Describing the annual event sponsored by SHOUT Student Ministries at Hempfield United Methodist Church as a gigantic indoor yard sale does not even begin to hint at its enormity. The yard sale practically fills one level of the church building, 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Youth group members and supporters spend the two weeks before the sale pricing the items and sorting them by department: domestics, furniture, toys, office and craft, collectibles, jewelry, electronics, sporting goods, seasonal/holidays, tools and outdoors, pets, and clothing. Each department will have its own space at the sale.

“The yard sale serves many purposes, but its largest purpose is to support summer youth missions. Youths are expected to take active roles (in the event), said senior high youth director Stacy Knight. In addition to sorting, the young people help to serve dinner during the preparation nights, and they work as cashiers and runners on the day of the yard sale. A majority of the sale inventory is contributed by congregation members. “They know we have the sale every year, Knight remarked. “We start communicating after Christmas that we need stuff, we need volunteers, and we need shoppers. We do get people by word of mouth who are cleaning out (their collections). See Indoor Yard Sale pg 4

SHOUT Student Ministries members (from left) Abigail Gingrich, Seth Hackman, and Alex Valle display items that will be offered in the group’s annual indoor yard sale, which will be held on March 14 at Hempfield United Methodist Church.

UPCOMING PROGRAM

The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present “The Blind Organist of Notre-Dame: Louis Vierne on Sunday, March 22, at 4 p.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church, 110 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The program will trace the tumultuous story of French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937) through a multimedia presentation that includes pictures, narration, and live organ music. The public is invited to attend. A suggested donation will be collected to support the Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Boy Scout Troop 64 will hold its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser on March 21 at Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown. By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The promise to help people at all times is part of the Boy Scout Oath. Boy Scout Troop 64 demonstrated its commitment to its oath through a recent service project for its charter organization, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

At its Feb. 18 meeting, the troop’s committee approved the purchase of a secure display box in which to house an automated external defibrillator (AED). The medical device will be supplied through a grant found by Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans, and she will be in charge of maintenance and upkeep. Evans had noted that the See Troop 64 pg 4

We Are Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day On

As is traditional for Manor Church, two mission trips are planned for students. In June, seven juniors and seniors will go to Puerto Rico, and in July, 27 students in seventh through 10th grades will travel to Pittsburgh. The groups will serve with organizations they have previously worked with. Eighth-grader Emily Supplee said that last year, the students were assigned to serve in various locations throughout Pittsburgh during the day, and everyone gathered back at their home base for evening worship and to sleep. Some students volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, and others assisted at a nonprofit café. Emily helped to empty a food bank so the ceiling could be repaired and removed carpet in preparation for new flooring. In Puerto Rico last year, the team divided its day between two locations, said senior Caleb Supplee. The mornings were spent interacting with children at a vacation Bible school, and in the afternoons, the youths helped with hurricane reconstruction efforts. Caleb’s team repaired a leaking roof and painted a home inside and out. The team also participated in a community outreach night during which they took bags of food to residents and prayed with them.

“The purpose is to get out there and help people,” Caleb said. “It also helps youths see more than they’ve grown up with.” “The service aspect (is important),” Walmer added. “Our youths follow Christ’s example to serve, and not just in local communities. (Through the trips) they see different communities than they’re used to and different glimpses of the world around them.” Emily and Caleb’s parents, Ray and Dana DeAngelis, coordinate the benefit auction, so the siblings have had an inside look at all the work that goes into preparing for the event. They also have fun on the day of the auction. “The work that we do during the auction, we enjoy it,” Emily commented, adding that it is a good time of fellowship, cooperation, and teambuilding for the youth group members. “The youth group is one of the biggest senses of community for many of us,” Caleb remarked. “These trips are important to us because of that. We work really hard for these trips because it’s important to have this time together.” Donations for the auction are welcome, and readers may call Walmer at 717-285-3138 to discuss dropping off an item or to learn more about the event.

MARCH ANNOUNCEMENTS

4 - MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition - March 11, 2020

Troop 64 from pg 1 church lacked an AED, a device that is becoming commonplace in public buildings. In addition to Troop 64’s meetings, Salem UCC hosts numerous meetings throughout the week. Working with the church to ensure that the appropriate equipment is on hand in the event of a medical emergency seemed like the right thing to do, Evans explained. “The timing was really good,” Evans said. “They were ready for it and had formed a safety committee (to look into obtaining an AED).” The secure box will be bought with money raised by troop members. The Scouts host several fundraisers throughout the year, with the next one falling on Saturday, March 21. The all-you-caneat spaghetti dinner will be held at Salem UCC from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu will include pasta, sauce, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert, and beverages. Gluten-free pasta will be available. During the meal, a craft table will be open for children to enjoy at no additional charge. Troop 64 members will serenade the guests every halfhour as well.

Separate prices have been set for children and for adults. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the members of Troop 64 and Cub Scout Pack 37. “To get the Cub Scouts involved, they can sell tickets and keep half (of the price). We do it so they’re introduced to the troop, and it helps their pack too,” Evans remarked. Similarly, Scouts who sell tickets receive half of the amount they sold into their activity accounts, and those who work at the dinner receive an additional percentage. “We try to make it easy so there’s not a big expense for when they go on trips, like to Canada,” Evans explained. This summer, about 20 Scouts are slated to go to summer camp at Bashore Scout Reservation in Jonestown, and an additional six will travel to Atikokan, Ontario, Canada, to participate in a Northern Tier High Adventure. The half-dozen Scouts will be accompanied by two adult leaders, and the eight individuals will spend about six weekends preparing for the adventure. They will then be dropped off at a remote site in Ontario with a guide and have to make it back

to the rendezvous site in six days. There will be an occasional checkpoint, but for the most part, the group will be on its own in the wilds of Canada. It is not too late for youths in fifth grade and up who are interested in Scouting to join Troop 64. Currently, the troop has approximately 24 members. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at Salem UCC. The Scouts are planning to again participate in Wreaths Across America in December. Troop 64 is already accepting donations to ensure that every grave of a deceased veteran is honored for the holidays. Evans expressed her gratitude that several businesses have already sponsored wreaths for two local cemeteries, and more wreaths have been sponsored for placement at other local graves, should the respective cemetery boards choose to participate. WAA donations will be accepted at any time, Evans said. “We have a lot of awesome projects going on,” she concluded. For more information about Troop 64, its projects, and the March 21 spaghetti dinner, readers may call Evans at 717572-3448.

Indoor Yard Sale from pg 1 This year’s sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. From noon to 1 p.m., nearly everything will be sold by the bag. Jewelry and collectibles will not be included in the bargain. “Every year, we have these amazing stories. The yard sale always manages to meet a need for a family or group of families,” Knight said, noting that with careful packing in the bargain bags, customers have been able to restock wardrobes and kitchens after a fire or an unexpected move at much less than the cost of retail. Knight also said she is grateful that any unsold items can go to area organizations that also help others. Unto, formerly Global Aid Network; Community Aid; Boy Scout troops; and other churches with yard sales have benefited in the past. “These items were entrusted to us for a specific purpose, so we want to make sure that what doesn’t sell is used with good intentions,” Knight said. The Spirit Café will be set up in the church’s fellowship hall. Other ministries from the congregation and some from the community will sell a variety of food and beverages. Power Packs Project is slated to participate in the café, Knight said, adding, “It’s another great way that we can support more than just us.” Helping others is a goal of the

Lady Knights Bow in PIAA Opener

by Ara Grigorian

The Hempfield girls’ basketball team came up short in its first-round game of the PIAA class 6A state playoffs on Friday, March 6. The game was a battle between District One champion Central Bucks West and the Hempfield Black Knights, who had entered the state tournament as the seventh seed from District Three. The Bucks came in with a 23-3 record. In the playoff game played at Council Rock South in Bucks County, the CB West Bucks charged ahead for a 23-8 halftime lead and held off Hempfield in the second half, posting a 49-32 victory. “They’re a very good basketball team with four seniors in their starting lineup, Kendra Merrifield, the Hempfield head coach. “For us to go in there and hold them to 23 points at the half, which is right where we want to keep teams, was a good

thing. We just couldn’t get our baskets to go in. The Bucks averaged just over 56 points per game in their previous three wins. Their defensive pressure gave Hempfield a tough time on Friday night. “We missed some wide open layups, said Merrifield. “We struggled to initiate our offense. Some of their defensive pressure didn’t allow us to settle in offensively. They caused some turnovers, which turned into buckets for them. The Knights’ offensive load was shared by Lauren Moffatt and Autumn Cook, who scored eight and seven points, respectively. Jess Weinoldt and Orianna Edmond each put up four points. Lindsey Durkota added three points. Ava Baer and Olivia Richards each connected on a three-point jump shot for their scoring of the night. Hempfield did outscore CB West 15-13 in the fourth

2020/21

quarter. But it was too little too late. The Knights’ season came to an end with a 19-9 mark, which included a 13-0 perfect record against Lancaster-Lebanon League foes in the regular season. That mark was obviously good enough to earn Hempfield the Section One title. As any successful high school basketball season, especially one that extends to the state playoffs, one can look back at all of the achievements.

“We talked early this season that if the girls put the work in, they could achieve great things, Merrifield remarked. “Getting to states for the first time in 15 years was certainly special. The post-season opponents didn’t exactly topple over for Hempfield as evidenced by their seventh-place finish in districts. However, the losses the team did suffer went on to show character in how Hempfield came

Valley. After a first-round win in districts, beating Wilson 43-42, the Knights lost to Cumberland Valley and Manheim Township, making it imperative that they win the seventh-place consolation game over Dallastown. “It’s a special group of girls and it’s an exciting time for Hempfield basketball, Merrifield added. “We return eight girls from this team next year.

ASSETS Plans Temporary Move ASSETS has announced that it will temporarily relocate one-half block north while its permanent home at Southern Market undergoes a renovation. The Southern Market project is underway, and the ASSETS office will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20, and Friday, Feb. 21, as the organization relocates to the historic Yeates Building at 24 S. Queen St., Lancaster, where it will operate for 12 to 18 months. For years, the future of his-

toric Southern Market has remained in limbo, but ASSETS has continued growing, even when it was the only organization left in the building. With the assurance of its permanent home, ASSETS is making plans for its new second- and thirdfloor office space and the hub for diverse entrepreneurs, social enterprises, B Corporations and impactfocused businesses that is envisioned for Southern Market.

back and qualified for the PIAA’s. “Each tournament we entered, we wanted to go further in each, Merrifield said. “But the girls showed growth each time, turning around and beating Wilson after the league playoff loss to Pequea Valley and coming back for a huge win over Dallastown. The seniors were able to lead in different ways. The Knights’ pursuit of a league trophy was derailed by Pequea

The renovation is not just about outfitting ASSETS’ space within Southern Market, but it is also about creating an office environment that furthers ASSETS’ mission to transform the community through inclusive entrepreneurship and ethical business. Over the next year, ASSETS will work with architects to design a space that not only meets the needs of staff member and clients, but also showcases forwardthinking, cutting-edge leadership for the Lancaster business community. It is intended to be a welcoming space where diverse entrepreneurs and

inclusive businesses may come together and celebrate the current strengths of the community and offer solutions. The new space will also be designed to foster creativity. ASSETS believes that the revitalized Southern Market building can be a catalyst for true equitable economic development in Lancaster city. ASSETS will partner with Willow Valley and Lancaster Equity, the leading organizations on the renovation, to ensure that Southern Market will be reborn as a cultural food hall, restaurant incubation space, and event center.

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition -

Two talented casts at Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) are preparing to perform Jason Robert Brown’s musical drama “The Last Five Years” on the Gallery Stage at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances are scheduled for Fridays through Sundays, March 13 to 15 and 20 to 22, with Friday and Saturday shows beginning at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday shows at 2 p.m. Director Ryan Dean Schoening opted to double-cast the musical, which takes an intimate look at the story of the seemingly doomed marriage of 20-something New Yorkers Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, an aspiring writer. Alyssa Dienner and Adam Dienner will be performing

the weekend of March 13 to 15. Larissa Melbert and Sean Meara will star in performances on March 20 to 22. “Both casts are very good at storytelling. From auditions through callbacks and rehearsals, they have done an outstanding job of telling the story,” emphasized Schoening. “The Last Five Years” will mark Schoening’s directing debut at SSC; however, he has directed several performances at Oyster Mill Playhouse in Camp Hill. He will not only be directing but playing in the pit orchestra for the performances at SSC. “It is easily one of the toughest scores I’ve ever played,” Schoening noted. “As a composer, Jason Robert Brown is one of my biggest inspirations,” said Schoening. “Every time you hear his music, you can

feel it and you can visualize everything that’s happening in the show without actually seeing it.” “He’s just a genius writer. His style is unmatched,” continued Schoening. Alyssa and Adam, who are married in real life, are thrilled to be performing together as an onstage married couple. The performances also happen to fall on the couple’s actual five-year anniversary adding an extra air of excitement to the experience. Both actors have appeared in numerous shows at SSC and Ephrata Performing Arts Center, as well as other theaters throughout the central Pennsylvania region. Melbert and Meara, who will play Cathy and Jamie, respectively, on the weekend of March 20 to 22, said that audiences are in for a treat with the show ’s

incredible music as well as the unusual timeline in which the couple’s story unfolds onstage. “ What makes (‘The Last Five Years’) unique is that is it told from two different perspectives but set in two different time periods,” explained Meara. Schoening said that audiences will leave with plenty to think about when it comes to relationships. “I want everyone to know that they’re watching a very universal, human moment onstage,” Schoening stated. Interested individuals may purchase tickets at www.susque hannastageco.com or at the box office prior to each performance. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students under age 18. For more details, readers may visit www.face book.com/susquehannastageco.

and those who have been honorably discharged so they may promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding all Marines, FMF corpsmen, and former Marines and FMF corpsmen and their widows and orphans. The Marine Corps League also preserves the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and observes the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular relevance to Marines. The Marine Corps provides aid through several programs. The Wounded Marines Program provides financial support, visits from Marine Corps League members, and off-site day trips to Marine Corps personnel at Naval medical centers and other locations. Through the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Program, Marine Corps League members supplement staff at VA hospitals and facilities in lifting morale and providing comfort and assistance to institutionalized veterans. Marine Corps League members also take part in the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots

campaign by raising funds, collecting toys, and distributing toys to children in need. Several groups are associated with the Marine Corps League. The Women Marines Association is dedicated to preserving the history of women in the U.S. Marine Corps. This group engages in youth education, the mentoring of Marines, charitable programs, and programs promoting patriotism. Another group, the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, was formed to promote the interests of the U.S. Marine Corps League and the Marine Corps League and to protect and advance the welfare of Marines and their dependents. Members participate in programs to preserve the rights and freedoms of all Americans and to foster values such as honesty, loyalty and family. The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is a youth program emphasizing values such as honesty, courage, and respect. The organization also focuses on education on and prevention of drug abuse.
