Relevé is also the name of the new nonprofit organization focused on children’s health, which was founded by Viktor Yeliohin. Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) spring play director Tracy Wagner had a problem she needed to solve. “(I wanted) to highlight strong actors and give students who didn’t have the time to devote to ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ an opportunity to take part (in a show),” explained Wagner. To remedy the problem, she chose to present a one-act version of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” along with “Joseph.” Both plays will be presented at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, by a cast of 30 students on Thursday through Saturday, March 19 through 21, at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday, March 22. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will open the show with a 40minute presentation, followed by the 90minute “Joseph.” “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” is based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis. The plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Alexis Lenhart; Edmund, played by Xavier LeFevre; Susan, played by Maddi Lewis; and Peter, played by Jacob Fertal. The children have been removed from London as part of a wartime evacuation to the countryside home of a friend of their parents. The presentation begins with Lucy, the youngest sibling, opening a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch, portrayed by Natalie Knox, who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Peyton Sheaffer. A battle, for which Wagner has brought in fight choreographer Dan Burke, ensues as the children venture with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. LCHS students recently became International Thespian Society Troupe 8880, and student director Aria Yang will be at the helm for “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Wagner noted that video

projection has been added to the backdrop and that she is especially impressed with the makeup that will be used to portray the animals. “Joseph,” created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a musical based on the Genesis account of Joseph, played by Kameron Garcia. The son of Jacob, played by Jim Mikulski, Joseph rises to prominence from slavery in Egypt. Narrators will include Bernadette Fertal, Katie Lyle, Sheridan Riva, and Isabelle Titzer. Pharaoh will be played by Oliver Klemmer and Potiphar by Xavier LeFevre. The sungthrough musical is similar to a rock opera. Although the musical styles vary, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ’n’ roll, Wagner said that the music is not difficult. Challenges of staging the show have included the fast-paced and nearly constant choreography, including a children’s chorus of 23 made up of students from area Catholic elementary schools, and adding the special effects to make the show feel more like a rock concert. Challenges for members of the ensemble include playing multiple roles, where they have to develop their own personalities for their characters, which Wagner said really adds fun for the audience. Wagner said she had wanted to do “Joseph” for some time for several reasons. “It has a great story and theme of forgiveness,” she said. “You can really play with the quirky characters of all the brothers.” She hopes that audience members will leave feeling uplifted by the messages of both stories. “I hope they walk away singing the songs from ‘Joseph,’” she said. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to the LCHS spring plays may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310.

When Lancaster Bible College (LBC) senior Ken Hatridge considered what his senior project should entail, he decided to focus on his future. “My passion is to work with choirs and orchestras within the church once I graduate, said Hatridge, who has been interning under Calvary Church choir and orchestra director John Frye for more than a year. Working with the Calvary choir of about 90 and orchestra with up to 40 members, Hatridge will present his senior project, titled “Thirsty? Come and Drink, Let the Rivers Flow, a concert to be held in LBC’s Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, March 26, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening of worship is free. The concert will include solos by Hatridge, such as “Thirsty, and “If I Stand, along with the Ray Boltz song “Thank You. Hatridge will also solo, accompanied by the choir, on “Is He Worthy? Other choir selections will include “The Solid Rock, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and “All the Way My Savior Leads Me. The Calvary orchestra will play “Festi-
val of Praise Medley, and Hatridge will lead the congregation on “My Eyes Are Dry and “Fairest Lord Jesus. Hatridge noted that the concert will conclude with a hymn sing and be followed by a time of refreshment and fellowship. Prior to coming to LBC, Hatridge lived near Bath, Maine, where he worked as a timber framer at the Shelter Institute. “This is career number two, said Hatridge, who grew up in southern Missouri. During the 13 years he worked as a timber framer, Hatridge also served as a volunteer music minister, running choir rehearsals at a nearby church. “About three and a half years ago, God called me to full-time ministry, said Hatridge, who began matriculating through the LBC accelerated undergraduate online degree program. In December 2017, Hatridge completed his associate degree in biblical studies. Shortly thereafter, a decision was made to continue his education toward a worship arts degree at LBC. “We uprooted family and came down here, said Hatridge, who brought his wife, Jennifer, and three of his four children to Lancaster. A video feature in the concert will utilize Hatridge’s woodworking skills. “I do woodturning, and that video features me turning a wooden goblet, said Hatridge.

Ballet Performance from pg 1 at Franklin & Marshall College, 602 College Ave., Lancaster. The program has been created by Yeliohin, an accomplished ballet dancer from the Ukraine and the VYIBA ballet master. Yeliohin opened his Lancaster studio in 2010 and created Relevé as a way to express his gratitude for 10 years of community support. “This is my mission in my life: to have every dancer know they are valuable and capable of anything and to give back to the community through the beauty and glory of the great art form of ballet,” Yeliohin commented. Principal dancers from the New Jersey Ballet, the Colorado Ballet, and the Joffrey Ballet are slated to perform on May 2. Yeliohin said he hopes that these top professional dancers, in conjunction with local ballerinas, will send a powerful message of not just standing up for a cause,
but dancing for a cause. Proceeds from the Relevé gala performance will be donated to the American Cancer Society (ACS), specifically in the area of pediatric cancer. “Funds raised help ACS fund and conduct breakthrough research and give cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support,” said ACS spokesperson Erik McGaughey. Tickets may be purchased now, and Marhevka noted that the more tickets are sold, the greater the amount of funding that Relevé can give to the ACS. Readers may visit www.vyballet.com and click on “Relevé” to view ticket prices and the seating chart. Reservations may be made by calling 717-419-6688 or emailing relevedanceorg@gmail.com.

son came back to us two years ago and asked if they got people to help fund it, would we do the show.” The cast features seven actors and a pit of five musicians, two of whom - guitarist Ron McVey and banjo player Tim Kilby - are members of Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. “It is a popular play, and the reason it’s popular is the music,” Doreen said, describing the music as Southern gospel and bluegrass, featuring close harmonies. “The score includes well-known Southern gospel hymns that people love, plus a few originals,” she said. The entire show takes place in a North Carolina Baptist church, which is led by Pastor Oglethorpe (Tim Creighton). After the guest musicians burst onto the scene and sing their first number, Sanders family patriarch Burl (Tim Strawser) introduces his wife, Vera (Nancy Snyder, who is also the production’s music director); their daughter June (Sarah Shirk); and their fraternal twins Denise (Sophie Hatalsky) and Dennis (Doug Hostetler). Burl’s brother, Stanley (Ken

The singing Sanders family is heading into town … in North Carolina in June 1938. The family’s entre into performing traditional and bluegrass gospel songs after a fiveyear hiatus is the subject of “Smoke on the Mountain,” the latest show to be produced by the Promise Players theater group. Performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26; Fridays, March 20 and 27; and Saturdays, March 21 and 28. Matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m. on March 21 and 28 and on Sundays, March 22 and 29. Seats may be reserved by visiting http://lampcob.com/promise-players. Payment will be accepted at the door. Children age 12 and under may donate nonperishable food items for local foods banks in lieu of payment. Free child care will be provided for children under age 6. The stage will be placed in the corner of the sanctuary and the chairs will be rearranged so that even those seated in the back corners will have a sightline to the action. The new stage location will accommodate a larger audience, too. Promise Players shows often sell out, and high attendance is anticipated for “Smoke on the Mountain.” “About 10 years ago, someone approached us and said, ‘You ought to do it.’ We looked into it, but it cost $3,000 plus the cost of scripts, music, and other production costs,” Promise Players director and founder Doreen Creighton recalled. “The same per-
Hess), has tagged along, as he was recently released from prison. As the musical unfolds, each family member shares a story about their beliefs. In a reference to Stanley’s time in prison, Support for Prison Ministries has been selected as the beneficiary of the show’s proceeds. “It’s a different role for me,” Hess said about Uncle Stanley. “In past shows, my parts were more comical. This is a more serious role for me.” That is not to say that Stanley is an entirely solemn character. The interaction between the Sanders brothers is often humorous, Doreen noted. June’s antics also provide some levity as she believes she has a gift for interpretive signing, which draws heavily from pantomime. This is Shirk’s first time appearing with Promise Players. “It’s the biggest role I’ve ever had, so that’s exciting,” she said. Hatalsky and Hostetler are also Promise Players newcomers. Additionally, Hatalsky is new to the area, and making the cast has eased the transition. “When I moved down, I didn’t know anybody, and (the cast) felt like a family,” she commented. Hostetler said he auditioned for the show because he likes the music. He will play guitar on two songs. Hatalsky occasionally plays piano and Shirk takes a turn on the washboard and tambourine during the show. The primary accompanists, however, are McVey, Kilby, fiddler Randie Rineer, mandolinist Larry Russell, and bass player Abby Hylton. Dorothy Smith plays accordion and appears as Myrtle to Doreen’s Maude, two unspeaking characters referenced in the script. For more information about “Smoke on the Mountain,” readers may visit http://lampcob.com/promise-players or call the church at 717-464-2050 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

area church choir director. Dr. Karl E. Moyer, co-organist at the Marietta church, will accompany the choir. The Rev. Regina Bautista, rector of the Marietta church, will read the parts of the service that are commonly spoken, and Reese will intone those texts that are usually sung. The congregation will be invited to join the choir in singing several hymns. A sermon or organ recital is often added to the Choral Evensong service, and Reese will precede the musical prayer service with a half-hour of organ music on the church’s organ. The major work of his recital will be the Prelude and Fugue in EFlat by Bach. The fugue is often referr to as the “St. Anne Fugue.” Two other organ pieces will round out the recital, and at the close of the Evensong service, Reese will play “Piece Heroïque” by César Franck. A reception will follow in the social hall, where the congregation may greet Reese and the choir. For more information, readers may contact Bautista at 717557-3682.

This will be the second return visit of this choir and Reese, organist-choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster. The service will include Scripture, prayer, and music - a tradition that began in cathedrals and university chapels in England and spread across the entire English-speaking world. The main choral singing will include settings by John Dykes of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis texts, the two traditional choral pieces in this service. Dykes is known around the world for his hymn tune to the “Holy, Holy, Holy” text and in the U.S. as well for the music of the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” The choir will also sing the anthem “Give Ear, O Lord, and Visit Me” by James A. Lancaster County Career & Technology Center There were approximately 1,300 students enrolled for the 2018-19 school year at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), which is comprised of the Willow Street, Brownstown, Mount Joy and Health Sciences campuses. Students in 12th grade - from all of the 16 high schools in the county - who have an interest in the trades attend one of those campuses, and adult education programs are also offered at LCCTC. The Mount Joy campus offers a range of programs, including welding, mechanical engineering, precision machining, culinary arts and more. Dave Smith, principal at the Mount Joy campus, noted the school’s welding program has seen a huge increase in interest and enrollment. “We built a brand-new lab, specifically for the adult side, so they can run some trainings during the day

when our high school side is being used,” Smith said. The Mount Joy campus also received a grant from BB&T Bank (which the school’s foundation and other employers matched) that helps to provide a free 10-week training session for welding and a free 17-week training session for electric mechanical. “Our hope is that they continue on with us in a full-time program,” said Amber Kreger, LCCTC’s director of higher and continuing education at the Mount Joy campus. Of LCCTC’s health programs, Smith observed, “We’re looking to expand our high school side and some of the initial introduction courses and, hopefully, guide some of our students into our LPN programs or into other institutions that have a need.” The school’s residential carpentry program provides students with hands-on experience building actual homes. “Our residential carpentry students do the framing, the siding, the roof and all those areas, and then the electrical students from Brownstown come down and do the wiring,” Smith explained. Students in other programs, such as HVAC, plumbing and painting, provide their expertise, as well. For more information about LCCTC, readers may visit www.lancasterctc.edu. lish education and all industrial trades.” Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology - the state’s first technical college - was established in Lancaster in 1905 with 15 students on its roster. Today, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology boasts 1,200 students - men and women - and offers 23 associate degree programs in areas of study such as carpentry, plumbing, cabinetmaking and wood technology. The college’s mastery of the building trades is reflected in the row homes students began building in Lancaster city during the 1950s. In the fall of 2016, the school branched out and began building homes in the Millersville area. In 2017, noted sophomore carpentry instructor Dan McCord, students’ custom home won Best of Show honors in the Parade of Homes. The 2019 house took first-place honors for exterior, interior design, kitchen, bath and décor in the Townhouse/Duplex Division I category, claiming Best of Show honors for that division. McCord agreed that all areas of the skilled trades are in need of workers. “We have people coming to us saying, ‘We need carpenters, we need roofers, we need carpet installers,’” he said. “Our president, Dr. William Griscom, is always trying to grow the school for that reason because there’s such a demand in the trades.” More information about Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is available at www.stevenscollege.edu. For those considering training for a job as a skilled labor or trade worker, Smith stressed the financial benefits of pursuing such a career. “Somebody in welding can start off at $14 or $15 an hour, easily, with benefits, and make a very good living being a welder, machinist or carpenter,” Smith said. McCord also spoke to the economic nature of pursuing a degree at a trade school. “When they graduate here (at Thaddeus Stevens), they don’t have all that debt because we’re not that expensive,” he noted. “It’s a winwin situation.”
