Reaching Out To Support Grieving Parents Ministry Looks To Expand Offerings BY ANN MEAD ASH

BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware. The decades-old ministry is part of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved couples and single parents. See BASIS pg 2

Supervisors meeting. The Hempfield Area Fire Services Commission is made up of members of the East Hempfield Township Board of Supervisors, the East Petersburg Borough Council, the East Peterburg Fire Company, the Hempfield Fire Department, and the Rohrerstown Fire Company, as well as citizen-at-large representatives

from each municipality. The chief fire official position was created to administer a regional fire services program for the municipalities to ensure the protection and preservation of health, safety, and wellness for municipal citizens and businesses through increased uniformity and continuity of fire protection while

minimizing operating costs and maximizing volunteer recruitment and retention. Kottmyer retired from York City Fire Department as a deputy chief and has since served as the EMS manager for WellSpan Health and the director of education for VFIS, a division of Glatfelter Insurance Group.

In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for

all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings. Readers who are interested in joining or forming a BASIS group may call Dan at 717-8594777 or email d s t e i n m a n @hvmi.org. More information about BASIS may be found at www.hvmi.org.

With COVID restrictions, the group could not hold either event this past year. Instead, the organization had to think up new ways to raise funds. “We set up a new website, www.donegalcreek.org, for people to make a minimum donation of $10,” Crouser noted. “Upon receiving their donation, we send out a membership pin and card as well as add them to the email

list for future events like work parties, meetings and trout stocking the Donegal and Little Chiques creeks.” DFCA meetings are held the third Monday of every month, either at Amato’s Woodfire Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mount Joy or, in warmer weather, at the East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area. Crouser added that the membership drive has a goal of $3,000. “That’s the number we’d like to get to in order to be able to stock and maintain our trout nursery, pay our electric bill and cover other expenses,” he explained. The nursery is a cooperative project with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. DFCA became a nonprofit organization last year and is working on obtaining a second trout nursery in Mount Joy. “We are also working on a major stream bank restoration project with Donegal Trout Unlimited,” Crouser stated. Membership in the club hovers around 300 people, he

“Abstract Spectrum,” 17year-old Joseph James Roach’s first solo show, will be exhibited at Mulberry Art Studios in April, Autism Awareness Month. “Abstract Spectrum” will open with a First Friday reception on April 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. and will run through Friday, April 30. Ten percent of all proceeds will be donated to Aaron’s Acres. Joseph, who has autism, struggled at school, trying to find his niche. When he was in eighth grade at Manheim Central Middle School, his art teacher, Julia Hibshman,

gave him full rein to express himself through art and encouraged him in this pursuit. What were at first simply scribbles soon developed into intricate abstract art pieces. Now a prolific artist, Joseph will display a collection of vibrant pieces in “Abstract Spectrum.” Joseph’s goal is to visit other schools and share with struggling students that if they do not give up, amazing things can happen. For more information and to preview the artwork, readers may visit www.mulberry artstudios.com.

company’s provision of policy manuals, mission and value statements, financial statements, and other procedural documents to the Samaritan Center. The review process also includes an employee survey focused on ethical conduct and a virtual or in-person visit from trained site visitors. The results of this process are compiled into a multipage report, which is then shared with an anonymous selection committee made up of business owners and industry leaders within the Lancaster County community. The committee selects the award recipient after

reviewing the reports. An evening awards ceremony will honor all the nominees and announce the recipient. This year, the event will be held on Thursday, July 22, at the Lancaster Country Club. A hybrid in-person and livestreamed ceremony, the awards program will feature keynote speaker Jan Bergen, current CEO and president of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Brian Roche, WGAL anchor, will serve as the master of ceremonies. To learn more about the Ethics in Business Awards, readers may visit www.scc lanc.org/ethics-in-business.
