 529s because it is not specifically designed for college savings. The Uniform Transfer/Gift to Minors Act account is in the child’s name but is controlled by a guardian until the child reaches age 18 or 21. This mutual fund account can be used to save for college with reduced taxes, or funds can be used for other expenses, such

Another substitution is using thick Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise or sour cream in creamy and tangy foods like potato salad and coleslaw. Greek yogurt adds live and active cultures that can improve gut health, and it also cuts down on the calories and fat in the recipe. Greek yogurt also can be used in onion or vegetable dips for snack platters. Cooking with the right pans can make foods more nutri-
tious, as well. Cast-iron, nonstick or enamel-coated pans and skillets require less oil or butter to prevent foods from sticking. When it comes to seasoning, people can replace salt with other herbs and spices that can add flavor without extra sodium. In addition, they should always taste the recipe before adding more salt, as it may be fine without it, suggests Harvard Medical School. Tweaking recipes can make it possible to enjoy one’s favorite foods without sacrificing nutrition.
Avoiding Fire Risks During The Holidays The holiday season presents various fire risks as homes are lit with Christmas lights and candles and people cook seasonal dishes on the stove. To diminish the fire risks associated with the festive season, people may take the following steps. First, electrical outlets should not be overtaxed. Electrical circuits are designed to handle a limited amount of electricity, and exceeding the rated load for the circuit wiring causes the circuit breaker to trip, shutting off the power to the entire cir-

tle more nutritious. One healthier method of cooking is using an air fryer. With the crispy coating and juicy interior of foods made through regular frying come the addition of fat and calories from the oil. Air fryers can simulate the benefits of deep frying without these negative side effects. An air fryer uses heat and air (convection) to mimic the results of deep frying with little to no oil. Home cooks may also ditch the cream in dishes like fettuccine alfredo. Using low-fat milk that is thickened with
cuit. Christmas lighting adds to the overall fire risk unless used correctly. Extension cords should be used only when necessary. Second, cables should never be run underneath carpets. If sockets on one side of the room are in use, individuals should not be tempted to run cables from another socket underneath a rug or carpet. When people walk over the cables, they compress and break down the cables’ insulation, increasing the fire risk. Third, candles should be positioned away from decora-
tions. Placing candles around the Christmas tree may add to the festive décor, but this practice is not safe. Candles should always be placed on a stable surface away from the tree, decorations, and soft furnishings. It is important that candles never be left unattended, and lighters should be put away after being used. After lighting candles, matches should be allowed to cool in a metal or ceramic dish before they are thrown away. Fourth, candles should be swapped for LED versions.
Faux candles are a great substitute for the real thing if someone lives in a home with young children and pets who could potentially knock them over. Fifth, the tree should not be placed close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame, or sparks. Smokers should be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. A real tree should not be put up too early or left up for longer than two weeks.
Eco-friendly Holiday Tips Green is not just a festive color this holiday season. The color may also remind people to be more eco-friendly when celebrating and shopping for gifts. Rebecca Gramuglia, consumer expert at TopCashback.com, has offered tips for being more eco-friendly without breaking the bank this holiday season. Before throwing out plastic or glass bottles or shipping boxes from holiday shopping, people can see if there is another use for them. These items can be repurposed as
vases, pencil holders, storage bins, or even a new playhouse for children. People can even organize a DIY Secret Santa with friends where all items are repurposed, with a small budget for craft supplies. When looking for an ugly Christmas sweater for an office party or a pair of snow pants to wear when sledding with family members, shoppers should give their local thrift store a try. Before buying items, people should check the items for any tears
or stains. Shoppers should always hold onto items they may buy but have not yet decided on; otherwise, they may not return to it until another shopper has picked it up. Shoppers are reminded that thrift stores offer more than clothes. They may offer toys, movies, books, or even glassware sets and electronics. When decorating this holiday season, people should consider investing in LED string lights. LED bulbs offer the brightest light for the least
amount of money. If people plan to travel over the holidays, they should unplug their appliances before departing or opt to use a power strip. A power strip can cut the electricity with the flip of a switch, and people may find it more convenient to shut off a power strip rather than to pull plugs out of the socket in hard-toreach places. Through these strategies, people may be able to save money and help the environment this holiday season.

The Pennsylvania Treasury has advised state residents that scammers are using fraudulent text messages to target recipients of unemployment compensation benefits, potentially including normal unemployment compensation (UC), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), and Federal Pandemic Unemploy-
ment Compensation (FPUC). One message inaccurately tells recipients that their state-issued ReliaCard account has been temporarily frozen. The message then encourages recipients to clink on a link to verify their identity and card status. Individuals should not click on the link. Neither the
Pennsylvania Treasury nor the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry ever embed a link in a text message. Any text that includes a link and claims to be from these agencies should not be trusted. Individuals should note that it is important to never provide any personally iden-
tifiable information, user IDs, or passwords unless they initiated the conversation by contacting the agency directly. A copy of the full news release from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department is available at www.patreasury.gov by clicking on Newsroom and then the Scam Alert article.
