Pastor celebrates retirement after decades of service

On June 4, Rick Rimert officially closed the chapter on years of ministry. Rimert served as a pastor for multiple congregations in the Penn Manor area for 35 years and has returned to East Petersburg, where he grew up, to spend his time in retirement.

A celebration to honor Rimert and his wife, Diane, was held on June 4 at Conestoga United Methodist Church (UMC), where he led the congregation for 13 years. Prior to serving the community at Conestoga UMC, Rimert was the pastor at Calvary UMC in Mohnton for five years. Since graduating from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1990, Rimert has also served the congregations of Colemanville UMC, Safe Harbor UMC and Berwyn UMC.

“It was a privilege and a joy to serve for all of those years,” Rimert said. “I met some great

Bowling program offered at Leisure Lanes

On June 6, Lee Keller kicked off the annual bowling program at Leisure Lanes Bowling and Golf Center, 3440 Columbia Ave. Meetings are held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will continue until the end of the 11-week program on Aug. 22., with the exception of July 4. The program is open to people 18 years old or younger, who may register for a small fee at any point through its duration.

During each meeting, participants bowl three games. The first game is primarily instructional; students learn about various techniques to See Bowling program pg 4

people and found great opportunities that I never would have had otherwise.”

When he was young, Rimert was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Petersburg. He graduated from Hempfield High School in 1971 and attended Elizabethtown College, graduating in 1975. Rimert was working as a manager at McDonald’s at the age of 34 when he felt called to become more involved in the ministry. He continued to work as a restaurant manager during his first year of seminary. “I had been feeling a nudge from God to serve in a more complete way,” Rimert said. “I had been active in church throughout my life, but I felt called to join the seminary.”

After becoming ordained, Rimert was selected by the church to serve in Penn Manor, and he moved out of East Petersburg with Diane and their two young sons. The family rented out their home in East

Petersburg and lived in parsonages during Rimert’s career as a pastor, and his two sons graduated from Penn Manor High School.

Although Penn Manor was one of the geographically closest communities that Rimert could have been selected for, he hadn’t spent much time in the area and was unfamiliar with it. “People were so kind and welcoming. It was a really good experience,” Rimert said. “I made so many connections there and continue to keep in touch with people.”

Now that he has entered retirement, Rimert looks forward to just being able to be a worshipper instead of leading a congregation. He also looks forward to reconnecting with the community he was raised in. Although East Petersburg may not be the exact same place where he spent his youth, it’s still his hometown; as a boy, he delivered newspapers to the home where he will spend his retirement years.

Eagle Scouts complete community projects

At the end of April, Scouts BSA Troop 30, based at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church on Columbia Avenue, Lancaster, held a ceremony to honor two of its members who recently completed their projects to achieve the rank of Eagle. Recent Penn Manor graduate Stephan Gebhard and Penn Manor student JJ Anderson each finished a project to better the community in some way.

For Anderson’s project, he created a storage space for The Common Wheel, a nonprofit bike shop located

on East King Street in Lancaster. Anderson and his father have been patrons of the shop for several years and are both BMX bike enthusiasts. “We knew the owner personally, and I wanted to give back to him and the organization,” Anderson said. Anderson noticed that the building was running out of space to store bikes, so he got to work outfitting the basement with storage amenities. The main goal of the project was to create a wooden deck platform in the basement that could fit multiple bikes on each shelf. Due to the limited space in the basement and narrow

“This is open to alumni of the league, and it’s basically an old-timer’s game,” Givler said. “It’s an opportunity for players who no longer play to relive their glory days.” The first all-star game will be held at 3:30 p.m., followed by the 5 p.m. home run derby for church league players. The second all-star game will begin at 6:30 p.m. “Each team is picking three all-stars from their team for the games,” Givler explained.

Along with the games, a

There are currently 17 teams in the league, from churches in towns throughout the county, including Manheim, Elizabethtown, East Petersburg and Bird-inHand. Although the league is celebrating its 50th anniversary of slow-pitch, it actually began 70 years ago as a fastpitch league, Givler said, adding, “I believe we are one of the longest continually running softball leagues in the state.”

Over the years, the league has produced a few famous alumni, including Chris Heisey, who played Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals from 2010 to 2017.

Givler, who typically plays an infield position, also serves as a league umpire and has been a member of the league since

1985. “I like to compete, but I also like the fellowship and camaraderie of the players and churches,” he said. He also credits the league’s longevity to the support of a group of volunteers. “This league doesn’t happen year after year without lots of people helping,” he stated. “From making schedules, to the umpires, to having the teams ready to go night after night, there are just so many great people in this league.”

All-Star Saturday is an opportunity to not only focus

on the league and its history, but also honor the game and give back to the community, Givler said. “It’s going to be a great community event, with good food and fun,” he stated. “You’re going to see some really talented softball players, and you’ll be able to see some players from yesteryear try to shake off the rust and come out and play.”

Businesses awarded KIZ tax credits

The Lancaster City Alliance recently recognized four city businesses that have been awarded more than $220,000 in 2022 Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) tax credits. The program is in place to encourage innovation and cultivate entrepreneurs in key industry sectors, including high technology, life sciences, business services and advanced materials/diversified manufacturing.

Lancaster City Alliance is the state-designated coordinating agency for the KIZ tax credit program in Lancaster.

This year’s awardees are Creative Coding Group Inc., $22,975; Pipedream Marketing Inc., $77,546.00; Triode Media Group, LTD, $21,307; and VIZpin Inc., $100,000, which is the award maximum.

The KIZ Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community &

three years. O’Keefe is also the head coach of the bowling team at McKendree University, and Keller has incorporated lessons he learned from her into his program.

Keller also has his own wealth of experience to draw from; he ran the junior bowling program at the former Columbia Bowling Alley for 15 years. Keller first became involved with coaching when his two sons joined the program, and he remained a coach after they left it. The Keller family is rife with bowlers, many of whom played on

Hempfield High School’s team. Although Keller no longer bowls, he and his wife regularly go to Leisure Lanes for the high school’s home games. “I don’t bowl anymore, but I get my enjoyment from seeing the kids leave the alley with smiles on their faces,” Keller said. “I started working with some of the players on the team in the last year or two. Once they reach the limits of what I can teach them, I recommend a more advanced instructor.”

Sierra Club awards grants

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, as part of its Earth Day activities on April 22, awarded Green Project Grants to 13 more Lancaster County organizations. Each of the organizations submitted proposals revealing a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure.

Those receiving the 2023 grants, along with their projects, include Bright Side Opportunities Center for the installation of a raised organic garden bed and two rain barrels; Church of the Apostles, Lancaster, supplies for its children’s Science in the Park Program; Conservation Foundation of Lancaster County for materials and supplies for a professional

development mini-course for Lancaster County teachers that concentrates on nature sketching; Gardens Gone Native Garden Club to beautify a quarter acre triangle of lawn in Lancaster Township; Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center to support appropriate manure management on its property through the end of 2023; Hempfield Family Child Development Center for a raised bed for use by children in attendance; and Historic Poole Forge to improve its wetland in the center of the pollinator area and adjacent rain garden with additional native trees and plants.

Grants were also awarded to Homefields for a new public event on Sunday, July 9, as part of the official NABA July Butterfly Count; Landis

access points, Anderson and his team needed to slide the wooden boards through a small window on the side of the building.

Per the criteria of an Eagle Scout project, Anderson had to lead his team of volunteers through the tasks of completing the project. This requirement provided an opportunity for him to learn about leadership and overcome the challenge of not being able to work in a completely handson manner. “It was really beneficial for me in that way and working with others,” Anderson said. “It was hard not to do it my way, but it felt good to give back.”

For Gebhard’s project, he built five feral cat shelters for the Humane League of Lancaster County. Leading a team of friends, fellow Scouts and parents, Gebhard created the shelters using pressure-treated wood and screws, and each one was equipped with a door on the top. The Humane League places the shelters in specific areas with a high population of stray cats so the cats can have protection from the elements.

While completing his project, Gebhard learned how to adjust his plans and adapt to the challenges presented by his project. Initially, he wanted to create a dog park, but was unable to acquire permission from the borough. Gebhard saw the Humane League’s need for cat shelters

Woods Nature Preschool to purchase a table top incubator that will allow students enrolled in its expanded Life Sciences Unit to observe the incubation process of chicks; Lititz Area Mennonite School to create an outdoor learning space for its students that includes the removal of invasive species and the establishment of new ground cover; Mary Gattis LLC (on behalf of a committee of concerned women who care about the benefits of native trees) to place new educational tree signs on 20 native trees currently growing in Lititz Springs Park; Millersville International House to transform the flower bed in front of its main residential building into an area of native plants; and St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lititz,

for improving and developing new programming for its “Sacred Grounds” project, which has converted several sections of its campus into a native forest and meadow that fosters biodiversity and storm water infiltration.

Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet are eligible to apply for a grant of $500 or less. “I’m very passionate about animals, so I was still able to incorporate that into my project,” Gebhard said. “I learned a lot about leading people and communicating.”
