specific needs. “Oftentimes neighboring volunteers don’t realize the assets they have access to because of who they know (in the area),” she noted. Both Metzler and Yoder told of instances when neighboring volunteers connected with dentists, mechanics, or others to provide services a family needed at little or no cost. One goal of Bridge of Hope is to move a family into housing within two months of entering the program. To reach that milestone, the organization partners with faith-based groups and landlords within a community. “ We provide rental assistance on a decreasing basis,” explained Yoder. “We are looking for landlords who want to support families.” Metzler will be meeting with churches and other groups throughout the county to encourage volunteers to connect with Bridge of Hope as the organization looks to increase the number of families in the area it serves. “Our vision is to have a church in each school district ready to jump in when a family (needs help),” said Yoder. “ We are looking to engage (with) those who are looking to have a relational outreach opportunity.” She added, “Audrey often says that (Bridge of Hope) allows people to be the hands and feet of Christ.” Bridge of Hope’s gala luncheon fundraising event will be held on Friday, May 8, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. The keynote speaker will be Shannan Martin, author of “The Ministry of Ordinary Places.” “She is very engaging,” said Yoder. “Neighboring is her thing.” Doors for the luncheon will open at 10:30 a.m., and the luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. Readers who would like more information about Bridge of Hope or the gala may visit https://lancaster.bridge ofhopeinc.org.

Suite 205, Lancaster, in December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local volunteer groups through churches and other faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups. “I will be recruiting and training neighboring volunteers from local churches and matching them up with families (facing homelessness),” said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care coordinator, and a transportation coordinator. According to Edith Yoder, national executive director of Bridge of Hope, the volunteer groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to 10 volunteers from a neighboring church,” said Yoder, who noted that the volunteer group members are encouraged to get to know the head of the family they will work with, often the mother, and then spend time with the family engaging in fun group activities. Bridge of Hope will provide case management and connections to area resources the family may need. Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members bring the families facing homelessness is social capital that they might not even know they have,” she said, explaining that social capital refers to connections within the community that can help meet the family’s

neighboring Duke Street garage, and tickets will be validated at the front desk of the hotel. The Keating Jazz Orchestra will provide music for dancing, heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a cash bar will be open. Professionals will host a variety of games. “The House Always Wins” is designed to be an enjoyable way for individuals and businesses to support Clare House Lancaster, whose mission is to help homeless women and children become stabilized and build healthy, empowered lives. The organization was founded by a group of Catholic nuns 40 years ago, said Maryanne O’Neill, who became the executive director on June 12, 2019, after previously heading up Mom’s House of Lancaster. Clare House no longer identifies as faith-based, but a number of religious organizations in Lancaster County provide support. Clare House provides housing for single women and their children for up to a year and offers an additional six months of after care. The two houses at 342-344 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, can accommodate seven families with up to 20 children. “We are one of the few shelters that allow children - especially boys - under age 18 to stay with their moms,” O’Neill said, adding that keeping families together reduces stress on both mothers and children. Every woman is paired with a case manager, who helps her find employment and, if needed, child care. Clients are also connected with mental health services. A weekly group therapy session was recently launched at Clare House, and the feedback from the clients was overwhelmingly positive. “About 75% of people coming into our program have experienced trauma,” O’Neill reported.

While women and families live at Clare House, the organization provides everything they need except for food, which the women can usually get for themselves with SNAP or TANF benefits. If they do not have benefits, the case manager helps them to apply, and the Clare House community rallies around the client. “That’s what’s great about the Lancaster community,” case manager Michelle Rybner remarked. “If we need something, we reach out to our partners.” While parents are focusing on workplace development and saving for living in their own homes, Clare House staff members strive to keep life typical for the children. Birthday celebrations are routinely held for the youngsters. “We aim to be family-friendly,” O’Neill said. Sometimes the parents are little more than children themselves. Clare House has been increasingly serving young people transitioning out of foster care as well as high school students. “It takes time to build rapport,” said program director Dawn Allen, adding that she is thrilled when a client moves from reticence to openness. Clare House Lancaster is entirely donor-funded, making fundraisers like “The House Always Wins” an important part of its budget. Volunteers are also crucial to operations, as they help with maintenance, child care, homework, and encouragement for clients. O’Neill would like to develop a mentorship program and welcomes inquiries from interested volunteers. Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) executive director Stacy Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado want people to know that DSAA is open and available for them. “We’re open to everybody,” said Emminger. “We consider ourselves a community recovery center, and when we have these programs we want people in recovery to come, but we also want people in the community to come. Our goal is to bring people together.” In 2014, Emminger’s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23. Emminger and other Donegal-area residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities. DSAA, which also now stands for Delivering Supportive Approaches to Addiction to encompass the organization’s goal to reach people well beyond the Donegal area, moved into its new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Oct. 1, 2019, and began hosting weekly 12-step yoga sessions and other events for the public. DSAA is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Free computer access, coffee and snacks, hygiene products, and gently used clothing are available for people as needed. DSAA staff and trained volunteers are also available to listen and talk and to point people in the direction of helpful resources. “The goal here is to make recovery commonplace. Recovery should be expected, because

anyone that is struggling with addiction can recover, and it’s becoming easier to find resources,” Emminger shared. Providing a space for connection is an important part of the recovery process, she added, so that people have aftercare when leaving a treatment facility. DSAA aims to offer that as well as consistent support for people with loved ones facing an addiction. Programs centered on education, prevention, and awareness are also offered. Ongoing programs include a Moms in Recovery Coffee Hour from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and 12-step yoga from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. winter camping, tubing, and summer camp, among other activities. This summer, Donald and 14 other Scouts, along with seven adults, will participate in a Sea Base High Adventure activity. The 22 people will travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where they will spend a week aboard sailboats with periodic stops to hike in a national park or snorkel in coral reefs. Each sailboat will have an experienced captain, but the Scouts will help to operate the vessels. Younes noted that troop members did some sailing on the Chesapeake Bay during summer camp last year, so they have basic knowledge of the skills required to be successful sailors. Troop 349 has about 40 members and meets weekly at St. Paul’s UMC. New members are welcome. “Our troop is a really fun place, Donald remarked. “Everyone has a different interest, and they bring their own cultures. They contribute ideas and make the troop better. To learn more about Troop 349 or to buy spaghetti dinner tickets, readers may call Younes at 717-898-7177.

The Scouts will organize the event and help with setting up the room, serving the food, seating guests, and cleaning up afterward. Their parents and other adults will do the cooking. Knights Edge Wilson 43-42 in District Opener by Ara Grigorian

The Hempfield girls’ basketball team began play in the District Three Class 6A playoffs by hosting the Wilson Bulldogs on Monday, February 17. In what proved to be a very close basketball game, the Black Knights prevailed 43-42, slowing down a Wilson comeback bid in the second half. Coming out of the locker rooms to start the second half, the Knights (186) held a solid 24-15 lead. The Bulldogs outscored the Knights 19-11 in the third quarter, but were held to only eight points in the final period. “We played them earlier in the season and lost by eight points,” explained head coach Kendra Merrifield. “They played a 3-2 zone against us Monday night. We also had to slow down our offensive possessions. We wanted to make sure we weren’t just coming down the court

and settling for the first perimeter shot - slow down the game and make them play defense longer. “Our girls did a great job of executing the game plan,” Merrifield added. The game’s top scoring honors went to forward Orianna Edmond. The 6-foot-1 sophomore poured in 18 points, which included a perfect 6-for6 night at the free throw line. “She went into the game and did a fabulous job defensively,” Merrifield commented. “Offensively, she really had the touch. They have three kids who are 5-9 or 5-10. We needed a larger presence. “She just stepped up and enjoyed herself,” continued the coach. “When she’s playing well, everyone comes together around her. It has been building all season.” Lindsey Durkota was 3-for-4 at the charity stripe and finished with 11 points and Autumn Cook scored seven points. Kaya Burkhart led Wilson with

16 points. The Knights, who entered district play as the seventh seed, traveled to second-ranked Cumberland Valley for the quarterfinals. The defending district champion Eagles improved to 183 with a 55-26 defeat of Hempfield, holding the Knights’ offense to a mere seven points in the first half. “We were definitely the underdogs,” Merrifield remarked. “The atmosphere got to us a little bit. They went up 11-1 and we missed a couple of easy layups.” Durkota was limited to seven points in the game and Cook made a pair of three-point baskets for her six points of the night. Julie Jekot scored 18 to lead CV, including three triples. Kylie Holcomb also buried three treys and finished with 13 points for the Eagles, who moved on to the semifinals. “It was good experience for our kids,” Merrifield said. “We obviously wanted to win, but we also knew we still had a chance to play again.” As for Hempfield, the season does not end. The PIAA’s take the top seven teams from District Three Class 6A. The Black Knights (18-7) will have consolation semifinals scheduled on Monday, February 24. “When we won that first game against Wilson, it got us to the round where even if we lost, we could still play in the consolation,” Merrifield explained. February 21-22. In the 113-pound weight class, Hempfield’s Gio Luciano suffered a tough defeat at the hands of Spring Grove’s Levi Snyder in the opening round. Snyder, wrestling on his home gym’s mat, earned an 11-6 decision, sending Luciano to the consolation brackets. Following a pin he posted 24 seconds into the second period of his first consolation match, Luciano lost to eventual third-place finisher Aiden Lewis of Cedar Cliff. Reagan Lefevre rebounded from a first-round loss in the 132-pound competition to post a 9-1 major decision in the consolations. Lefevre lost a 3-1 overtime decision to Cumberland Valley’s Gabriel Belga but downed Austin Brass of Ephrata in the consis. Belga would go on to finish fifth. At 152, Joel Dionne came up empty versus Luke Sainato of Gettysburg in the first round. In a battle between two seniors, Sainato posted a technical fall. Dionne pinned Pierce Feite of Northern York in the first period of their first consolation match. But he couldn’t get past Chambersburg’s Tate Nichter, the fifth-place finisher. Martin, a well-known genealogist and author, will host the workshop, which will share a new perspective on Mennonite and Amish genealogy. This perspective is a result of advances in DNA testing. The Shaarai Shpielers will perform their 22nd annual Purimshpiel, “The Pajama Shpiel,” on Sunday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. Admission will be free. The Purimshpiel - which gets its name from the Yiddish word “spiel,” meaning play - is a comic production that features participants wearing costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther. This book is the central text and narrative that describes what transpired on Purim and why it has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and somehow merge the themes of that musical with the story of Esther. This year, they have chosen as their parody vehicle the musical “The Pajama Game.” The major roles will be played by Josh Schwartz, King
