The Lions’ Chicken Potpie Is Roar-Some

Look Inside

Dayspring To Present “Freaky Friday” BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Ric Weaver of Bird-inHand, director of Dayspring Christian Academy’s upcoming production of “Freaky Friday,” thinks about the messages inherent in the show, he is transported back to his own teenage years. “With my parents, I had a moment of realization when I was able to step back and see them as humans and (see) that they were trying to do their best for me,” he said. “When I realized that, all the disagreements I had with them just dispersed.” The musical version of “Freaky Friday,” will be presented live at Dayspring, 120 College Ave., Mountville, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 25, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, in the school’s auditorium. The show tells the story of a mother and daughter who somehow swap bodies for 24 hours. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Mountville Lions Club members look forward to the chicken potpie fundraiser.

I

Much like the fall of 2021, the Mountville Lions Club will sell its chicken potpie in an adjusted format, hosting a takeout sale on Saturday, March 19, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. The sale will run from 10 a.m. until sold out, which typically happens at about 5 p.m. This past October, however, the chicken potpie sold out early, so members suggest coming as early as possible to get a tasty meal. The potpie will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. “The Lions do a lot of good activities for the community,” said Lions Club and chicken potpie committee member Jeff Weinman. “This is one of our major fundraisers to try to help support the community. We’re very thankful for the support people have given to us in the past, and we

look forward to making great chicken potpie for them in the future.” The Lions go through about 400 pounds of chicken, 200 pounds of potatoes, and 200 pounds of flour. Takeout containers will be provided, and there will be no dine-in option due to COVID-19 restrictions and the changing demographic of the club. In addition to chicken potpie, there will be homemade cakes and pies for sale as well as Lions brooms made by local Amish craftspeople. The Lions Club welcomes new members. “We have great camaraderie while working to make our world a better place,” noted Eric Weaver, chairman of the chicken potpie committee. n Lions Clubs International’s early years, Helen Keller was one of the first speakers to address the members, and she said she needed “knights of the blind.” Ever since, one of the core efforts of the Lions has been to help those who are blind or visually impaired. 2022 marks the 75th year that the Mountville Lions Club has served the community. Proceeds from the club’s fundraisers go toward specific nonprofits and projects. The Lions help maintain the pavilion at Mountville Park, contribute to scholarships for Hempfield High School graduates, and support the Beacon Lodge, a nonprofit camp in Union County that offers programs for those who are

blind or physically challenged in other ways. In addition to the Beacon Lodge, the club supports other programs that help people with vision impairment. The club also supports the Columbia Food Bank and organizes an annual Easter Egg Roll. This year’s Easter Egg Roll is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Mountville Park. Every year for over 60 years, the club has sold its homemade chicken potpie on the third Saturday of March and October. Club members cook the chicken, roll out the dough, and prepare the containers themselves. This fundraiser is one of the club’s major sources of revenue, along with having roller ball stands at the Mountville Fire Company’s Carnival and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival.

With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Pre-

ferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. From assisting with the births of piglets to mucking out the stalls, 16-year-old Riley and 13-year-old Morgan share the responsibilities of the family farm. Both girls are involved in 4-H and show pigs, beef, and goats. Passing a farm on to the next generation is often a challenge as children grow up and have interests apart from farming. “We’re blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With

Using social media ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be allows her to connect with people to to God,’ and that’s where the name share the culture and dispel myths (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that for those considering farming or they have one bad day. …We give achieving any goal, Tina responded, them the best life we can (before “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a that day),” she noted. Knights Season Closes in PIAA Opener BY ARA GRIGORIAN

The Hempfield boys’ basketball team traveled to Norristown for an opening-round game of the PIAA Class 6A state playoffs on Wednesday night, March 9. The Knights knew they had their work cut out for them as the second half tip-off had them trailing the District One runner-up Eagles 31-18. Hempfield poured it on in the third quarter, closing the gap by four points. There just were not enough points to go along with the momentum as Norristown prevailed 64-50, ending Hempfield’s season. John DiNolfi and Righteous Mitchell scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, to lead Norristown. Miguel Pena, who was recently Photo by Bob Diller voted Player of the Year and was a Parker Wolfe drives past Chambersburg’s Andon Martin during first-team all-star in the LancasterHempfield’s 49-47, District Three 6A fifth-place final win at home Lebanon League Section One all-star on March 4. voting by the league coaches, led all scorers with 19 points. He drilled three three-point jump shots in the process. Cole Overbaugh - also an L-L League first-team all-star - added 18 points. The Black Knights carried a 21-6 record into the Pennsylvania playoffs possessing potential madness in the month following February. Victory number 21 did have its share of wildness in the second half as the Knights edged Chambersburg 49-47 in what was the fifth-place consolation contest of the District Three 6A playoffs. The Knights managed to hold off the Trojans by a slim margin, outscoring the visitors 23-21 in the second half of a contest that was tied at halftime. Pena led a balanced offensive production. Nine of Pena’s 13 points came on three-point baskets. Ben Troyer poured in 12 points. He and Parker Wolfe each nailed one threepoint shot as did Mike Rieker. Both Rieker and Wolfe tallied seven points on the night while Chase Calabretta scored six. Michael Hester added four points.
