Dayspring Prepares To Stage “Little Women” BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ric Weaver, the director of the Dayspring Christian Academy production of the musical “Little Women,” first discussed the show with Dayspring’s Upper School principal, Dan Stone, in 2019. Stone had seen the play and loved it. Weaver was unfamiliar,
Mitzvah Moms have a mission to help others, delivering gift baskets to people affected by COVID-19. Helping to spread the love are (back row, from left) Josiah Krouse, Gina Krouse, Gena Harting, (front row, from left) Elaine Krouse, Ryder Harting and William Krouse.
Mitzvah Moms Give Back nspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had
“The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves ... There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth
and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them.
Lead cast members in Dayspring’s production of the musical “Little Women” include (from left) Zoe Martin, Emma Myers, Alison Bruner, and Emma Hasting.

but soon watched a video of the show. His reaction? “I don’t understand how this is not a more famous show,” said Weaver. “The music is so good, and the whole show (puts women in the spotlight).” The show was originally slated to run in the spring of 2020, and Weaver, in the director’s seat alone for the first time, said that the show almost made it to tech week when the state was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions. Now, with most of the same cast, the show will be presented live at Dayspring, 120 College Ave., Mountville, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, in the school’s auditorium.

“It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “ We are looking at the

Hempfield Foundation Awards Funds The Hempfield Foundation has awarded 13 teacher grants totaling nearly $25,000 for a wide array of innovative projects submitted by 21 teachers from throughout the Hempfield School District. These grants, combined with the more than $40,000 awarded to teachers at the start of the school year, will benefit students in all seven of the district’s elementary schools, its two middle schools and its high school. At Centerville Elementary School, a $2,087 grant was given for teachers Julie Engle and Amy Saporetti to provide beginning readers with decodable texts (books). Decodable texts aim to help readers build basic phonics skills and improve reading fluency. At Farmdale Elementary School, teacher Lisa Sempsey received $2,910 to purchase drums to enable students to explore pulse/beat, rhythm, layering ostinatos, music composition, improvisation, ensemble work, and world music. The team of Amy Grube, Cheryl Hudson-Kasun, and Christina Hoover at Landisville Primary Center received $3,000 to purchase books for all students and staff members so that everyone can participate in the school’s One School/One Book program.
Hoover was also granted $1,260 to continue access to the Headsprout app for firstgrade readers in the school. This resource is used to help children improve their reading skills. At Rohrerstown Elementary School, fifth-grade teachers Kathryn Kapchinske, Kristi Miller, and Aubree Lockard received $266 to purchase magazines to help their students better understand the 2020 election as well as $3,000 to support their project “Robotics, Circuits, STEM, OH MY!” At Centerville Middle School and Landisville Middle School, $500 went to teachers Nancy Schnelli and Patrice Hazlett to arrange a virtual visit with graphic novelist Matt Phelan for their students. English language arts teacher Melissa Kreider at Landisville Middle School received $1,400 to purchase books to help students better understand the events of the Holocaust through literature. Hempfield High School counselors Stefanie Scarborough and Kimberly Romero were granted $1,750 to create a relaxion lounge to help students catch their breath. Also at Hempfield High School, the Hempfield Foundation awarded business teacher Chris Hanusa with the first Tom A. Albright Memori-
al Teacher Grant for Career Development. Albright was a 1996 graduate of Hempfield High School, and the grant was made possible through a gift from fellow 1996 alumnus Daniel Ritzman. Hanusa will use the grant of $1,354 to bring the BizInnovator curriculum to Hempfield High School, giving students the opportunity to earn three transferable college credits from the University of Iowa. High school counselors Logan Albaugh, Lindsey Bauer and Greg Dietz received $2,600 to bring the program 5 Radical Minutes to Hempfield High School. This program helps students navigate the big issues they face each day. Also at the high school,
English language arts teacher Steven Lied was granted $2,436 to purchase essential equipment for his introduction to film course that he will teach through the College in High School Program associated with the University of Pittsburgh. Juniors and seniors who take this course can earn college credits. High school English language arts teachers Mike Pollis and Adam Hinde received $2,000 to purchase texts and audiovisual materials for their new class, Exploring Literature and Writing Through Sports. For more information about these grants or the Hempfield Foundation, readers may email hempfield foundation@gmail.org.

After delaying the production for more than a year, Weaver is happy to see the cast members enjoying rehearsals. “(The) kids have so much fun, and they have (grown) in their talent from last year,” shared Weaver, noting that both practice and life experience can help an actor hone his or her craft. As a veteran of the Cavod stage among other area venues, Weaver is pleased to be involved in theater again. “It’s fun being able to use my creativity to finally do a show after so long,” he said. According to Weaver, the music in the show will not disappoint audiences. “One of the biggest songs is ‘Some Things Are Meant to Be,’ which is sung by Jo and Beth. It’s a beautiful duet, where Beth is helping Jo let go and saying it’s OK,” said Weaver, who added that he uses the blocking to give a nod to the Lord. In addition, Myers will sing “Astonishing,” which Weaver noted is a standout. Another favorite is “Five Forever,” in which the girls are joined by their neighbor, Laurie, played by Gavin Knolle. “There’s a lot of action, singing, dancing, and fun, and the cast loves (that song),” shared Weaver. “It is one of their favorite songs (to perform).”

“Little Women” is set in Massachusetts during the Civil War. It is the story of the March sisters and their mother, who are waiting for the family patriach to return from battle. Jo, played by Emma Myers, is the second to the oldest of the four sisters. Along with her sisters, Meg, played by Emma Hasting; Beth, played by Alison Bruner; and Amy, played by Zoe Martin, Jo struggles with the limitations placed on her as a woman while coming of age in the Civil War era. Weaver said that the biggest challenges of staging the show involve COVID-19 restrictions. “Blocking and keeping people socially distant while conveying that they are a family that hugs and touches (is a challenge),” shared Weaver, who noted that the show may include some side hugs and hand-holding in romantic scenes that will be preceded and followed by the offstage use of hand sanitizer. “We are trying to keep the loving family feeling in the show without having people touching so much.”

Subaru of America Inc., joined by its two regional independent distributors, Subaru of New England and Subaru Distributors Corp., recently announced its continued commitment to supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by helping provide an additional 100 million meals to Feeding America. Each dollar helps to provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit
from the donation. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assistance is at record high levels. Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children. The Subaru franchise, with its 633 retailers nationwide, will work with Feeding America to disburse the donation to the organization’s 199 food banks across the U.S. To ensure that food banks with the highest need are served, Subaru will allocate 20% of the donation to national food programs and food banks
with the highest food insecurity rates and child food insecurity rates. Furthermore, participating Subaru retailers nationwide have made supplemental donations to their local Feeding America member food banks, currently totaling an additional 5.6 million meals to those in need, totaling 105 million meals donated from Subaru. Local dealerships in central Pennsylvania that will help provide 99,000 meals to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank include Faulkner Subaru Harrisburg, Apple Subaru and Lancaster County Motors Subaru. To join the effort, Subaru and its retailers invite consumers to make their own donation to

City Receives Grant For Art, Safety Project The City of Lancaster, in partnership with the SoWe neighborhood group and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership, has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to create a street mural at the intersection of West Strawberry Street, South Mulberry Street and West Vine Street in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood. A call for artists has been issued to select an artist to work with the neighborhood to create an artwork that
reflects a collective reimagining of the intersection. This project is supported by a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative. Support is also being provided by Sherwin Williams. The grant will help the City of Lancaster to continue following its Ten-Year Plan for Public Art. The call for artists is open to all professional artists who live in southcentral Pennsylvania. Applicants must be age 18 or older and have proven experience with mural paint-
ing and public engagement. Submissions will be judged based on examples of relevant work, experience and recommendations. Experience making large-scale paintings and working collaboratively to complete projects is preferred, but not required. The project is in its early stages and set to progress through the summer of 2021 with a goal of installation in early fall. A steering committee including Cabbage Hill residents, arts professionals and
a member of the Public Art Advisory Board has been established. Planners and engineers from the Department of Public Works will be involved in solving design problems alongside artists and neighbors. Interested artists can apply at https://form.jotform.com/2103 96571244152. Submissions will be accepted through Monday, March 22. For additional information about other projects in the Asphalt Art Initiative, visit http://asphaltart.bloomberg.org.

The first phase of the classroom was completed in the beginning of the 202021 school year with assistance from the Mountville Welfare Organization. This phase included a 1,500square-foot concrete patio with 10 metal picnic tables, which is now used by teachers as a setting where their
students can get some fresh air. The projected cost of adding the pavilion is more than $40,000. To learn more about the Mountville Elementary School PTO, visit www. hempfieldsd.org/domain/109. Questions can be directed to PTO president Shannon Douglas at 215-694-7867 or Mountville.PTO@gmail.com.

Ella Root charged ahead to a strong fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday, March 6, in the girls’ District Three Class 3A Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School. The Hempfield junior posted a time of 1:05.99 and earned 15 team points for the Black Knights, who finished 11th in the standings. “She had a very good swim,” said Hempfield coach Casey Lear. “Her time was very close to what she has been swimming all year. I was very happy with the way she swam.” With COVID restrictions, the events were designed with every other lane being used in the pool. “She wasn’t competing right next to someone,” Lear pointed out. “But she was able to overcome that challenge.”
Root was also part of the 200medley relay team, which placed eighth with a time of 1:49.91. Sophomore Caroline Schweigert led off the foursome followed by Root, senior Maggie Shaffer and sophomore Anna Koger at anchor. “We started strong with one sophomore and Anna Koger was the anchor,” Lear ex plained. “Anna dropped almost a full second as she swam a 24.93 - our freestyler at the end. She came out and impressed.” The relay squad earned 22 of Hempfield’s 44 team points. In the team standings Wilson and Hershey battled it out with the Hershey Trojans finishing second - only two points behind Wilson’s first-place total of 324. Shaffer finished 16th in the 200-individual medley (2:15.62) and rebounded with

defeated Hempfield 56-30, improving to 19-1 and advancing to the semis. Hempfield ended its season at 13-5. The Bulldogs’ Stevie Mitchell led all scorers with 23 points. Hempfield was led by Cole Overbaugh and sophomore Miguel Pena, each of whom scored eight. Brandon Hagel finished with five points. WRESTLING Reagan Lefevre competed in the PIAA Class-AAA West Super Regionals at Altoona on Saturday, March 6. He came away with two close, heartbreaking defeats. In the first round, the Hempfield star suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of eventual 145-pound champion John Altien of Norwin. In the consolations, Lefevre was unable to wrestle his way back in a 2-0 decision won by Hempfield Area Spartan Ty Linsenbigler.

an 11th-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 58.94 was 1/10 of a second behind 10th-place finisher Ally Weller of Hershey. “Maggie came ready for the relay,” said Lear. “She improved her time in some events but wasn’t too happy with her 200 IM. She came back and ended the day with high spirits.” More impressive was how she rebounded with the impressive 100 fly immediately after the 200 IM.
