On Maguire Younes’ first day of school as a freshman at Hempfield High School (HHS) in 2019, his teachers issued him a warning that the next four years were going to fly by. As Younes prepared to read his speech during HHS’ commencement ceremony on May 24, all he could think was, “They were right.” The speech was titled “2,340

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDTrinity United Church of Christ (UCC), 2340 State St., East Petersburg, will host its annual Friendship Fest on Sunday, July 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. The free event will feature several food trucks, live entertainment, activities for children and safety demonstrations.
Meals and desserts will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Stoney’s Burgers and Fries, Tri-County BBQ, TJ’s Ice Cream and Dutch Country Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels.
Days,” in reference to the time Younes had attended school from kindergarten to 12th grade.
For Younes and many of his classmates, graduation day was accompanied by a mixture of emotions. The nervousness of preparing to give his speech, the excitement to finally have four years of hard work pay
off and the melancholy of saying goodbye culminated in a day that closed one chapter of life, beginning the next for the Class of 2023.
During his time as a student at HHS, Younes said, he had experiences that helped him to feel supported by the school and connected with his classmates. “Whether it was
teachers making connections and putting in effort to help students, state-of-the-art classes like (Communications Technology) or new English classes that are relevant to the 20th century, my favorite memories came from the supportive environment at Hempfield,” Younes said.
Younes frequently participated in Student Council events such as organizing food drives and raising funds for students in need. He was
Local music group Auscultation Brass will perform at Trinity UCC from 5 to 6 p.m. The concert is free to attend, but the group will accept donations. The live entertainment will also include routines from magician Eric Vera, and a bounce house will be available to children.
The East Petersburg Fire Company will be in attendance at Friendship Fest, and Peace of Mind Protection Company will offer fire safety demonstrations and educate kids on methods of escaping a house fire.
The tradition of hosting an annual Friendship Fest at Trinity UCC began almost 20 years ago, although the church stopped organizing the event as of 2012. See

Art exhibit featured
Renowned artist Susan Darwin is displaying her Lancaster County exhibit, featuring a collection of 20 original oil paintings capturing the essence and beauty of Lancaster County, at the Lancaster City Welcome Center, 38 Penn Square.
Friendship Fest
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by
The exhibition, which opened on June 2 and will run through Saturday, Aug. 26, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the artwork inspired by the diverse landscapes and rich heritage of Lancaster County. The artist reception took place during First Friday on June 2, providing art enthusiasts with a chance to meet the artist and engage in insightful conversations.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and history of Lancaster County through Darwin’s artistic interpretations. From picturesque farmland to famous residents, folk art and even the Amish community, the artist’s body of work encom-
passes a wide range of subjects. A comprehensive informational catalog accompanies the exhibit, featuring laminated pages that provide in-depth insights into the paintings. Each artwork’s historical significance, the artist’s inspiration and personal reflections are shared, fostering a deeper connection between the viewer and the artwork.
In addition to the original oil paintings, visitors will have the opportunity to purchase signed limitededition giclée prints, art cards and the exhibit catalog. The closing reception will be held on Aug. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.
The Lancaster County Exhibit is open to the public, and admission is free. Operating hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on First Fridays. For more information about the artist, visit www.susandarwin.com.
When the current pastor of Trinity UCC, Chris Rankin, arrived shortly after, he suggested reviving the tradition. The church began to organize Friendship Fest again in 2014, and it was held on the third Sunday in July to coincide with National Ice Cream Day. The church served free ice cream and hot dogs to the community, and the festivities incorporated familyfriendly entertainment and
a collection of canned goods for local food banks.
After taking another hiatus from hosting Friendship Fest due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the church encountered issues finding enough volunteers to continue operating it. Rankin decided to change the event to revolve around food trucks, lessening the demand for people to work the stands. Rankin also wanted to utilize the event to generate support for Trinity UMC’s preschool, which was still facing challenges related to the pandemic. The funds raised from Friendship Fest will directly assist the preschool with its operating expenses and will also play a role in keeping the cost of tuition from rising.
Since returning in 2021, Friendship Fest continued to expand and added new attractions, such as face painting, the concert and the magic show. The community has showed its support for the return of the Friendship Fest by ensuring that each year’s event has been well attended. “It’s a way for us to connect with our neighbors and share with them about our preschool and church,” Rankin said. “It’s also a great way for the preschool families to get together over the summer while school is out.”

elected to be the club’s president during his senior year, representing the student body at school board meetings and discerning the needs of the school as a whole. Younes was also a part of the Comm Tech program, which provided him opportunities that included flying to Long Beach, Calif., for a media competition. When the COVID-19 pandemic restricted admission for live events, Younes often assisted the athletics department by livestreaming
games and serving as the announcer for the girls’ softball team.
Although Younes’ time in high school is rife with fond memories, the last four years presented him with a variety of challenges to overcome. For all the members of the Class of 2023, the COVID-19 pandemic created unexpected obstacles. Younes and his classmates had barely begun their second semester of high school when the building was closed due to safety measures
in March of 2020. “Together as a class and school, we went through dropping everything we learned, having no available resources and leaving everything in our lockers,” Younes said. “Overall, it was a mess. But we worked through it, and we persevered onward to return to normalcy.”
As Younes looked ahead to life after graduation, he credited HHS’ variety of class offerings with preparing him for college. The school offers Advanced Placement courses,

Art studio to present exhibitions
Mulberry Art Studios has announced that two exhibitions will be featured this summer, highlighting the work of the late artists Don Shenk and Lewis Lanza Rudolph.
A retrospective of Shenk’s work will be on display throughout the month of July. The exhibit will feature photographs printed on various materials, encompassing a wide variety of subject matter. The public is invited to a First Friday opening reception on July 7 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Shenk spent more than five decades as a photographer capturing images of Lancaster County, the place where he was born and raised, and spent his lifetime. He is known for scenes of farms, landscapes and Plain people.
He also used his skills as a photographer not only to cre-
ate art, but as a volunteer firefighter at New Danville Fire Company, where he photographed fire calls, and at his home church, Central Manor Church, where he documented services and events.
Shenk was a founding member of the Lancaster Camera Club and served as its president two times. In 2016, Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography (WIEP) made Shenk a Senior Fellow. This honor is awarded only to participants of this juried international show who have had more than 100 photo entries accepted into the competition.
Shenk’s work has been featured in countless magazines and newspapers, and he published three books showcasing his photographs. His work also appeared over the years in calendars, on postcards and on greeting cards. Shenk
passed away in December of 2021.
Mulberry Art Studios will also showcase more of the work of Rudolph, one of its signature artists. Rudolph was such a prolific artist in his day that even though Mulberry has now held three exhibitions of his work over the past few years, the new exhibit’s pieces will all be new to the public. The exhibit will have opening receptions on First Fridays, July 7 and Aug. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Rudolph began painting in 1966 and continued into the late 1990s, mostly painting in obscurity. He lived his entire life in his childhood home in Red Bank, N.J., and spent his free time alone, walking the
boardwalks of Asbury Park to Belmar, N.J., and painting in his basement. He died in 2012 during valve replacement surgery.
Rudolph’s work is predominately abstract, created in oils on Masonite with occasional added paper and wax layering. He was favorably critiqued by the New York Times during the time he spent showing his work in New York City and northern New Jersey galleries.
Mulberry Art Studios is located in downtown Lancaster at 21 N. Mulberry St. Free parking is offered in a private lot. For more information about the exhibits, visit www.facebook.com/mulberry artstudios.

Falcons banded in educational event
In collaboration with the biologists from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, all three of Harrisburg’s young peregrine falcons (eyasses) were fitted with identification bands.
Banding provides biologists the ability to identify a specific, individual bird. It also can provide information on where the bird was banded, how old it was at banding, and its sex. Each young falcon was banded,
weighed, and given a physical exam. All three had clear eyes and a clear throat, indicating they are free of trichomoniasis.
There are two males and one female. The males were banded 04/BZ and 23/CA, and the female was banded 05/BZ.

Pest management seminar planned
Penn State Extension will offer its Turf and Ornamentals School on Wednesday, July 12, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Masonic Village’s Patton Campus, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. The program will provide information on turf and ornamental pest identification and management as well as pesticide applicator safety. It is for landscape professionals, turf-
grass professionals, school and park employees, and arborists.
There is a fee, and credits will be offered. The program will take place rain or shine, so attendees should dress according to the weather forecast.
Space is limited. To register by Thursday, July 6, visit http://extension.psu.edu and search for “Turf and Ornamentals School.”
As a way to connect with the community and those in need, members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Landisville, recently collected stuffed animals for the Penn State Health Children’s Lancaster Pediatric Center on Harrisburg Pike.
Judy Traup, a member of the Care Team at Zion, explained that the church wanted to provide comfort to children in the hospital when they might otherwise be feeling discouraged or scared.
More than 200 animals were
blessed by pastor Timothy Seitz-Brown in worship before being delivered to the clinic by some of the members of the church.
The animals were well received by Dr. Esther Forrester, director of pediatrics,
Students of the Quarter honored
and employees at the clinic. They stated how important these gifts are to children as they face health issues.
All of this was made possible by donations from the congregation and a grant from Thrivent Financial.
