Bring On The Bling! he creator of the over-the-top gowns on TLC’s “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). Couture designer Sondra Celli will join the group via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Members of the public are invited to attend and may email lancastersews@gmail.com for details. Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out,
T
and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-by-one by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects. See Bling! pg 4

I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. One of my sisters later asked me who the person was who escorted her down the aisle.

Faulkner Chevrolet Joins Daffodil Days Campaign Faulkner Chevrolet has partnered with the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days campaign. This year’s campaign will be completely redesigned with a digital format. The campaign will run virtually from now until Monday, Feb. 22. Orders can be placed online by visiting www.Faulkner ChevroletLancaster.com /Daffodil-Days. Daffodils are not the only flower choice offered by the American Cancer Society during the campaign. The campaign has partnered with Royers Flowers & Gifts to provide bunches of tulips as well. Flowers may be purchased online and then picked up on Monday and Tuesday, March 22 and 23, at Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, 312 Primrose Lane, Mountville. People may purchase a Bear and a Bunch for a fee; the stuffed bears are very limited because only 30 are available. Shoppers may also purchase a bunch of daffodils, a bunch of tulips, potted mini daffodils, a Daffodil Gift of Hope or a Virtual Daffodil Bunch indicating a donation. The Gift of Hope will give a bunch of daffodils to a patient in a local hospital fighting cancer. Cases of daffodils and tulips are also available online. To order or for more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or email connect @FaulknerChevrolet.com.
Choice Pass provides unlimited free delivery and pickup for an annual dollar amount, which represents a new savings for subscribers. Giant calculated that Choice Pass can pay for itself with two deliveries per month or one pickup per week. With a nod toward its Giant Choice Rewards program, Choice Pass will replace the current model of PodPass. To underscore this customer-facing change,
Choice Pass also comes with a new logo that takes its origins from Giant Choice Rewards. The Giant Company introduced the Giant Direct brand in February 2019 when it debuted its first ecommerce hub in the city of Lancaster. In July 2019, the company opened its 100th pickup location, in Carlisle. Along the way, the company also launched a new website to deliver a unified online
experience bringing everything together for customers - all offerings, products and Giant Choice Rewards - with a bolder interface and enhanced personalization. Customers across 90% of the company’s footprint have access to online grocery ordering and delivery services. Readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com for more information.

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. As a reader, you may bring the coupon below to Gardner’s Mattress & More and claim your Free Gifts before the March 2 deadline.

She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blinged-out shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. -The day I interviewed a group of individuals who had planted a new church - and then went to my next appointment and realized I was at the church they had left. I have always been grateful that I have not had to cover hard news. I have witnessed your joys and celebrations, your Eagle Scout achievements and fair queen coronations. There have been stories rooted in sorrows as well: 9/11 stair climbs and family members raising money for Relay For Life in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. I have been privy to your frustrations and, at times, anger, but it has been a blessing to reassure you that “we publish only good news, so this is off the record.” Like it was for so many people, 2020 was a difficult year for me. As the year dragged on, I realized the time had come for me to try something different, to grow in a new direction. My last day as the Newspaper Lady was Feb. 5. I have moved on, but I have not moved away. Once it is safe to linger in person again, I will be eager to hear your updates, but not for publication. For that, send your news items to news@engleonline.com or call 717-892-6018 to talk to a member of our editorial staff. Farewell, and God bless.

That excitement continued on my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts. I have so many fond

memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled. -Competing in the invitational milking contest at the Solanco Fair. -Being teased by Bethesda United Methodist Church members the first time I experimented with purple hair. -Standing in a pasture at Noble Hill Horse Rescue as horses grazed around us - and then one tried to eat my notepad. -Judging a cooking class contest at Penn Manor High School. And there are the not-sofond memories: -The death of Lancaster County Master Gardener Tom Beck in 2015. This hit me hard because we had worked on numerous stories together. I treasure the giant allium that blooms outside my front door every spring; it was the party favor from the Master Gardener dinner where Tom and his wife, Betty, hosted me a few months before his passing. -The time I combined the names of two educators and misnamed Martin Meylin Middle School principal Jamie Raum in print.

DAR Chapter Helps Organizations Dress for Success was valued at over $1,000. A $20 check was also received. Dress for Success helps women in local communities take the first steps to financial independence for themselves and their families by providing them with career and work attire.
Monies also went to the School District of Lancaster’s Families in Transition Program, known as FIT. The goal of this program is to enable a student’s education to continue as uninterrupted as possible while the student is homeless. The items donated for Families in Transition were valued at $400. Additionally, $375 in monetary donations was received. The Lebanon VA Medical Center has been providing medical care to veterans for more than 70 years. The DAR chapter collected items valued at $250 for the organization along with a $75 check.
Science Explorers will host science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) summer camps. Registration is open, and a discount will be offered for those who register before Monday, Feb. 15, using the code “earlybird.” This code is case-sensitive. Full and half-day camps are available. Both in-person and virtual camps will be offered. The inperson STEM Camp, available at select locations only, has been slightly adjusted to ensure the safety of all participants. For example, materials will be packed individu-
ally so that students are not required to share. Virtual STEM Summer Camp will be offered so that young scientists can learn from the safety of their own home. Materials can be delivered straight to the home of participants. Readers may visit www.scienceexplorers.com and look under Our Programs for details and registration information. New inperson camp locations will be added daily, so readers should check back if they do not see their location currently listed.

In a crucial mid-season Section One showdown on Friday night, January 29, the Cedar Crest girls’ basketball team managed to disrupt Hempfield’s flow in a 52-44 win at Landisville. The result put both teams at a 4-1 tie for first place in the section. The Falcons held Hempfield to two points in the opening period. The Knights (4-3 overall) erased one point before the half only to see Cedar Crest extend its lead to 12 heading into the fourth quarter. Autumn Cook came through with 11 points for Hempfield, including a three-point basket and a 2-for-2 night at the foul line. Jess Weinoldt finished with
10 points while both Ava Baer and Lauren Moffatt scored seven. With a balanced attack, Reese Glover and Kaya Camasta led the Falcons with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Quite contrary to the first quarter of the Cedar Crest game, the Black Knights put up 17 points to open their game against Governor Mifflin on Saturday afternoon, January 30. In the non-league game at the Keystone Cup in Dallastown, the Knights held off the Mustangs for a 46-43 victory. The second and third periods made it a closer game as the Mustangs galloped back with a 30-17 run to carry a four-point lead into the fourth quarter. Hempfield held Mifflin to only five points in the final stanza. Moffatt put up a game-high 16 points, drilling one three-point shot and going 5-for-6 at the

Columbia Food Bank Supports Community The past year has been a trying one for the Columbia Food Bank, but the organization has never wavered in its support of the community, said Danielle Peters, director. “This is a year when everybody is in need, she remarked. “We’re seeing people who have never been to a food bank in their life. We want people to know, if you come to our door, no matter where you’re from, you’re going to walk out with groceries. The Columbia Food Bank operates out of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St. It is open 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “Clients can come to us once a month, Peters said, noting that an ID is all that is
needed to receive food. “We prepack the groceries for them, and we give people everything they would receive at the grocery store - breakfast foods, lunch foods, dinner foods, snacks. We’re fortunate to be able to supply meat, cheese, butter and eggs as well. The food bank serves mostly the Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield, Manor Township and Washington Boro areas, although Peters said clients have come from all over central Pennsylvania. She noted that in 2019, the food bank gave away approximately 66,000 pounds of food, while in 2020, that number grew to 70,000 pounds. The organization is a nonprofit and receives its support through food and monetary

Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. (JBT) recently announced that Tim Jesiolowski has successfully completed coursework at the Bank Technology Management School presented by the Graduate School of Banking (GSB) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. donations from the community. This past year, food donations were down due to closings of offices and other businesses that might normally hold food drives, Peters noted. “We’re community supported, and because people are so generous, our money donations went up this past year, she said. “The issue became trying to find places to buy food, because many of the stores and agencies we purchase from were going through their own shortages. Even with all that going on, though, God is good. Nobody ever went away without food. The organization uses monetary donations to purchase food, including perishable items since those are typically not donated and because the food bank has little storage space to keep things long-term. “We are constantly replen-

ishing our supply, she explained, adding that in 2019, the organization purchased 20,357 pounds of food. “In 2020, we had to buy 27,234 pounds of food. She said the generosity of the community has allowed the food bank to continue to serve the public, even when the organization has endured additional challenges. The church that houses the food bank has faced some building issues, and it’s likely the organization will need to find a new home in the future, Peters noted. But thanks to community support and a team of volunteers, the food bank continues to serve anyone who needs it. “When you need help, you need help. There’s no shame in that, Peters said. “If you were baking a cake and you needed an egg, wouldn’t you go next door to a neighbor and ask for one? We like to think of ourselves as that neighbor. We are here for you. When you walk in the door, we are here for you. For more information on the Columbia Food Bank, readers may visit https://columbiafoodbank.org.

The aim is to provide Spanish speaking residents with the information they need to maintain a safe private water supply. This includes water obtained through a private well, spring or cistern. Water coming from a public water company or authority must meet drinking water safety standards when it leaves the treatment plant. However, if someone owns a private well or spring, all management and testing is voluntary.
