Hempfield Graduate Plans Kenyan Project ne conversation can change your life. In November 2019, Eric Slaugh flew to California to visit his brother. During the flight, Slaugh chatted with his seatmates, one of whom was on her way to Las Vegas to raise money for Sirua Aulo Academy in the Kapune region of Kenya. A dependable source of potable water was one of the specific needs for the school. The cause struck a chord. Prior to graduating from Hempfield High School in 2011, Slaugh had started the Society for Environmental Advocates club at his school. He earned a degree in chemical and environmental engineering from Clarkson University and then backpacked through part of Africa for two months. Slaugh eventually moved to Seattle, where he works on water and environmental issues. One of his projects involves the remediation of a site where a laundromat discharged chemicals into the soil. The chemicals then leached into groundwater, and Slaugh’s team

will work with regulatory agencies to decide how to treat the water so it can safely enter a nearby river. Similar concepts will be part of the well-building project that Slaugh has signed on to direct at Sirua Aulo Academy. He and a team of experts from the United States and Kenya have designed a well and pipelines that will provide water to the 300 students and staff members at the academy as well as the 3,000 people who live in the surrounding Maasai community. Engineers Without Borders provides support when needed, and Slaugh’s fundraising efforts are under the auspices of Seattle-based Village Volunteers. “We will break ground when we have the money,” Slaugh shared, noting that the project needs at least $24,000 for drilling the well and putting in a pump. The construction of pipelines to the school and to the public access site, as well as a storage tank at the school and a taphouse at the access site, will have additional costs. Solar panels will also need to be purchased and installed to keep the pump operational. See Hempfield Graduate pg 6

When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization. “I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign. The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” See Hope Within pg 3

The Siloam Ethiopia clinic in Harar, Ethiopia, is in need of a blood chemistry machine. “The blood chemistry machine will check hemoglobin count, cholesterol, blood sugar, and liver function,” explained Wegayhu Ketema, one of the founders of the clinic. Ketema went on to explain that the in-depth blood analysis provided by the machine can help detect deficiencies and hidden diseases among the poor
and homeless the free clinic serves. To start raising the $25,000 that is needed to purchase the machine, Ketema’s church, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville, will offer a curbside Ethiopian meal by donation from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The menu will include doro wat, which is a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, which is a spicy pink lentil; atikilt wat, which includes spicy cabbage, carrot; and potato; and kik alicha, a dish with See Siloam Ethiopia pg 7

These are Bible-based clubs sponsored by Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County that meet after school at various locations throughout the county as well as online via Zoom. The Temple Beth El Lancaster’s Lifelong Learning Committee is presenting “Shared Legacies: The African American-Jewish Civil Rights Alliance.” The film is available to view anytime through Wednesday, March 3, and a discussion about it will take place on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The film is available with special permission from Menemsha Films. This project will benefit the Crispus Attucks Community Center, a program of Community Action Partnership. Crispus Attucks Community Center strives to improve the quality of life for youths and families in Lancaster by providing services that promote community prosperity and physical and mental health and by offering programs and cultural events which preserve the African American heritage. Crispus Attucks sponsors community-wide cultural events, including Lancaster’s annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, Black History Month events, and the Juneteenth Celebration. Dayspring Christian Academy has instituted a Hybrid Learning Initiative engaging students through three rotating stations: small group direct instruction, collaborative learning application stations, and independent online work.
Dayspring Christian Academy, which teaches students using the Principle Approach, will host an all-school open house on Thursday, March 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, located at 120 College Ave., Mountville. Families will be able to tour the school and visit with teachers. Dayspring was founded in 1987 and is one of 25 Principle Approach schools in America. Of those, Dayspring is one of five model demonstration schools. The school’s goal is to equip students to acknowledge the lordship of
Jesus Christ and develop a biblical worldview. Through the classical method of education, students work to develop excellence in academics and character. Inherent in the Principle Approach is the aim of restoring America’s biblical foundation. Dayspring offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Lower School and Upper School sports. These sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, track, and golf. A partnership with McCaskey High School in Lancaster
permits students to participate in all of the school’s sports, including football, baseball, and swimming. Additionally, courses and clubs include Lower School Choir, Performance Choir, middle school and high school choirs, and art. Further, students in fourth grade learn to play the violin while fifthgrade students all learn to play the ukulele. Students in grades six through 12 also have opportunities to try many new experiences through a wide array of clubs, ranging from Wire Art to Baking to Photographic Microscopy. The school’s Principle Approach curriculum includes many in-depth field study experiences, including time in Plymouth, Mass., to study the Pilgrims; Boston to study John Adams’ family; Gettysburg; the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; and New York City. Solar power will make the initial construction somewhat more complex, but it will be cheaper to operate and will require less maintenance over the long run. “We think it’s a huge advantage,” Slaugh commented. “It won’t require diesel fuel, and there’s less to break. Making things repairable is of huge importance.” So far, Slaugh has raised $6,000 for his project through word-of-mouth,

YWCA Welcomes Board Members YWCA Lancaster welcomed seven new members to the board of directors. The new members will serve threeyear terms. The mission of the agency is to eliminate racism and empower women. The elected members were selected among dozens of community business and civic leaders referred for the openings this year. These individuals will join the leaders who are already part of the board to guide the agency in the coming year. Assuming the role of chair of the board on Dec. 10, 2020, was Deborah Wilson Gadsden, the first black woman to lead the board since its existence. She has served as a member of the board, including the mission and executive committees,

Asked how much she hopes the meal will raise, Ketema refused to speculate. “I don’t want to underestimate the Lord,” she said. Ketema’s faith has already brought her far. A decade ago, the clinic she helped found in Harar was still a dream she had held since the age of 8. Raised in Harar, Ketema would see a nurse driving herself to work each morning and dream of one day becoming a nurse and helping her people. Ironically, Ketema had to leave her homeland to make that happen. “My mother sent us to England to learn English and then to India,” explained Ketema, who was licensed as a nurse in India in 1985. She moved to Djibouti in East Africa, where she worked in a private clinic and became a Christian in 1988. Politics in the Muslim country caused her to flee to Nairobi, Kenya, along with her fiancé, Demeke Getahun, who is now her husband. In 1989, the door opened for them to travel to the U.S. as refugees, relocating first to Sioux Falls, S.D., and then to York, where a Living Word
since 2014. Church was supportive of their church back in Djibouti. Because she was not licensed in the U.S., Ketema worked as a nurse’s aide in several nursing homes, eventually moving from York to Lancaster and beginning to attend Ethiopian Evangelical. After six years, Ketema obtained her LPN license. She received her RN in 2013. “I love what I do,” said Ketema. “The Lord has been so gracious to me.” In 1999, Ketema felt the Lord leading her to pray about the clinic she hoped to open in Harar. “In 2015, we organized a few friends and started a board,” shared Ketema, who traveled to Ethiopia to assess the feasibility of a clinic in 2015. The clinic began serving patients in 2018. The organization is in the process of digging a fifth well to serve the clinic because water is so scarce in the area.
