A piece of history restored

Thirty years ago, Elam Herr discovered a little piece of history in his friend’s barn: a sleigh that dates back to the late 19th century. Although Elam immediately recognized the elegant design and rarity of the sleigh, it had seen better days; years of inactivity while the sleigh was in storage had left it in a poor state. Recognizing that the sleigh would become unsalvageable if it was not restored soon, Elam requested to buy it from his friend to begin repairing it. Elam’s friend gladly gave him custody of the artifact, and Elam got to work.

Softball Weekend will return to Mountville

Schreiber

Center for Pediatric Development will kick off its 41st annual Softball Weekend on Friday, June 2, at 6 p.m. at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. The tournament-style event will run through the weekend until Sunday, June 4, at 6 p.m. Teams may sign up for two- to three-hour blocks of playing time and will be divided into two tournaments: marathon play and competitive double-elimination play. Marathon play will include recreational games for players of all ages and abilities, while the competitive tournament will be held for more experienced men’s and coed teams. The winning team from each division of the competitive tournament will receive a trophy. The games for marathon play will be held Friday and Saturday, the coed competitive division will play on Saturday and the men’s competitive division will play on Sunday.

For marathon play, teams of 12

to 16 players will be matched with opponents based on their skill level. A kids’ game will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, which will include clients of Schreiber Pediatric and their families. Local radio hosts Nipsey and Vince Augello from 105.7 The X will participate in the kids’ game, as well as local news anchor Matt Barcaro. “It’s a great way to come out and have some fun while supporting a good cause,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber Pediatric.

The tradition of hosting an annual Softball Weekend was first coordinated by retired police officers Harold Gainer and Bob Race. When Gainer was a young police officer in Hempfield, he created the event to raise money for Schreiber Pediatric and was joined by Race a few years later. Since the first event was held, over $2 million has been raised for Schreiber Pediatric.

“It’s a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. People are doing something that they enjoy, but they know that

it’s also benefiting the families that count on Schreiber every year,” said Masengarb. “People always come out with their families and friends to enjoy a competitive but fun day.” Softball Weekend is one of Schreiber Pediatric’s largest fundraisers of the year. The money raised from Softball Weekend will help Schreiber Pediatric to complete several projects aimed at expanding its facility and therapy services. Currently, Schreiber Pediatric has a waiting list for many of its services, and it hopes that the expansion projects will make its services more accessible to those seeking treatment. “We want to be able to meet the needs of everyone. The Softball Weekend fundraiser helps us to continue to provide services to clients and families,” Masengarb said. Each player in both the marathon play and competitive games must complete a waiver prior to the first game. To acquire a waiver, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/events/ softball-weekend or contact Masengarb at 717-393-0425, ext. 105.

As Elam began to work on the sleigh, he was faced with a variety of challenges; multiple pieces were broken and separated, the paint was almost fully worn off and the upholstery had been eaten away by mice. He enlisted the services of a local blacksmith and a professional upholsterer to repair the few damaged parts he couldn’t fix himself. After a couple years of hard work, Elam was able to return the sleigh to its former glory. “I wanted to restore it because I love history and

I love working with my hands,” Elam said. “It took a couple years, but I had the time and I really enjoyed it.”

The sleigh is what is called a “cutter,” a mode of transportation with two seats and drawn by one horse. It was commonly used in the 19th century, and this particular sleigh was likely made by a local blacksmith. Elam explained that during the winter months of that time period, blacksmiths would often

Lasagna Love delivers kindness

There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.

“We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”

Mauer began volunteering with

Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.

“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”

Knights post 7-4 baseball win over Township

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Whenever Hempfield and Manheim Township meet in a sporting event, it’s a pretty big deal.

When the Black Knights played host to the Blue Streaks on Friday, May 5, it was a key Section One baseball game between the archrival schools.

Having split their two previous meetings - an 8-5 Township win on May 2 and a 3-2 win by the Knights at Hempfield on April 12 - the two

met again in Landisville.

It was Hempfield’s turn.

Drew Benchich gave the offense the early spark, slugging a two-run double. The Knights added three more in the third inning. Stephen Katch and Logan Harelson RBI singles helped produce more offense as Hempfield went on to win 7-4.

The victory raised the Knights’ record to 12-2 in league play with a secure spot atop the Section One standings.

Katch would go on to hit a two-run

double in the bottom of the fourth to answer a Township rally in the visitors’ half of the inning.

You’ve heard of the Monday morning quarterback. Hempfield senior Dawson Kuhn was the Monday afternoon reliever as he extinguished a Penn Manor threat in the bottom of the fourth inning. He escaped a bases-loaded jam and the Knights held on for a 3-2 victory on the road.

Benchich doubled to drive in Hempfield’s third run of the game. Manor pitcher Brayden Eckert also escaped further trouble, leaving two men in scoring position.

Despite the lost opportunity for a big inning, Kuhn worked with the one-run lead and recorded a gameending strikeout.

TENNIS

Cooper Lehman has faced challenges this spring.

Not only has he faced some tough competition in the L-L League boys’ tennis meets, he has had to fight an ankle injury late in

the season.

They say it isn’t what obstacles you face, but how you respond to them that matter.

Cooper Lehman responded by earning first place in the District Three Class 3A singles championships. By winning the district title, he also qualified for states.

“Fortunately, now, his ankle has been pretty good,” said Hempfield tennis coach Mindi Bell. “He wore a brace through it. It wasn’t much of a factor for him in districts.

“He is going to have to wear it for states,” Bell added.

Lehman defeated Hayden Koons of Dallastown in a come-frombehind championship match on Saturday, May 6 at the Hershey Racquet Club. Lehman and Koons entered the tournament seeded first and second, respectively. Koons topped Cumberland Valley’s William Ong, the number three seed, in the semis.

Koons took the first set of the championship match 6-1 only to

have Lehman come back to win a tight 7-6 (8-6) second set followed by a 6-2 victory.

“They play each other quite often and know each other well,” said Bell. “Koons was controlling a lot of the points. The first set was tough. Cooper was having some trouble handling him.

“In the second set, he was able to adjust,” Bell continued. “He had to fight off two match points in the second set. They both played very well.”

For the Hempfield sophomore, it was a repeat for the district crown.

Lehman opened with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Andrew Chronister from Dallastown in the opening round, Friday, May 5. Later that day he defeated Daniel Boone’s Sam Shank 6-1, 6-0.

In the semis, Cooper topped Cooper Wheeler of Red Lion 6-1, 6-1.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

“We were co-champs, but we have the tiebreaker with Warwick,” head coach Chris Landis said.

Heading into the season’s final weekend, a solid outing by Carley Ernst helped Hempfield nip Manheim Township 3-2 on the road Friday, May 5. Ernst struck out 12 batters, allowing two runs on four hits.

As for winning the section, Landis spoke of the trials the squad underwent.

“Coming into the season we had Carley, Avery Landis and other returning players,” he said. “I was surprised how we struggled early in the season to score runs.

“Middle of the season we were fourth in the section,” continued the coach. “We started to climb up and we caught Warwick. We haven’t been in the L-L League playoff since 2017.”

The Knights simply needed to keep winning as hopes of catching Manheim Township for the Section One crown started to dwindle. That was precisely what they continued doing as they topped Penn Manor 93 in Section One girls’ lacrosse action on the road Monday, May 8.

Hempfield improved to 8-2 in league play - two games behind Manheim Township.

The Comets could not rise out of a 6-1 halftime deficit. Isabelle Masengarb led Hempfield with five goals. Whitney Hershey added two goals while Aubrie Buckwalter scored one.

Ella Ashton made two saves to preserve the Hempfield.

SOFTBALL

On the way to claiming the Section One crown, the softball team won five of its final six section games and finished the regular season with a 14-4 record (11-4 league).

Penn Manor used a couple of big innings to defeat the Knights 11-1 on Monday, May 8. The Comets swept the season series over their Section One rivals, handing Hempfield three of its four defeats.

“I can’t remember the last time we beat them,” Landis said.

The Knights roared back with a 12-1 win at Cedar Cliff the next day. Avery Landis went 3-4 with a double and two runs scored. Kali Peifer (2-2) slugged a homer and a double, driving in two runs.

Sydney Weaver went six innings before the game was called on the 10-run rule. Weaver allowed only unearned one run on six hits.

“She has a change-up and she’ll throw strikes,” Landis said of Weaver. “She’s a good pitcher to have so Carley can have a rest.”

VOLLEYBALL

The Knights earned back-to-back wins to close out the regular season with an 8-4 league record. On Thursday, May 4, they defeated McCaskey 3-0 on the road. On Tuesday night, May 9, they blanked Cedar Crest, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17.

Elam initially restored the sleigh as a personal project. After using it as a Christmas display for a few years and placing it back in storage, he

Two years ago, Elam dusted off the sleigh and placed it on permanent loan to the Amos Herr House Foundation, where he now serves as president of the board. “I had been on the board for a number

Lasagna Love frompg 1

Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked

Both exhibits will be open until Thursday, June 1, during LCAA’s regular hours, which can be

or baked.

Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through homecooked meals. Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did some-

thing for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.

Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t

have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”

found at www.lcaaonline.org.

The spring membership show includes artwork from a variety of LCAA members. Each member was able to enter up to two pieces of work for the show. The paintings will be judged, and awards will be given out in both the professional and nonprofessional categories.

Stepanaski named her exhibit after the unofficial title given to her by the community, due to her high stature and signature widebrimmed hat. Stepanaski, who is 6 feet tall, said that she wears the hat to prevent her eyes from straining while she paints. “Sometimes, people don’t even recognize me without my hat,” Stepanaski added. “It’s just how everyone knows me.”

“Tall Lady Wearing a Hat” primarily features paintings of landscapes, but also includes a few portraits of animals. Stepanaski is an avid gardener and loves to be immersed in nature, where she finds rest and inspiration for her work. “It speaks to your soul. I always prefer to be out in nature,” Stepanaski said.

All of Stepanaski’s paintings are made from pastel paints, and she is a member of the Maryland Pastel Society. Stepanaski said that she prefers to use pastel paints due to the purity of their color. All types of paint utilize the same color pigments, but they are differentiated by the substance that is added to

make the paint: oil paint is thick and viscous and watercolor paint is thin and translucent. Pastel paint is distinguishable from other types of paint due to the fact that very little binder is applied to the pigment. “When you apply pastel paint, there’s a quality that is visually exciting because of the way it reflects light,” Stepanaski said.

As a member of the Maryland Pastel Society, Stepanaski gathers with other pastel painters to compete in art shows. The group also holds quarterly meetings, where members discuss pastel painting techniques and watch demonstrations from guest artists.

Nearly half a million served

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.

Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and

others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.

Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in

grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently. Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin

Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield, Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg. Most volunteer tasks require about a two-hour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do two-hour shifts but if someone only has an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends.

Readers who are interested in volunteering for the organization may visit www.powerpacksproject.org/ volunteer or call 717-517-9220.

“Cedar Crest has a great team, and we knew they would come out swinging so give credit to them,” head coach Kenny Eiser said. “Our boys hung in there and gave us a shot to win. We made a run and pulled it out.”

Ethan Earhart collected 13 kills. Cole Jackson’s precision passing led to 36 assists. He also registered three blocks while Brady Rigard racked up 16 digs and Finley Hunt and Conor Eby each served up two aces.

“I cannot speak highly enough of Cole and Brady,” added Eiser. “Both of them have exceeded our expectations in filling roles of us losing an all-state libero and all-district setter.”

Earhart and Tyler Bechtel each finished with six kills to help lead Hempfield in the McCaskey match. The Knights won 25-18, 25-17 and 25-13. Rigard not only served up five aces, but he also posted 10 digs. Jackson added 26 assists while Chase Calabretta notched three blocks.

The Hempfield boys topped Warwick 98-51 on the road, Monday, May 8, in a Section One meet as Tate Martin placed first in both hurdling events as well as taking second in the 100-meter dash.

“This was a positive meet to end the regular season,” said head coach Curt Rogers.

Julia Sweigart won the girls’ 100meter hurdles plus a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles. Mya Thompson won the 100 dash and freshman Izzy Heisey the 200.

Hempfield came up short, however, as Warwick won 92-58

“Team-wise we didn’t come out on top, but individually many rose to the occasion, earning points for the team,” Rogers said.

Iyrie Yoder’s 84-6 and Amanda Shearer’s 82-7 were first and second in the girls’ javelin event. Another freshman, Jordyn Gehres, won the triple jump while Sydney Rhoads claimed the high jump.

Audra Koerner-Smith was second in the pole vault.

In the girls’ distance runs, Ella Wolfe claimed another first in the 3,200. Jazahlyn Lopez placed second in the 1,600 in addition to finishing second behind Wolfe in the 3,200.

Sam Freedman finished first in the 3,200 while Aiden Hodge won the mile. Both of their times were L-L League Meet qualifiers.

Freedman and Hodge joined Frank Christoffel and Joe Fahrney for a victory in the 4x800 relay. Eddie Asadu joined Martin, Gabe Benjamin and 200 winner Xavier Peralta for a 4x100 first-place finish.

Benjamin, Freedman, Spencer Ashba and 400 winner Carson Lieberman teamed up for a top spot in the 4x400 relay.

Pete Wenzel won the javelin at 157 feet, Asadu won the long jump and Andy Garcia claimed the triple jump.
