Almost Like Being There PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual By Ann Mead Ash
When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through

For nearly two months, life has looked a little bit different for Lancaster County residents, and that includes individuals served by Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Friendship Community is a faith-based, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Friendship employs almost 400 team members whose roles See Friendship Community pg 3

Members from a Friendship Community residential home had fun participating in the organization’s “Black & White Day,” a themed day celebrating humor and unity within the organization.
Amid a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), Lancaster EMS first responders are now wearing reusable isolation gowns, thanks to the generosity of community supporters. The idea came from Lancaster EMS paramedic Emma Einwechter, who noted that the organization’s supplies of disposable gowns were running low and fashioned a protective garment out of a shower curtain. She asked her mother, Amy Raine of Strasburg, to help out. “I do like to sew,” Raine commented. “I sewed for a long time.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised in 2007 that isolation gowns should be worn to protect See Lancaster EMS pg 2

gowns, Raine had sewn about 160 cloth masks for Lancaster EMS. Masks are smaller and quicker, and cotton fabric is easier to sew. “Because (the plastic used for the gowns) was thin enough, it would sew easily on the sewing machine, but it ... didn’t give like fabric does, so the seams didn’t always line up, but we weren’t going for beauty. We were going for function,” Raine commented. “I was pretty tired of plastic, that’s for sure. I’m not sure what my next project is. I just hope it doesn’t have to do with plastic.” Even though sewing gowns was not the easiest project, Raine was happy to do it. “The whole time, I was thinking of my daughter and her co-workers. It was pretty neat to be making (gowns) for somebody specific.” Lancaster EMS marketing and development coordinator Marisa Seubert noted that Filling’s Clothing donated a cloth zip garment bag for each ambulance and other service vehicles so providers can store contaminated gowns after client contact and before sanitization. While the need for handsewn items has been met at Lancaster EMS, sewists who would like to help health care workers to be protected may make masks for WellSpan Health. Information is available at www.wellspan.org /media/2364423/WellSpan -Facemask-making-instruc tions.pdf, or readers may find a step-by-step tutorial at https://goodsstores.com/blogs/ a-good-word-blog/how-to-sew-a -face-mask. health care workers’ arms and exposed body areas from coming into contact with clients’ clothing, blood, bodily fluids, secretions, and excretions. Isolation gowns that are effective against COVID19 are typically made from nonwoven polypropylene, a synthetic material whose construction offers increased protection from liquid penetration of virus-containing moisture droplets. Knitted and woven fabrics bought from a fabric store would not be effective at preventing liquid penetration, and Lancaster EMS wanted protective gear that could be quickly cleaned and returned to use, so Einwechter and Raine researched the idea and found a pattern online. They realized that cutting pattern pieces from shower curtains would produce a lot of waste and would not be cost effective. Lowe’s at Greenfield had drop cloth material in 10-by-25-foot rolls that fit the bill, and the store donated a number of rolls to the cause. Lancaster EMS requested 160 gowns, which was more than one person could sew quickly. Raine’s Amish neighbors agreed to help, and within about 10 days, all of the gowns were completed. “My husband, Mark, did most of the cutting out. Our house was basically a factory,” Raine said, adding that after the pieces were cut, she kept some for herself to sew and delivered others to her neighbors for them to complete. “It was just great that I could go to my neighbors. They’re my friends,” Raine said, adding that the sewists were eager to assist. “I couldn’t have asked for a better response.” Prior to sewing the isolation

Friendship Community from pg 1 with team members wearing masks as the masks inhibit visualization of facial expression and can alter verbal communication,” Schuit explained. “Furthermore, some individuals have even exhibited new behaviors related to their fears. Team members have needed to utilize new techniques in order to maintain their established trusting relationships with individuals in order to safely wear the masks for any extended period of time.” Following established routines is important for many of Friendship’s clients, so staff members sought out ways to alleviate the stress caused by the shutdown’s disruption of regular activities. Two parents had a source for iPads, and Friendship was able to obtain enough of the electronic tablets so that every home and support location could have one. The iPads have enabled Friendship clients to regularly connect with family members and friends and to engage in meaningful activities. “The acquisition of these iPads has also enabled the spiritual nurture and community life coordinator to connect individually, provide group prayer meetings, and orchestrate uplifting daily videos and songs,” Schuit said. Friendship Community is a nonprofit organization, and it had scheduled its 17th annual Friendship Heart Gallery art auction on March 26. That event has been rescheduled for
Thursday, July 16, and the FEST, Auction, and 5K has been postponed until Saturday, Sept. 26. The golf tournament and anniversary dinner are still slated to run as planned on Thursday, Sept. 10, and Thursday, Oct. 22, respectively. range from direct support professionals and nurses to behavioral specialists and art instructors, as well as a full complement of administrative staff members. As a result of the shutdown, the day programs - including the Friendship Heart Gallery studio and Meaningful Day Academy - were immediately closed. Instead of Friendship’s clients spending time together in one place, each individual had to stay in his or her respective home. This resulted in staff members having to provide around-the-clock care at each home, when they had not previously done that, and that prompted schedule changes, flexibility, and creativity. Friendship Community also formed an urgent response team to prepare for the possibility of illness. Team members made sure to maintain direct contact with clients, clients’ families, and government authorities at all levels, and they also implemented protocols to keep everyone safe. Friendship CEO Gwen Schuit, BSN, M.Ed., NHA, credited two sewing circles - Sewing Hope, a group associated with Worship Center, and Bird-in-Hand Fabric - with providing cloth masks for Friendship’s staff members and clients. Schuit noted that while the masks are protective, they pose significant challenges. “(Some clients) have struggled

GOTR Launches “At Home” Curriculum May 5K To Go Virtual By Ann Mead Ash
Under normal circumstances, Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a 10week in-person program that couples physical activity with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. The GOTR curriculum is designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. However, since mid-March, the 1,400 girls in Lancaster and Lebanon counties who were to take part in GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances. Since they are not attending school due to COVID19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this
situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in
place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part, are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. The annual GOTR spring 5K, which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates
Suicide Prevention Event Posted The Lancaster County Suicide Provention Coalition will meet on Thursday, May 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Blair Room at the Community Services Building, 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster. Mental Health America of Lancaster County educators Lois Walters and Dennis Walters will present “How to Balance Caring
for Our Wounded While Caring for Ourselves.” To learn more about the Walterses and their presentation, readers may visit www.stopsuicidelancaster.org/a wareness-and-events/. The training will help attendees identify warning signs of suicide as well as address simple methods of communicating to hurting individuals and
de-escalating heated situations. Additionally, crisis situations or critical incidents can occur within the church, requiring a plan of action to handle such situations. Steps toward self-care and resiliency will be emphasized along with a review of community resources. Also, attendees will be encouraged to share their concerns with a panel of experts
of Lancaster,” said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,” explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.” This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,” said West. Interested individuals may register at www.gotrlancaster.org /5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our in the suicide prevention field. The presentation will cater to church pastors, clergy and staff for crisis management of potential critical situations in the church; however, anyone who experiences frequent demands for support and services is welcome to attend. The North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster planned to host its fifth annual Cosmic Bash this spring. Due to the coronavirus, the museum faced the decision of whether to cancel or reschedule the event, which supports its annual budget for STEM education in the community. The event is the largest fundraiser of the museum’s year. Additionally, other large revenue sources for the museum are
who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

Students Raise Funds, Schreiber Slates Collect Items Pajama Gala collection drive of household goods, such as paper towels, hand soap, and cleaning products to donate to North Star. They collected more than 250 items. North Star Initiative, an organization based in Lancaster County, was founded to support women who are survivors of human trafficking by providing them with care through a Christcentered focus. The END IT Movement focuses on educating people on the global issue of human trafficking. NHS members also showed the film “Priceless” to high school students to raise awareness about the international scope of the human trafficking industry.
The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development had to cancel its annual gala in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All purchased gala tickets will be honored when the event is rescheduled at a future date. Instead, Schreiber will hold its first-ever Pajama Gala. The items that were donated for the silent and live auctions for the in-person event will be up for bids in a virtual auction. Bidding began on April 29. More than 80 items are available, including gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants; sessions with local photographers; golf lessons; jewelry and purses; stays at vacation homes in Wildwood Crest, N.J., and Killington, Vt.; a day on the Chesapeake Bay aboard a 40-foot boat; and theme park passes.
Quality Driveway Seal Coating
The online gala will also feature a prize drawing for a Lititz Getaway that includes a hotel stay, restaurant gift cards, a sampling of chocolates, and a beverage. Readers may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/paja magala to preview the items; participate in the bidding, which will end at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20; and purchase tickets for the prize drawing. All funds raised will support Schreiber’s services and programs. Those who are unable to participate may support Schreiber by making a direct donation through the online auction page. For more details about the auction, readers may contact events@schreiberpediatric.org or call Erica at 717-393-0425, ext. 105.
