Hospice Labor Day Auction To Be Held Virtually By Francine Fulton
Traditionally, Hospice & Community Care (HCC) holds its annual Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, and the event features nearly 10,000 items on the auction block and a variety of food selections sold on-site. Nearly 3,500 people attend the two-day event annually. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and See Labor Day Auction pg 3

40 Years Of Smooth Salin’ The Wilshire Hills community west of Lancaster city has undergone changes over the past four decades, but one thing has stayed the same - the commitment to hosting a neighborhood yard sale. “This is the 40th annual sale,” said organizer Cheryl Schmidt. “We are trying to re-engage our community to come together and support one another, especially at this time.” The yard sale was started by the Wilshire Hills Civic Organization, with Mary Coldren at the helm. The committee began planning in February each year, and the group’s hard work paid off with high attendance. Neighbors noted that people from other municipalities would eagerly await the sale, and the streets would be packed with vehicles. See Wilshire Hills pg 2

Expo To Offer Youths Venue To Show, Sell Livestock

The majority of the bolts in a typical fabric store will be filled with natural fibers like cotton or manufactured fibers like polyester. However, there is usually at least one section dedicated to wool, and garments made from those fabrics are the focus of the annual Make It With Wool contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association. The contest is designed to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. “Wool is a wonderful fiber to work with,” said director Linda Siegel of Lebanon. “You can steam and mold it into shape.” She noted that wool fabric is not always derived from sheep’s wool, and it can be used for more than heavy winter coats. “I enjoy finding lightweight wools I can wear year-round,” Linda said. “I made a light wool crepe black dress that I can wear with sandals in the summer and feel comfortable.”
Like it has with so many other events, the coronavirus has disrupted fair season. For some people, that simply means fewer milkshakes consumed or carnival games enjoyed. However, for the youths who raise animals to exhibit and subsequently sell, the cancellation of fairs means a significant loss of income.
“Most of the livestock had been bought before COVID. These kids have all this money wrapped up in these animals,” said cattleman Jevin Kready, who noted that because specific finish weights are required, livestock must be sold within the timeframes set at the time of purchase. The Kready family has years of experience in raising, showing, and selling livestock. As a 4-H and FFA member, Jevin began showing beef cattle in middle school, occasionally raising some pigs as well, and he has been in charge of the See Livestock Expo pg 6
The Old Line Youth Livestock Expo will be held on Aug. 22 to 24 to give young people, such as (from left) Madelyn Tedesco, Alex Tedesco, Waylon Kready with Mischief, Kolton Youndt with Diesel, and Kayden Youndt, an opportunity to exhibit and sell their market animals.

Cara Weil of Lancaster placed second in adult division in the state Make It With Wool contest last year. The deadline to enter the 2020 event is Sept. 4.

“Over the years, the word spread - not just to the city but all over the county - that this was a decent yard sale. It was safe, and people liked the things for sale. They were good deals, resident Bob McCune commented. When Schmidt and her family moved to Wilshire Hills 15 years ago, the majority of the residents were age 75 and older. The median age dropped as younger families with small children moved in. Simultaneously, participation in the yard sale slowly decreased. “It is our hope that with increased promotion and a renewed sense of passion in organization, we will see that rate increase, Schmidt said. Resident Vanessa Crowl shared that it was Coldren’s belief that keeping the yard sale dates the same every year was crucial to its success. The 2020 sale was delayed by several months, however. “We were obliged to change the dates and times to respect the current pandemic and work schedules of those involved, Crowl explained. “We are grateful for those in the civic association and annual yard sale committees for all the years of community commitment and involvement. This year’s yard sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday’s sale was given a later start date to appeal to
Linda entered the Make It With Wool contest for the first time as a 4-H member in 1972. She still has the suit made from fabric striped with acid blue, teal green, and cream. “There was a lot of competition, she recalled. “A lot of people were sewing in the ’70s. Home sewing has declined in popularity since then, but it is seeing a resurgence. Linda has been actively promoting sewing by serving as a 4-H leader for the past two decades. Additionally, she has encouraged the sewing passion of her daughter, Rachel. In about 2002 at age 13, Rachel won the state 4-H fashion revue with a Melton wool coat and subtly striped pants and then won the state Make It With Wool contest with the same outfit. That made Rachel eligible to compete at the national Make It With Wool event. “She didn’t place there, but she learned, Linda said. “From then on, she sewed with wool in 4-H and challenged herself. Before she turned 25 and matriculated into the adult age division, Rachel competed at the national event seven times. As an adult, she has had one outfit win and two others place. “Rachel got to see a lot of the country that way, Linda said. “Sometimes she knew who the judges were, like the year she was in the elevator with (television sewing instructor) Sandra Betzina and (couture sewing expert) Claire Shaeffer was a judge. At least six of Linda’s 4-H students have competed nationally, and she has been a state winner twice. She accepted the position of state director this year after the previous director, Tammy Hemmerly, moved to Florida. “I enjoy organizing things (and) helping people learn new things. I hope I can get more people interested in working with wool, Linda commented, adding that she hopes to get more youths involved. “I encourage people to try it, even if it’s just a simple skirt or

a knitted garment that makes them happy, Linda commented. “Don’t choose (a pattern) beyond your skill level. Start with what you’ve made (before) and add a few new skills. Linda recommended buying good-quality fabric that is more forgiving, such as flannel or a light or medium tweed, in colors that the sewist enjoys or complements their skin tone. Fasteners should be appropriate - e.g., an invisible zipper is most likely not appropriate for a heavier wool - and the seams should have some kind of finish. To avoid creating a shine on the fabric, always use a press cloth. Towels wrapped around rolled-up newspapers can be used in place of a sleeve roll when pressing curved portions of a garment. The contest is open to anyone age 8 and older. All participants must select, construct, and model their own garments unless entering the “made for others category. All garments must have been completed in the current year. Every fashion fabric or yarn used must be at least 60% wool or specialty wool fiber, which includes alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna. There is a cost to participate; however, every participant will receive 1.5 yards of wool fabric and a variety of sewing notions such as pressing hams and books on tailoring. Friday, Sept. 4, has been set as the deadline to register for the competition, and entries must be received no later than Tuesday, Oct. 20. Typically, the contest is held in Harrisburg in conjunction with the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, but that event has been canceled. To request an entry form or to learn more about the state contest, readers may contact Linda at Linda@ lebaweb.com or 717-274-1197. Individuals may also visit www.makeitwithwool.com for information about the national event.

the evening work crowd, Schmidt said, adding, “(We) encourage people to come out and support the local food trucks as well. Previous yard sales sometimes included hot dog stands and sellers of egg rolls and fried rice. This one will feature four food trucks that will offer a wide variety of food and beverages. Individual homes will have baked goods and specialty foods available for purchase. Residents will also sell nonfood items, such as arts and crafts, antiques and collectibles, household goods, clothing, flea market finds, and more. The Wilshire Hills community may be accessed from Columbia Avenue (Route 462) at Wellington Road or from South Centerville Road at Royal Road. Shoppers may park along the streets in the neighborhood. The organizers encourage the wearing of masks and following proper hygiene practices. “I’m looking forward to the summer dates and new time changes so that I can participate this year, resident Joyce Wright remarked. “I appreciate the committee’s continuing work even under these difficult circumstances. It’s neat that the neighborhood still has that close community feel even though we are socially distant. The yard sale will be one example of that.

we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown ex ponentially, said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice. Items featured at the auction are donated by the community. “Typically, we will start collecting auction items the day after the auction for the following year, Minardi explained. “We have a wonderful generous sponsor who has a warehouse space and they donate that. Sometimes we get high-end items like jewelry and original artwork, and those are stored in a secure location at hospice. Discussions about the fate of the 2020 auction began in March soon after the stay-athome order was issued. “ We went out to a remote working location on March 17 and we talked about this incessantly from that time until (now), said Minardi. “We raise nearly $1 million, so it was not an easy decision to make. People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that. On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items - quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia, Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website. As part of the process, people will be able to visit the website, click on the items they are interested in and then bid on them. “People will (have time) to peruse and get
comfortable with this format. Some are digitally native, but we tend to serve an older population and we want to give them time to warm up (to the process), she said. “ We will have a mailing that has stepby-step instructions. People will be simultaneously bidding online. “You will get a notification that you have been outbid and you will have the option to bid again, said Minardi. “All you do is click a button. You don’t have to go back in and register. You just say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ The auction will close on Sept. 15. and whoever has the highest bid will win the item. “We will notify the winners on Sept. 16 if they won or lost the items, Minardi said, noting that people will be asked to pick up their items at HCC in Lancaster. New items, quilts and sports memorabilia donations are being accepted at Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, by appointment only. at 5 p.m. A stand will sell food and beverages, with proceeds benefitting the Mastersonville Fire Company. Auction attendees should be prepared to follow safety guidelines, including wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Online bidding will be offered at www.hessauctiongroup.hibid .com beginning the week before the auction. Jevin noted that just as with many local fair auctions, a buyback option will be available for buyers who choose to send their purchases to market, and butcher shops are lined up for those who would like to keep the meat or donate it to a local food bank. “ We are very thankful for the businesses that have stepped up,” Jevin said, adding that more than 50 have contributed to the production of the expo. That has made it possible to purchase insurance, pay judges, and create prizes. Additional sponsorships are available, and businesses are welcome to participate in the auction. For sponsorship information, readers may email Greg Musser at oldline youthexpo@gmail.com. Does Jevin see the ex po becoming an annual event? “Oh, I hope not,” he said. Old Line Youth Livestock Expo has received its official nonprofit status, and Jevin hopes to keep the organization going, but not in place of local fairs. This year’s event is just to meet an immediate need. “I like helping the kids out, and I want events for the kids. If ever there’s a tough time, we can do fundraisers to help. We can possibly provide seed money for projects,” he said. “If we get more money, we will give more money out. It’ll go back to the kids.” For more information about the Old Line Youth Livestock Ex po, readers may visit www.facebook.com/OldLine YouthExpo.

livestock show at the Manheim Farm Show for a number of years. Jevin’s wife, Courtney, currently shows animals at local fairs, and their oldest child, Waylon, first entered the show ring at age 5. Waylon, who will turn 8 this month, has exhibited goats and pigs, and he wants to add a steer next year. Jevin and a friend, sheep exhibitor Adam Zurin, had joked about hosting a livestock show, but when the Elizabethtown Fair was canceled, they got serious. Jevin, Adam, and about five other people created Old Line Youth Livestock Expo, named for the road the Kreadys’ back driveway meets. The Kreadys’ farm was an ideal place to host the event as they built a barn over the winter and had not yet filled it. Following the Elizabethtown Fair exhibition guidelines, only youths living in Columbia, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Manheim Central, Middletown, Lower Dauphin, Hershey, and Palmyra school districts will be eligible to participate in the Old Line Youth Livestock Expo. Market steers and dairy beef cattle will be judged on Saturday, Aug. 22; market goats and market lambs on Sunday, Aug. 23; and market hogs on Monday, Aug. 24. The event will be closed to spectators. Only exhibitors and parents or guardians will be allowed to attend. “We will be able to do social distancing because we’re just having animals,” Jevin said. “We won’t have livestock here overnight (for exhibitors to attend to).” The public is encouraged to participate in the auction of animals, however. The sale will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 24 by Hess Auction Group, 1667 Cider Press Road, Manheim. Bidder registration will begin
