Pathways Program Helps Youths Deal With Loss eens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings.

T

To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom,

Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults,

Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Center Wins Social Studies Award BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center has a mission of promoting local history. Thanks to its efforts, the organization won the 2020 Outstanding Social Studies Program award from the Pennsylvania Council of Social Studies. The center, located at 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, received the award in October at a virtual ceremony for its program “Iron

Around the Bend.” The program tells the story of the iron industry and its importance to Lancaster County, said David Haneman, Rivertownes PA USA president. “The county has a rich history, especially when it comes to iron furnaces,” he noted. At one time, eight iron furnaces operated along a 2.5-mile stretch between Columbia and Marietta. The anthracite coal that was plentiful

environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, readers may visit w w w. l a n c a s t e r c o u n t y parks.org.

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Sunday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a threetree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Award from pg 1 in eastern Pennsylvania made the county a perfect spot for these furnaces, he said, adding that iron furnaces replaced the charcoal furnaces used before the mid1800s. Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center’s building is located on the site of the original office building from the last of the local furnaces, Haneman stated, noting that it took about 10 years to restore the building. “We have a number of displays and exhibits there,” he said. “We have an HO-scale model of what the furnace complex would have looked like. It’s interesting for both students and adults to visit.” Although programs are offered on a limited basis now due to COVID-19, the center regularly holds activities for school groups and the public and provides educational materials. “We have an iron furnace walking guide for people who are walking along the Northwest River Trail,” Haneman said. “It’s a pocket guide, and it talks about the iron industry. That has been very popular, and we’re currently looking into getting it reprinted because we’ve given out close

to 8,000 copies over the past two and a half years.” Haneman said the organization learned about the social studies award last year from a board member, who suggested applying. “We sent them everything we had, because we didn’t really know what they wanted,” he recalled. “In September, we got the notification that we had won.” Criteria for the award included an exemplary social studies curricular program, as well as a program that encouraged creative ideas, innovative teaching and involvement of students, the community and teachers. “For a little nonprofit like ours that’s all run by volunteers, it was an honor to even be considered for this award,” Haneman noted. “It was incredible to learn that we were considered the best in the state.” He said everything the center does is meant to highlight the history of the region and to keep that history alive. “This is history that has not been written down, and it’s not being taught in schools,” he remarked. “It’s important for people to know the history of our area.”
