Together Again: Aaron’s Acres Campers Ready To Get Back In The Saddle Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, is “beyond excited” to be taking Aaron’s Acres campers back to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) this summer, and staff at GMTRC are happy to be welcoming groups back to the barn at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. GMTRC works to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities. Paskoff was quick to point out several of the benefits the horseback riding experience offers to campers, including increased selfesteem and confidence, improved flexibility, improved balance and strength, improved coordination, and the sense of independence, even with support staff walking along next to the camper.

traditional employment have engaged at Homefields, where they grow organically minded produce for community shareholders. The farm is currently home to six adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “What I love most about working here is the people,” stated farm manager Katie Landis. “Everyone is happy to be here.”

Shareholders can gather their own produce in the “pick your own” field.

Homefields’ season runs for 24 weeks, from the last week of May to the beginning of November. People can purchase shares of the harvest, which can be customized depending on the individual’s needs. Payment plans are also available. Throughout the season, Homefields also hosts events, such as its Talks in the Field program, annual Classic Golf Tournament, and Picnic in the Fields. The Talks in the Field program connects local experts to the community on a wide range of environmental and wellness topics, including landscape design, storm water management, foraging, yoga, and native plant gardening. Homefields’ 25th annual Classic Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crosslands Pass, Millersville. Readers can find more information about this event at www.homefields.org/golf. The annual Picnic in the Fields event will occur on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the farm. “This organization is a beating heart for people who cannot stand

alone and need other opportunities in life and in work,” stated Allison G. Hawthorne, vice president of the board of directors. “That’s what motivated us to brand ourselves as a care farm and what motivates me to provide opportunities where opportunities don’t exist. I’m here to give a hand.” Homefields is interested in connecting with certified B corporations to launch its Fund a Farmer project. Fund a Farmer sponsors part-time farm hands with job coaching and other support needs. Fund a Farmer sponsorships will last from March to December and can be shared, partial, paid in one payment, biannually, quarterly, or monthly. Those interested in learning more about Fund a Farmer can contact info@homefields.org or call 717-872-2012. “People can just be who they are here,” said Hawthorne. “There is no judgment.” For more information, visit www.homefields.org/farm or search for “homefields_csa” on Instagram, “Homefields” on YouTube, or “Homefields Incorporated” on Facebook.

Faith, fun and fellowship will take center stage when Cavod Academy hosts a theater camp at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Campers will perform “ S i n g i n ’ i n t h e R a i n J r .” and will spend two weeks learning all about live theater while making friends, said Connie Dienner, executive director. “The camp is a chance for the campers to learn how to work together to create a show from start to finish,” she noted. “They really bond during camp. It’s a great time for friendship and relationship building.”

The camp is open to youths ages 10 to 18 and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 12. On Friday, Aug. 13, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the camp, the campers will put on a full production, complete with costumes, lighting and music; performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15. Cavod is a faith-based program, and in addition to rehearsal, the camp will feature devotional time and time for sharing. Master classes will be taught by theater professionals as well. “It’s really impressive what

the kids can pull off in two weeks,” said Julie Haney, artistic director of Cavod’s new Manheim location, which will open later this summer. “The camp gives them a chance to really develop their theater skills.” This is the 10th year Cavod has offered a summer theater camp. It’s a natural extension of the New Holland-based nonprofit’s mission, Dienner said. “Our slogan is, ‘Create With Purpose,’” she stated. “The strength of Cavod is believing in the abilities of all people and pulling out their God-given talent.”

Dienner stressed that the camp is open to anyone, regardless of theater background. “You don’t need any experience,” she said. “Everyone is very supportive, and our team is very friendly. If anyone is shy going into camp, it’s amazing to see how the kids come out of their shell during camp. The parents will be amazed when they see the show.” A discounted camp rate will be offered through Thursday, July 1. For more information on the camp, visit https://cavod.org or call 717-354-3355.

Paskoff added that the GMTRC staff are patient and kind as they help support each child with the goal of a safe, positive experience. GMTRC program director Stephanie Fleck will be working with Aaron’s Acres campers for the first time this summer, and she is looking forward to the experience. “We are thrilled to have the campers back on the property,” she said. “We look forward to witnessing the physical and emotional interactions the campers will have when they encounter a horse.” Readers who would like to learn about Aaron’s Acres may visit www.aaronsacres.org. Now that the campers can visit the stable in person, they will be able to enjoy riding, grooming, and leading the horses, along with learning about the barn operations and helping keep the stable clean. Youth, Pre-College Art Classes Planned The Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host youth and pre-college classes this summer. Over three weeks in July, beginning on Monday, July 12, the CCE will host dozens of weeklong, in-person youth art classes. Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes, choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. This year, classes will return to an in-person format. Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft. To better help parents balance work with their children’s time in camp, CCE has partnered with co-working space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly

rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end. The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6. Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking. For a complete week-byweek schedule or to register, visit www.pcad.edu/cce.

Troutman made the gamewinning goal in each game, finding herself on top of the national leaderboard for all of Division III. This is the second time Troutman has been selected to the All-State Team, having been selected to the Second Team after the 2019 season.
