Lions Provide Hurricane Relief Amidst COVID-19 conditions, the Hershey Lions Club continues to help others. While traditional meetings, service projects, and fundraisers have been paused, the Hershey Lions Club continues to support the residents of Derry Township, as well as others across the United States and globally. Recently, the club partnered with other Lions Clubs across Pennsylvania and donated needed items for the residents of the Lake Charles, La., area impacted by Hurricane Laura as well as subsequent hurricanes and storms. In August, Hurricane Laura made landfall as a Category 4 storm with winds up to 150 miles per hour. Several people were reported dead, over 50,000 residents were displaced due to flooding, and many lacked power and water. Lions in that area and beyond

Former Knee Pain Sufferer Shares: “I was looking at surgery…But now there’s no need.”

Chatter Tonya Bibb • 717-623-2767 tkcondran@gmail.com

Happy holidays, everyone! Oooooooh, I LOVE this time of the year! All my childhood memories of Christmas just lift me so high ... the blue lights that outlined Grandma and Grandpa’s house, the smell of Nan’s cookies baking, the way the snow glistened in the moonlight, the way we decorated the whole house, the special items we only got out this time of the year, all the presents under the tree. I remember the car rides we used to take to look at the Christmas lights on all the houses ... my grandma would say, “Look at that one, kids,” and we kids would always ooh and aah at every house we saw. That was so much fun. I miss those days, but now I am trying to make memories for all the kids in my family. **Looking for an Angel** One of my sweet readers, Kim of Middletown, was in a bad car accident at Frey and Vine streets on Wednesday, Nov. 4, early in the morning. Kim tells me a very nice woman helped get her out of her car and stayed with her until the ambulance came. Kim would really like to thank this person but wasn’t able to at the time. All that she remembers is that she had maybe shoulder-length dark hair. If you are Kim’s angel, please call me (717-623-2767) and I will give you Kim’s phone number. She would really like to thank you! And thank you from all of us for being such a caring, wonderful person! I Corinthians 13, Christmas Version If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show

love to my family, it profits me nothing. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend myriad holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens. Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can’t. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But giving the gift of love will endure. BFB This week’s Big Fat Belated birthday wish goes out to Lydia O’Hazzo of Hershey! This sweet young woman turned 90 on Nov. 27. Happy birthday, Lydia! I hope your year is blessed beyond belief! Happy Birthdays First for this week, I must wish the love of my life a very happy birthday! If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, December 16th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Lower Paxton. If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. “Had trouble walking through the woods while shooting archery. I am now able to walk without tripping on branches and up and down stairs. I had a problem lifting my right leg and getting up from the floor while sitting. Now I can get up with no problem!” - Rich A. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call Heather at 717-210-9945 today. Tell her you would like to “Save your seat for the Knee Pain Workshop.” To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 20 seats… and seats fill up FAST. The first 10 registrants will receive a FREE copy of the Top 3 Exercises for Knee Pain when they come to the workshop. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and helping you become your “normal self” again. Chad Madden Physical Therapist R066084

Foundation, Businesses Announce Scholarships Bridge Educational Foundation and its donors, Chubb, M&T Bank, Malady & Wooten, Waste Management and Weis Markets, announced $100,000 in scholarships for Cumberland County and Dauphin County families. The scholarship donations are

part of the kindergarten through 12th-grade and prekindergarten Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) programs. Students attending the following central Pennsylvania schools will benefit from the tuition scholarships: St. Joan of Arc,

Harrisburg Academy, Harrisburg Catholic Elementary, Londonderry School, Nativity School, Seven Sorrows BVM, The Silver Academy, St. Catherine Laboure, St. Margaret Mary, St. Patrick, St. Stephen’s Episcopal, and Trinity Schools. Pennsylvania’s EITC program will celebrate two decades in 2021. The publicprivate partnership funds tuition scholarships that can help to keep students in the schools that best fit their needs and allow new families the financial help to choose the best school to fit their family’s changing needs. Thousands of Pennsylvania businesses participate in the EITC program, and hundreds more remain on a waiting list for the tax credits. Families in every county of Pennsylvania benefit from EITC scholarships. For information on the Bridge Educational Foundation and how to request scholarship funding, readers may visit www.bridgeedu.org.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School students Cordelina Moritz (left) and Hudson Moritz thank Weis Markets for helping to fund scholarships through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program.

Planning Commission Receives Grant The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) approved a $37,500 grant to the TriCounty Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) to provide an updated online planning toolkit of model ordinances and reference materials. The purpose of the toolkit is to better enable municipalities across the region and around the state to address

planning-level issues such as affordable housing, redevelopment, and rural development in consistent and effective ways. The funds are provided through DCED’s 2020-21 Municipal Assistance Program. TCRPC’s current planning toolkit, located at www.tcrpc -pa.org/planning-toolkit, offers a wide variety of techniques and policies that promote Smart Growth princi-

ples. The toolkit includes links to resources, research materials and model ordinances on a range of topics, including building stock, cultural resources, infrastructure, land development, open spaces, and transportation. TCRPC plans to update and significantly improve these resources and make the toolkit easier for municipalities and others to use.

Residents Win Wool Garment Competition Local residents were recently honored in the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest. The state contest was held in October, and a virtual fashion show and awards program was held on Oct. 31. Due to the pandemic, the contest was held in a virtual and mail-in format. Contestants shipped or hand-delivered their ensembles. They also provided a video that showed them modeling their garments and answering a few questions typical of in-person judging. They also provided still photos of their ensemble. Each entrant’s ensemble was flat-judged and then judged while being modeled by the entrant on video. Judging was based on poise, construction of the garment, fit and wearability, and promotion of the versatility of wool. The judges were Debby Spence, a dressmaker in Lancaster, and Pat Hetrick, a retired family and consumer sciences educator from Ephrata.

D DON’T FORGET TTHE BATTERIES!

Winners included Julia Schreiner, first place in the Adult category, for people age 25 and up; Veronique Riviello, second place, Pre-Teen category, for children age 12 and under; Alexandria Neff, third place, Junior category, for youths ages 13 to 16; and Sheila Martin, third place, Adult. First-place winners will send their garments, with photos and a video, for national judging in January. The objectives of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; and to develop life skills, including being responsible for one’s self, being a good sport, accepting judges’ decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity. Each entrant constructed at least one wool or wool-blend garment using knitting, crocheting, and/or

sewing skills. Schreiner, from Penryn, created a two-piece ensemble. Her straight-cut, tan and black plaid skirt is cut below the knee and features a sewnin slip for added comfort. It has an invisible zipper and faced waistline with a pleated lower back, and the pleats are cut on the bias. Her coordinating vest utilizes three different wools, bound buttonholes, piping, decorative stitching, and buttons. The vest pattern was cut from an actual garment rather than a commercial pattern. Riviello, from Birdsboro, is a first-time participant in Make It With Wool. Mentored by her great-aunt and her grandmother, she made a wool crepe dress. Riviello and her mentors chose to make a navy blue garment, but remove some of the color to create a gradient. Riviello made a practice muslin to test the pattern that they designed together. The dress

has facings and a handstitched hem. Neff ’s entry was a threepiece ensemble made as her eighth-year sewing project in the Dauphin County 4-H program. The lined coat is a midnight blue twill with ruffles, invisible pockets, and three buttons in the front. The lined, pleated skirt is made of 95% wool grey fabric and has a zipper closure. For her vest, Neff spun and plied yarn from grey and white Romney and Merino fleeces. She then wove the fabric into a zig-zag pattern. Martin, of Birdsboro, created a blue coat with a modern silhouette. Called a car coat in the 1950s, this three-quarterlength style is now known as a swing coat. The sharkskin blend used by Martin is 85% wool and 15% silk. Her coat features front origami pockets, raglan sleeves, traditional lapels, and one designer button. Recently retired, Sheila is a first-time Make It With Wool participant.

Alexandria Neff was the third-place winner in the Junior category.

Sheila Martin won third place in the Adult category.
